100 Mile Nokian Tires Outpost nAT Tire Efficiency Test on Rivian R1T

- I recently purchased new Nokian Tyres Outpost nAT tires and tested them. Here's my setup:
- Conserve Mode
- Standard height (turned Auto suspension off)
- Moderate ride feel
- Set the AC to 68º and the lowest fan speed
- Highway Assist set to 71 mph (70 mph GPS)
I then drove 100 miles (about 50 miles in a loop). On the first leg, I had a strong headwind but on the way back that became a tailwind to counter. Here are the results for those who are tl;dw -
Total Distance: 100.8 miles
Average Speed: 68 mph
Duration: 1 hr 29 min
Efficiency: 1.94 mi/kWh
Total Energy: 51.9 kWh
Based on some searching, Rivian states that the 20" All-terrain standard tires will use about 48 kWh to go 100 miles.
What do you think, would you buy these Nokian tires?

As a reminder, I purchased these tires at full price and paid to install them. Nokian Tyres did not pay, sponsor, or ask for this video.

Thanks for doing this - super helpful. I have some Les Schwab tires and have been disappointed with the efficiency and am seriously looking at these nAT I am going to first try to increase my tire pressure (after checking the sidewall and spec of course) if it gets my efficiency up then I'll be happier. My next tires will be these or the Michelin Platinum tires. Plus got you on the other social platforms thanks for your content!!
Great review! Not bad efficiency for a tire that’s got a lot beefier tread than the stock ATs. Probably worth it just for a bit longer tire life (it has a longer tread warranty). I also like that the nATs have a smooth sidewall. The original outpost had a ribbed sidewall which I never cared for. Kyle is who sold me on Nokian, and they definitely lived up to his hype. Mine did really well off-road on a Tacoma and drove way better than the stock road tires around town. I was also shocked how quiet they were. After about 10k miles they’re a bit noisier, but still very quiet for an AT.
Very true!
Nice review brother.
Much appreciated
NOTE: I've had these tires for ~2200 miles and they're getting more efficient with time (it's like the first 500 miles or so were needed to knock the 'rough edges' off). That said, to note, I'm running 275/60 R20s on aftermarket wheels, so I can swap 1:1 with my OEM 21s. I'm only running ~45 psi, but this size is only rated for 51 psi max.
Good to know!
Nice threads on those tires. I’ve put them on my list.
Thank you!
Nice review.
I’m seeing similar efficiency in conserve. Lower in the Midwest cold and all-purpose.
Aside from not feeling as sticky in aggressive speed turns the A/T grip is better on loose terrain. 4,000 miles in currently.
Oh nice I’m happy to see someone else with these!
What's your impression of the Outposts in highway driving? Do they track well and corner reasonably? How about noise level? And are you running them on an R1T? Thanks.
I switched the OEM tires for the General Grabber HTS .....and they turned out to be even more efficient than the Pirellis.
I'm averaging 2.5 at 70mph....versus 2.3 with the Pirellis on the same road at the same temperature
Oh that’s sweet
Any other things to note about that tire? I’m thinking of swapping for something more efficient than the stock AT.
Sounds like you are running an off size on those if your efficiency is that good (i.e. it wouldn't be that good if you adjusted for size)? i.e. 275/60s on the R20 wheels?
I’m running stock 275/65R20
Now that it's been a couple more weeks, any new findings? Just ordered through Discount Tire and am hoping it's the right call.
That’s the problem with going to LT’s. You have to run higher psi in order to keep the load rating up compared to a P-metric, meaning the ride will be stiffer. I prefer XL’s on a vehicle like this.
Thread? Did you mean tread?
Accent sorry
Hopefully they’ll consider making something for the 21s.
I’ve asked a few tire manufacturers the problem is Rivian is the only one who makes a wheel this size so there’s no incentive
Hi Jose, another great review! Now that you’ve had them for over a month, any regrets? Also, there’s a lot of info regarding snow performance, but I haven’t been able to find information regarding the nAT’s performance on wet roads - which of course matters more in FL. Are they grippy or slippy in the rain on blacktop?
No regrets at all! It’s done amazing on rain here in Florida with good grip and no slip.
Ty for doing this. Gonna stay with Pirelli then. Do quite a bit of long drives where range is needed
If you go with a more all season like the Nokian One HT, you’ll get better efficiency
@@riviantrackr true, but I need the AT tires where I am
@azorglub Makes sense!
Oh man Jose! I’ve got 7,000 miles on my nATs running at 49 psi and getting horrible efficiency… I have been averaging @ 1.65 m/kw doing most of my miles @ 75 mph highway driving.
What I will tell you is this tire (tyre) is AMAZING in the snow/ice of Upstate NY.
60 psi here I come!!!
Same here. I’ve bumped it to 60psi and it helps. Still hard to get 2miles/kWh on highway. Around town driving is above 2.
@kEVsterTech I’m running 55PSI and getting 2.24 mi/kWh over 6500 miles thus far.
@@riviantrackr that nice Florida weather helps ya out. Little jealous ☀️ I’ve been mostly highway and had winter weather mixed in. 1.9m/kWh so far with 7000miles.
Also wonder if your aftermarket wheels help with less weight or aero.
It's tread,not thread!
How to perches theses tires. I looked their website bit confusing. Can we get them in Firestone or Costco 😊
Discount tire.
60 PSI ?? Even over 51 is high. Are you SURE about that ?
On a E rated tire, you have to run at a higher pressure. If you run freeway speeds at lower pressure the tires will run hotter and will be less efficient
What’s your take on rivians layoffs and stock market price? I have a reservation on the R1T but this makes me nervous.
I was a Tesla owner and a Range Rover Owner. I now own a R1S. If you understand what it is to drive an electric vehicle then you will LOVE your truck. It is an incredibly well made vehicle for how new the company is. If you are not familiar with owning an electric vehicle then it might be a little shocking to make the change prior to the Tesla network being opened. The non home charging options for Rivian (ex: Electrify America, EVgo, and Charge Point) just don’t have enough locations and reliability but this can change quickly. Long story but I would for sure tell you to continue with the purchase it is an incredible truck and I have not been disappointed.
@@jeffdash80 I’ve test driven the R1T and it’s amazing. No complaints about the vehicle itself but I’m just worried about the company if they will survive and not go bankrupt.
These Rivian Trucks weigh 7,000lbs! Don't get your Wives angry guys, she'll crush you properly!
Hmmm?
