I do like your videos. Definitely make me think! Just about to start a new marine LPS aquarium after 10 years in the hobby, 4 tanks, mixed results. I'm definitely sat in the middle slump on the chart, and have been watching a whole load of videos from beginner to expert on YT to try and nail this next one!!

The best aquarist I worked with professionally was Gavin at Neil Hardy. And he openly had other aquarist he learnt from and admired. As an ex so called professional aquarist I would give myself a 5 on a bad day and a 7 peaking

In the video you mentioned something about cycling differently and stuff like that. In my tank i can keep different stuff to my dad, like shrimp and soft corals. But in his tank he can keep sps and i cant, i tried them, my water quality is almost perfect. I think it is due to lighting, i have one of the best lights but its turned down due to the huge electric bill we have. Good video :). Also you mentioned something about people commenting on things they havent kept, such as an achilles tang. We keep one. But numb skulls who havent kept one decide to talk rubbish about them, same with copperbands and generally difficult fish to kept, so much misinformation. In my book, you should listen to someone who has kept that fish successfully for a long period of time. That even classes for clownfish too, sometimes they can be little swines too.

Ok ok ok. I'm a 10/10 in looks🤣 but in reefing, well..... I truly believe I'm a 4 where I cracked the entry level 1.5 year. I know what I'm doing but for ever learning and tweaking. Like I said I know what I'm doing till it is all going bad. Those that think there expert's will truly tell you there's so much more to learn.

Great video. My first thought was that I rated me as 7 but since you’re 7 I can’t be more than 5 😀. I started with a 20 gallon 12 years ago and now have had a 90 gallon for 2 years. Sad to admit that my 20 gallon seemingly looked more successful even at a time where I had very little knowledge compared to now. I’ll keep trying at least.

Honestly, probably a 5. I am good with my tank and its particular system and consumption, but I honestly don't know if you could give me a different system and I would have success. Some corals like brain or meaty corals just hate me. I kill GSP and xenia, but grow clams and sps fine. I am not in a financial place to experiment endlessly, either. But I know what I am good at and I know my comfort zone, so I just stay in my lane for now. It does cast doubt on my ability to help and coach other people, though, because their systems are not my system.

I hate the learning curve of being a reefer. Everyone has killed corals. I been reefing for about seven years and I still think I'm a novice, well, maybe slightly higher than a novice. I still can't grow gsp. I try to learn and challenge myself, but sometimes I just don't have the right environment for certain corals and I'm ok with that

Ive gotta take issue with the Marine Biology Degree Aquarist, some of the most successful reef tanks are privately owned by aquarists that have learnt not through schools but through experience and discussion with other aquarists. ( Like your self)
Nearly every public Aquarium reef tank ( maintained by Marine biologists) that I've seen, is very average looking with drab corals, bleached corals, over abundance of pest corals and more often than not aptaisia and diatoms. There are tanks on UA-cam, run by amateur aquarists, that are way better looking and thriving.
As for myself, i dont think i can ascribe a number - I've spawned some marine fish (7) but I've never kept clams (0) cephlapods (0) or tangs (0) eels (0) parrot fish (0) large angels (0) triggerfish (0) fairy wrasse (0) hawkfish (0)
I'm good with certain sps and failed with other sps species ( 3). Ive been very successful with some of my favourite fish species - blennies, gobies, dragonets, anglerfish (6.7) but not with others - pipefish, seahorse, butterfly fish, filefish.(2). I've never had a tank crash from unknown causes but i have because of slack maintenance.
I've never fragged a SPS (0) but i have successfully raised marine comet fry (7), damsel fish fry (8). Macro algae (5)
I think when it comes to successful reef tanks 90% of us are 4-5 in general but have higher scores with the particular.

I get what you're saying but you haven't been to stunning public aquariums. There are some with displays that are amazing. And freshwater, and brackish, and Northern/Southern Hemisphere. This is where being a marine biologist is desirable. Maintaining all of these environments and knowing enough to manage them on a level where 5 million litres and ten times that in $ has been spent. I've got a really nice tank in my lounge isn't enough knowledge.
