  • Following the occupation of the Channel Islands by the German Occupied Forces in 1940, bunkers and fortifications were constructed all around the coastline of Jersey.
    The people of Jersey who chose to remain on the island lived under the German occupation for 5 years from 1940 to 1945 during WW2. Locals were given the opportunity to help build the Underground Hospital now known as the Jersey War Tunnels. These locals were treated well and paid a good salary. The Slaves who came from places like Russia and Spain and who built many of the fortifications around the island were forced to work beyond human endurance and treated cruelly by those in charge.
    Today the Jersey Occupation Society aims to preserve these structures from the past and they open bunkers to the public on set days.

    Excellent Video, Thanks CIOS for preserving. First time I went to Jersey on holiday was in July 1960, I was 12 years old and visiting the underground hospital was quite daunting. I remember it was a very scary place (OK I was only 12!). I last visited in the early 90s and it had changed a massive ammount with many more of the tunnels opened and painted. This video has wet my appetite so maybe another trip this year to co-inside with some of the open days at the other bunkers. Again to CIOS, well done for all the work you are doing.

      It's definitely an eerie feeling down those tunnels, you can almost smell and hear the history, glad you liked the island! 🙂 🍻

    Chilling. No music. No commentary. Well done. Also chilling, D Day Through German Eyes (Book One & Two) by Holger Erkhertz. Hellstorm: The Death of Nazi Germany, 1944-1947 by Thomas Goodrich

    Very hard to dispute a "real Bunker with armaments intact and disabled. very difficult for anyone to say it all never happened! Thank you, for the preservation.

    Enjoyed very much,lack of commentary not a problem,must have been frightening living there witnessing what happened to the slave labourers and knowing that the Nazis were ruthless and brutal.

      It's better to leave commentary to knowledgable people like historians who know exactly what they are talking about. There is nothing worse than a visitor trying to add commentary for the sake of it..

    I went to jersey in 1975 on holiday I was 8 walked out on a concrete sea wall near St Helier about 30 feet above the rocks and sat there on the end in my swimming trunks and nearly slid off the end, I managed to save myself on the third attempt by laying flat and clawing at the slippery concrete, still makes shudder now

    the germans build all these bunkers on the channel island but they were never used in the war only to tranport the wounded man from france during the invasion on the beaches from normandie

    Can you tell me where the first bunker in the video is located, please?
    I was there last year and visited quite a few sites, but don't recall seeing this one. I'm guessing that is it is one of the ones that are open to the public on certain days?
    Great vid but maybe some titles for each opening scene would be good?
    Thanks for posting!

      I have been checking my camera's SD card and it seems i took a bright and clear photo of this very room. The 'head' looks as if it has been created by a few streaks of paint so it's an optical illusion after all.

    I apologize ahead of time, but where is Jersey? Brittian But a german bunker in brittian? Im confused! Must not know my geography/history.
    I like your videos! Here in the US and some overseas bunkers I’ve seen have been totally stripped out, including copper wiring

    • @elenwashere

      Jersey is a small British island that was invaded by Germany during WW2. The island's people had no way of protecting themselves and were forced to live under German occupation.

    you showed the air raid shelter at La Hougue Bie but you didn't show the German wooden barracks that the artifacts are show in. I believe the lack of commentary is due to you not knowing what you are filming.

    • @elenwashere
      @elenwashere  2 роки тому

      That's correct. You have to be certain of all the facts before adding any type of commentary. I'm a UA-camr who is knowledgeable of the basics but I will leave the facts and deeper research to the historians.

    The bunker is nice to look at, but with 20 minutes of nothing but the sound of footsteps is very boring. You need to add commentary to what you are showing. Otherwise not bad.

    • @elenwashere

      I'm just a person with a camera arriving at a historic site with just the basic facts. Believe me there is nothing worse listening to a person struggling to add commentary for the sake of adding commentary to any subject without knowing the full facts.

    Very nice that they or keeping history and not destroying it like here in the USA for a small Few! The bunkers look like they never fired a shot of got hit by anything

    • @KumaBean
      @KumaBean 5 років тому

      There was a whole lot of firing going on as they practiced, but none took any hits as the Germans surrendered without firing a shot.
      People are still finding unexploded munitions on the beaches to this day.

      You'd think so,
      It's said that while the older Germans knew war already and were well aware of the dangers of the Eastern Front, the younger guys were getting restless and wanted to see some action.
      I'm with the older guys, 🍻

      I heard a stiry from a old man, well he was when he told me. At 15 he was on the Russian Front and had pissed off his Seargent, or whtever the German equivalent is. An order came through 'Volunter for special mission. He got dumped. He said he cried, made out his will and prepared to die. Then got shipped to Jersey.
