      I'm sorry but Victor Borges was much funnier and especially Hungarian rhapsody far surpass dudley in musical comedy. So uh I see similar dilution here. Does that make you feel a little less superior? I really don't feel this way but I want to try out how being an arrogant prick looking down at everything current would feel. It feels silly. And intensely stupid. Like brexit.

      One has to be a master before you can fool around like that. Just like Tommy Cooper, or even Les Dawson. The overall result is not additive, it is a product of the two talents, musicianship genius and comic genius.

      Agreed. In many ways it is a love letter to Beethoven. I suspect Beethoven would immediately want to jump to the piano and try & one-up Dudley with something even more preposterous! "You thought that was a long coda? You ain't heard nothing yet!"

    I am aware of two versions on this on UA-cam - this version and an earlier, somewhat blurry, black and white version. In this performance Dudley Moore allowed himself to 'play the fool', while in the earlier version he performed it much more 'seriously' and allowed the comedy of the music to shine by it's own light.
    Personally I believe the earlier performance was the funnier, due to Moore just allowing it to work for itself.

    • @russelldawkins9094
      @russelldawkins9094 3 роки тому +2

      I agree completely. Neither the host nor the audience here is nearly as discerning, either, and that may be why he made it a broader comic performance. He 'read the crowd'.
      The other version, for the curious, is here: ua-cam.com/video/GazlqD4mLvw/v-deo.html

    • @warpigeonofdoom

      The black and white performance is a clip taken from ‘Beyond the Fringe’ recording. The serious performance adds to the satire. Unfortunately the available free uploads are not on the best definition.

      I don't get what you mean by 'NO TV audience now would get this'? I think they would! I would! It appears to me it is the TV Executives that have decided we won't get it and therefore are not taking the risk to show it. But - for example, Bill Bailey stills packs West End theatres et al often with musical comedy of a not dissimilar ilk to Dudley - there is definitely a big audience for this type of comedy being done well.

    Dud is playing it entirely for laughs here. Just watch the original from "Beyond the Fringe". In the original he was also playing it for laughs, but the audience was more sophisticated then, his technique was sharper and the parody was clearer, the piece flowed better and the ending - well that was just classic Beethoven.
