Buy 2 door hinges and make a swinging door so you don’t have to be constantly driving screws into your tortoise house! Screwing in and unscrewing screws constantly will splinter the wood lol. I’m a perfectionist. I’m just telling you what I’d do.

Kenan, if that's roofing material, then its coated in tar, which could be harmful to the tortoises, especially if for whatever reason they find it to smell like food, you know what they're like, they will eat whatever smells like food, hopefully not, but I wanted to say something just incase as I love the Torts the same as you do. The Tort Cabin looks great!!!!!!

Alternatively, using painters tape and pressing it against the screw hole locations will indent it into the tape. Then you can simply press it to where you want it and it makes it easy to put a level against and get perfectly level (if you’re OCD like me)

"This roofing stuff, I don't know what it is..." I suspect it's Tile Seal from Boral ;) I think my concern using tar paper would be when it's warmer, acting like fly paper and winding up with all kinds of bugs and birds and squirrels and tortoises stuck to it. But I'm overly paranoid about sticky things.

    • @davidhawkins847

I don't know about the product brand but that material looks like torch on roofing. Its roofing material usually in rolls that you use a torch to heat up the adhesive side to stick to the roof. It's more commonly used on flat roofs so you don't have nail holes.

Life hack tip : next time you build such a structure, as you stack the logs, put down aquarium silicon between the logs in a double bead, from one end to the other on the outside edge a inch from the outer edge of the log, and loop back an inch from the inner edge and go back down the log, then connect to the beginning of the bead. Then all you have to do after the structure is built is then foam between the logs and open spaces.

You need to stain the wood for longevity. Staining it will keep termites from chewing the wood and it’ll make it waterproof. The cool thing about staining is it’s kind of like hair dye. You can stain it any color so if you want to stain it pink you can or you can stain it light brown so it blends in with the surrounding area.

The easier way to mount anything is to use a piece of tape. Put the tape on the back of the item and trace the holes then put the tape on the wall and drill through the traces. This way you don't need a copy machine just some painters or masking tape (any tape that you can write on).

You always ensist that you aren't good at carpentry, but you always do a great job. You're not building mansions; you don't need to be a 5 star expert. You do exactly what you need to do and do it the right way.

You can build a door on the outside up top to throw in hay or check them.
