TP-Link ER605 Load Balancing Router - Failover / Backup Configuration For Dual WAN (ISP & Cellular)

  • In this video, I walk through all the administrative settings in my TP-Link ER605 Multi-WAN router which I'm using to manage high availability connectivity on my home network.
    I have both an ISP and cellular router running into the multi-WAN router as bridges and the router is handling all wireless and wired networking on my home network, serving an NAS, a media center, and a WiFi access point (among other devices).
    Setting up failover allows you to provision high availability connectivity on your network, eliminating or greatly mitigating the downtime you may be experiencing with your primary connectivity source.

I takes to much time for ther er605 to switch from wan to wan1 when the network is working weak so I want both wans to work at the same time and when the wan will stop working use the wan1 as a backup. A warm greeting bro, I hope you're all doing well. I need your help, please. I have this load balancer model, and my issue is that if I disconnect the primary WAN, I lose connection for about 1 minute before it switches to the second WAN port. Is there a way to avoid losing connection, meaning that if the primary connection is lost, the WAN 2 is automatically assigned? For example, to be in a video conference and have the connection remain stable despite disconnecting WAN 1 at that moment.

    @Daniel Rosehill If you untick Load Balancing, will that merge both WANS? So if you had 10Mbps coming in and your second WAN2 has 20Mbps, it would provide 30 Mbps?

    • @DanielSRosehill
      @DanielSRosehill  2 роки тому

      Hey! That's not really the intended use case for load balancing. You're thinking about connection bonding which requires packet management on the WAN side of the network too. In other words -- no, to the best of my knowledge, you can't aggregate bandwidth between multiple WANs using this setup (although you can optimize the resource of available WANs by routing them more intelligently between your local endpoints).

      @DanielSRosehill  2 роки тому +1

      Don't quote me on any of this (because I'm not TP Link). But yes.
      As far as I can remember, this is achieved by assigning static IPs to LAN devices in your DHCP manager. Then, bundling those LAN devices into LAN groups.
      After that, go into transmission -> routing and you'll be able to set routing rule policies. You can configure any of your groups to route via a specific WAN. I have the interface up in front of me right now but ... after much tinkering this is working and I don't want to break anything. Hopefully somebody else who's got this set up can confirm whether these instructions are accurate or not.

    • @DanielSRosehill
      @DanielSRosehill  2 роки тому +1

      So on my home network I'm running a TP-Link router in AP Link mode (which has dual band - one of the Archer series). I went for TP Link because that's what both the cellular router and load balancer are so I figured it might minimize interoperability issues. Check the specs but AFAIK most TP Link routers will support AP mode out of the box. If not, they also make a few APs that have dual band WiFI. And .... there are tons of APs by other companies that are dual band. It just might be a bit more legwork to configure everything properly to avoid DHCP conflicts, etc.

    • @DanielSRosehill

      As luck would have it, my DSL service got substantially better shortly after going to all this trouble (haha). I think they sent out a crew to do some local roadworks. Ergo, the days of daily internet outage seem to be over. However, looking at the RX/TX logs, I can see that the cellular backup does appear to be kicking in now and again. Running the math (this should be a feature actually!) it's in service about 2% of the time. I would therefore say that 'yes, it appears to be working'! (I wouldn't rate TP-Link support, however. I disregarded their instruction to enable load balancing and just configured the backup link. Also: for the same reason, if I hadn't already bought the hardware, I'd probably go with somebody like Mikrotik or Ubiquiti). Hope your installation goes well!

    Regarding the failover, at what interval does it check if you're online (via ping/dns lookup)? In other words, if my primary connection fails, will I experience say 10-30 seconds of downtime before it switches?... or will the "Load balancing" being active help me avoid that?

    • @DanielSRosehill

    Newbie here. Got tired of my Main ISP having biweekly service interruptions so I got a 2nd ISP. In my limited understanding, when the ER605 is set to just Load Balancing mode, it will add up both my ISPs as if I am connected to just 1 ISP right? My first ISP is a 500 Mbps Fiber connection and the 2nd one is another 500 Mbps one. So, will I get 1000 Mbps throughput in Load Balancing mode? Is my understanding correct? Whereas in Failsafe mode, only my 1st ISP will work and the throughput is 500 Mbps still then 2nd ISP will only be used by the router if ISP 1 is offline. Am I right?

    • @DanielSRosehill
      @DanielSRosehill  8 місяців тому +1

      You can't aggregate bandwidth in the manner that connection bonding does. However, you can use load balancing to use multiple WANs simultaneously (for that you'll need to set up some rules).
      Failover is simpler. As you wrote, it's an either/or rule that will shift connectivity between the WANs depending on a ping/uptime test.
      To be honest, either are great options. If one WAN is frequently down and the bandwidth of both ISPs is enough for the network than - purely for the sake of simplicity and ease of setup - I'd stick with simple failover.
      Hope that was at least of some help!

    First, fantastic video. Thanks so much. I am a newbie, so forgive me in advance, but I have a question. We have fiber Internet to our business. Once or twice a year the Fiber goes down. So I thought I would set up a failover to a cellular router. Seems simple enough. But when I got everything set up and tested the failover, our business LAN lost internet connection. Is it possible that that is because of the change in the IP address of the cellular modem when it "took over" supplying internet in the place of our fiber? That's all I can think of. Any suggestions?

    Do you have a clear understanding of the difference between the newer settings for "Backup Mode" of "Link Backup" or "Always Link Primary"? The configuration is 2 primary WAN links being load balanced with a single backup WAN that should be used if both primaries fail. The desired behavior is that it switches off of the one Backup WAN if either of the Primary WANs come back online.
    The contextual pop-up explanation is not clear at all.

      Sorry, no idea, but just checked the TL-ER5120 from my local vendor and it's listed as "end of life." Not sure exactly what this means in terms of support but .... something you may wish to consider (it has gigabit ports and the same number of ports as the ER605 but looks like a far less space-efficient piece of hardware). And yes, ER605 supports both IP-based and application-based load balancing. It's listed as supporting up to 130 devices in the spec sheet so you should be just within the limit.

    I’m finding that failover takes 30 seconds to complete. Are you noticing the same thing?

      Yup! I even have videos where I time it and got about that!
      What I've been told:
      -> The failover happens immediately on the network layer
      -> It takes a while for applications (e.g. a web browser) to notice the change of WAN and work with it
      Which makes sense to me. Most users aren't expected to have multiple WANs at their disposal so I guess the detection checks on apps aren't as good.
      For truly seamless failover, I found that connection bonding (with Speedify) beat the load balancer hands down. Failovers were truly seamless / essentially unnoticeable.

    Hola, excelente video. consulta: como se haría en un modelo con 2 o más wan... quiero que todo usuario que vaya a www.youtube.com (por ejemplo) salga por la wan1 y el resto del tráfico por la wan 2?. ¿Se puede?. Gracias
