Bring on the commentaries! These were always my favourites on the old channel and watching these commentaries with you guys is a wonderful experience! Thank You!
Phil Tippett and Jon Berg designed and animated the holo chess pieces. Originally there were 2 more that were unused. When JJ wanted to put the chess board in TFA, Tippett had to scan the original latex stop motion puppets, which are now owned by Peter Jackson, and they found the 2 "lost" chess pieces. After doing a digital restoration, they rebuilt all the puppets in silicone, and gave castings of the 2 lost pieces as Kickstarter rewards to people who funded Tippett's Mad God film.
Lots of fond (AND VIVID) memories of watching this on VHS in the 80's along with ad breaks for Atrixo Hand Cream, Cousins Furniture and Velvet toilet roll.
41:00 "Vader got demoted because he touched the Emperors cat"! Guys, I haven't laughed that hard at a random comment in a long time . . . a long time. Thank you!
Thanks lads, always love a common tree. This was my first solo cinema going experience at 9 years old back in ‘97 and I also got the VHS box set for Christmas that year (the gold one). Of the special edition changes I love the space battle being much more dynamic but the Jabba scene was utterly pointless given it rehashed the same dialogue between Han and Greedo and slowed the pace down of the escape from Tatooine. Empire is still far and away the best and I’m hoping they’ll do a 40th anniversary cinema re-release of Return of the Jedi this year 🤞🏼
Oh snap, I thought I'd finally made it to a watch party on time, only to find it was a commentary I watched last week... 🤣😢 Anyway, cheers for the content!👍
Sitting here with a big dirty flu so om coughing along with you lads. 😅 I've never really watched these films, I remember renting there re re remasters when I was a child and found them so boring, I kept fast forwarding to "good" bits but I know everything about them as I love how the films are made, I love all the behind the scenes and extras, I've spent so many hours with people who made the film yet never actually watched them. It's odd but I've done it for a lot of films. Never seen them but could tell you how they're made in detail.
Just watched your most recent announcement lads and thought I'd delete the previous comment I made. Apologies again for any drama and really enjoyed the commentary 🙂
I always put George constant meddling of Star wars (the first one) was because his wife at the time helped save it in the edit. I think after their divorce George got bitter and decided to go back and fuck with it till he felt like it was "His" film again.
That theory Toby Venables had about the empire being a mockery of nature is pretty interesting but I doubt George Lucas was thinking about that at the time lol
It doesn't make any sense, Alec Guinness would just be like: "Shit, is that..? No way is that R2D2 and C3PO over there about to be jumped on deliverance style by sandpeople. Oi! R2, hit the jetpack!" Then they'd be like: "Obi Wan! Me old mucka, bleep bloop". It's some undermining, prequel shoehorn bullshit and it ruins the opening of star wars. They obviously are just meeting, C3PO literally shuts down for a bit, rather than catch up with his old mate. R2 says nothing, O Bi wan says nothing. It makes no sense, why did he write it like that, what a twat. It doesn't work and I hate it.
Richard, your throw-away and humorous comment at the end about it being difficult to find a copy of Star Wars 1 is not as silly as it sounds. If you want to watch it as it was, before Mr Lucas sploodged his CGI all over it, then getting a copy is damn difficult. Since selling off my LD collection I haven't seen Star Wars. I miss it. :(
I have Anthony Daniels book, he was killed doing 3PO in the desert, had heat stroke and all sorts. He said him and Kenny were always taken the piss out of and seen as lesser, just two twats to be used as props. He said that continued for years and they never got the respect he felt they deserved.
That's true! David Lynch was also approached by George Lucas to do ROTJ, he wasn't interested so the hired Richard Marquand because he was Welsh and could shoot the film in Britain without having to pay a heafty sum of money to the director's guilde of America.
@@ValVerdeBroadcasting I think we should check out the subtitles .... The only time Annakin or Ani is used prior to Jedi is in new dialogue for the special editions ... I've always heard that scene as how I suggested above ...
Random (lengthy and uninteresting) thoughts along with the stream (and I've just realized the wall of text and stream of consciousness stuff puts me in an awkward position): - The Death Star trench run remains on of the best (and most tense) set-pieces in cinema - I can't remember the film in question but you referred to a franchise "milking the bruised teat" and this applies with SW - My favourite Saturday morning serial was Weetabix - 16:00 we know what you meant Duncan - Force Awakens did a great job of setting up likeable new characters to replace the original trio, but then 8 and 9 take away the focus from that and it kills the chemistry - Yeah the effects were good but we needed to see a Jawa comically fall off a dinosaur for the film to be complete - The prequels are wank, but I'll always appreciate them having Christopher Lee involved, completing the Hammer duo - I've found that Mel Brooks spoofs generally work in fits and starts, like the ideas end up funnier than the execution - One of the most annoying aspects of the prequels was having the Jedi as boring ass monks (mostly based on the costume in this) because the image we were given here was more of a Musketeers/swashbuckling vibe - Vader is a henchman in this, nothing more (but apparently it was "all planned or whatever") - The security camera in Boots used to look exactly like the interrogation droid - RE: Greedo shoots first - imagine Clint Eastwood doing that shit in the Dollars trilogy - The Jabba scene represents everything wrong with where the series ended up going (and shits on the Millennium Falcon intro into the bargain) - Don't forget the walnut ash tray to go with the lighter - 'Whispers and Dreams' - the new album from Vangelis - The chessboard seems to be one of the most overlooked effects of the film - Despite having Disney+ I have almost no interest in watching the SW spin offs, it's becoming overkill - Come for the space wizards stay for the Holocaust documentaries - It was cool to hear the OG Imperial music in 'Rogue One' (the pre-Empire version of the bad guy theme) - The Anakin/John Connor point was spot-on Richard - The DVD set was to tie-in with Revenge of the Sith because that's when Hayden was in the final scene of ROTJ
Having Luke appear in the finale of the Mandolorean is the worst kind of deus ex machina. It robs the main character of agency in the resolution of his story. And I'm usually wary of arguments against title characters taking a back seat in their own story but here It's obviously done as fan service especially as it's kind of undone by Book of Boba Fett. I feel like it was a reaction to the (imo unfair) criticism of the Last Jedi where Luke appears but doesn't have a "proper" lightsaber battle.
The Mandalorian season 1 was the best Star Wars thing since the OT because it was simple, and Star Wars is at its best when it's simple - essentially a space western with elements of samurai and sprinkled with fantasy. Star Wars is NOT a Tolkien-esque fantasy world. Stop getting Star Wars wrong!!!

i do love a bit of middle-age grumbling. Duncan making Harrison Ford noises and everything else in between.😃😃😃👍
There’s plenty of info in this commentary that I didn’t know. It’s a good mixture of enjoyment, irreverence and laughs. Loved it.

2:10:20 That exit is one bye away from a grant from the arts council.
I thought it was the ending to The Beatles’ A Day In The Life

Fireman Ben Kenobi; joining Cornershop Bond, Hannibal Cretin, Vanilla Pinhead, and so many others, in the ever expanding Val Verdeverse.

The Last Fireman is a Star Wars adaption we deserve.
1:51:00 Apparently it is S-foils, or "strike foils" according to Wookieepedia

This was an unexpected one. Fun discussion, though. Unrelated but RIP Earl Boen. Everyone get snabbed in your kneecap with a pen in memory.
Star Wars, this is the Star Wars, they happen in space.

Cheers for the entertainment lads. Doing rewrites and this is the pick-me-up I needed.
Entertaining commentary, fellas! Thank you.

that's exactly what he did.
I got the VHS box set for Christmas that year also Richard
That theory Toby Venables had about the empire being a mockery of nature is pretty interesting but I doubt George Lucas was thinking about that at the time lol
I always assumed C3PO said the damage didn't look as bad outside the ship because he was looking at the Star Destroyer, not the wrecked Corvette.
I’ll never see firemen in the same light after this 🤣🤣🤣
no discussion about the Robot Chicken Vader-Palpatine phonecall ?
1:05 damn I never expected an Ollie reference on this channel in 2023 but here we are

Ollie is still searching.

16:00 legit lol
I believe Spielberg was being lined up for one of the two sequels (maybe Empire?) but was ramping up for Raiders at the time and was too busy.

Ben doesn't say "Annie was a good friend" 🤣🤣🤣 ... He says "And he was a good friend". The Annakin name wasn't created til ROTJ.
They use the name "Ani" a lot and they are phonetically identical...
@@ValVerdeBroadcasting I think we should check out the subtitles .... The only time Annakin or Ani is used prior to Jedi is in new dialogue for the special editions ... I've always heard that scene as how I suggested above ...

@@ValVerdeBroadcasting oh, lol. Yeah, absolutely!! 🤣
Random (lengthy and uninteresting) thoughts along with the stream (and I've just realized the wall of text and stream of consciousness stuff puts me in an awkward position):
- The Death Star trench run remains on of the best (and most tense) set-pieces in cinema
- I can't remember the film in question but you referred to a franchise "milking the bruised teat" and this applies with SW
- My favourite Saturday morning serial was Weetabix
- 16:00 we know what you meant Duncan
- Force Awakens did a great job of setting up likeable new characters to replace the original trio, but then 8 and 9 take away the focus from that and it kills the chemistry
- Yeah the effects were good but we needed to see a Jawa comically fall off a dinosaur for the film to be complete
- The prequels are wank, but I'll always appreciate them having Christopher Lee involved, completing the Hammer duo
- I've found that Mel Brooks spoofs generally work in fits and starts, like the ideas end up funnier than the execution
- One of the most annoying aspects of the prequels was having the Jedi as boring ass monks (mostly based on the costume in this) because the image we were given here was more of a Musketeers/swashbuckling vibe
- Vader is a henchman in this, nothing more (but apparently it was "all planned or whatever")
- The security camera in Boots used to look exactly like the interrogation droid
- RE: Greedo shoots first - imagine Clint Eastwood doing that shit in the Dollars trilogy
- The Jabba scene represents everything wrong with where the series ended up going (and shits on the Millennium Falcon intro into the bargain)
- Don't forget the walnut ash tray to go with the lighter
- 'Whispers and Dreams' - the new album from Vangelis
- The chessboard seems to be one of the most overlooked effects of the film
- Despite having Disney+ I have almost no interest in watching the SW spin offs, it's becoming overkill
- Come for the space wizards stay for the Holocaust documentaries
- It was cool to hear the OG Imperial music in 'Rogue One' (the pre-Empire version of the bad guy theme)
- The Anakin/John Connor point was spot-on Richard
- The DVD set was to tie-in with Revenge of the Sith because that's when Hayden was in the final scene of ROTJ
Natasha Kaplinski was on the Channel 5 show 'The Wright Stuff' before going onto read the news wasn't she?
frederico valverde lol
Can’t stop laughing 🤣🤣🤣
I thought Obi-Wan said "And he was a good friend," not "Anni was a good friend."
you are correct
I always thought he said "Annie"
