Some people bring all the context to defend and rationalize the player they like, then criticize everybody else with one-line narratives instead of context.
That’s my issue, as well. Doesn’t matter if the rules, coaching, or culture have changed, just look at the numbers! Silly. Subjective conversations like “who is the best” will always be trash because of angles like these.
JJ's knock on Cousy is ridiculous too. Before Pete Maravich, Magic Johnson etc. he was one of the first to transform the both the point guard position and style of play. It does matter if you are both an elite player of your era and changed the game for future generations. There probably would not be a JJ without a Larry Bird and given a little bit of time to prepare my money would be on Bird in a head to head.
dennis (dj) johnson too he was considered the NEW proto-typical BIG point guard before magic came ( he was 6'4") it only lasted 2 years because dj was in the final with seattle in 78 and 79 and was mvp in the 79 final then magic came and revolutionized the position BUT dj solidified his hof status of course with the great celtics teams in the 80s
It makes sense why Lebronze would do a podcast with Jj , they both have no respect for the game or the greats that paved the way for these players today . No integrity or humility .

Bird would eat good in this era.. Would be taking 6-7 more attempts a game. He would easily be averaging over 32ppg in todays game. Heck prob even more some seasons.
Jj tends to take birds shooting out of context. Birds 3pt attempts per game often lead the league or were top in the league. He got more accuate as he learned the shot. Coaching and play style limitations existed also. So what bird did was incredibly.
Bird standarized 3pt shooting. And this video shows that when healthy and taking more than 5 (like current dudes do) he was smoking even the best today. And even if he wasnt , it does not matter. He was clutchier than anyone. Cooper said it well: fuck stats. Its the consistency making big plays in big moments. Period.
How good you are compared to your Era is pretty critical. Physicists today know more than Einstein did. However your average physicist is by no means better then Einstein. Bird helped pave the way for the 3 point shot not being viewed as just a novelty. It was Introduced his rookie year and he adjusted his game to accuracy that is still considered excellent by today's standards and regularly lead the league In attempts. So in that context he is much better than a klay, dame, and such. It's disingenuous and ignorant to attempt to judge greatness for all time and ignore context. However sums up jj though.

I love when these ex players think they are all that and act like if you weren’t in the league you are dumb and don’t understand basketball when they need non-players to calculate the stats for them. 😂
The question is…. If Steph and these other young players never even saw a 3 pt line until they were 22 years old…. Never even shot a 3 until they were legal drinking age, would they still shoot the way they do? 🤔 Killed an entire generations argument with one simple question. Easy 😎
Larry Bird won the first three three-point contests consecutively, is the founding member (among 9) of the 50-40-90 club, where he has more seasons than Steph and Reggie. Check the advanced metrics and adjusted shooting data, Steph's highest adjusted 3-pt % season is 130 compared to the rest of the league, while Larry has two seasons at 150+. If Steph is a phenom in comparison to today's league, Bird was a monster in comparison to his. Redick has fallen prey to the "high numbers over time is greater than greatness during peak" LeBron argument. Or knows nothing about 80s basketball.
@@Kawhiburnergaming It's a matter of eras, 85-88 Bird was 1st in the league at 3-pointers made AND attempted, while maintaining a 50/40/90 average for the period. What Steph did was showcase how the difference between 40% at 3 is equivalent to 60% at 2, and achievable by non-centers. Before then, the 3-pointers attempted had been rising year by year since their introduction in '79. What Bird did was lead a league which considered the 3-pointer a curiosity, and with no coaches giving the go ahead on it, in attempts and makes on splits that even today are considered elite. He was basically, three-point-wise, the Curry of that era, and was more outstanding as such than Curry is today, is what I'm saying. Is Curry, face to face, BETTER at 3-pointers? Yes. But not better relative to their respective eras.
Bird is evidence that people who took a smaller volume of threes generally have a comparatively skewed lower 3 point percentage than someone who shoots more threes. I believe this is because they are generally taking lower percentage 3 point shots more often when they are taking them. Also, 3 point shooting was literally less valuable during Bird's career than they are now. Larry Bird retired before they increased free throws on a 3 point attempt to 3. This drastically changes the strategies available when defending a 3 point shooter. Basically, this is another example of context-less stats being extremely misguiding and unreliable in determining a player's actual ability.
@@blacknetsmed you have an argument because in bird's era taking a three was almost always a bad shot..but the few he took he had the same average as Reddick with the many he took..so by default if he bird took more he most definitely would have been a better 3 point shooter than Reddick
jim brown is considered the best RB ever by many n not once you hear current analyst or ex players trash his era or who he played against to prop up a current player, only in basketball you hear this nonsense, this how jj earned his show with lebron
What difference does it make if Bird was a great 3pt shooter or not? His impact in the game will say more about him than a shot that, at one time, was called a gimmick.
JJ is being a willful idiot not realizing context. In Birds first few years NOBODY took 3s in the normal flow of the game. You didn't take 3s until the game dictated it. He understands that the 3 is more apart of the game than when we first started in the NBA but he can't understand that the 3 was virtually no part of the game most of Bird's career?
Redick always says stupid stuff like this because he's trying to get noticed and be relevant as an analyst. But he's about as average an analyst as he was a basketball player. Back in the 80's the 3 was a gimmick. Pretty much like Redick's analyst career is a gimmick. Dude needs to stick to just providing scores and facts. His opinions are a joke.
How can people talk about the "Super Athletes" and say they would dominate guys like bird when the 2 leaders for MVp this season are Jokic and Luka? Larry would dominate any era just like all the greats
What JJ did was like an average mathematician/scientist of this day, saying that scientists today are better than Sir Isaac Newton. Bird was the grandfather of 3 point shooters!
remember during the 3 pt contest , he said who's coming in second , who do you want chucking up the shot 2 seconds in a playoff game, larry legend at least top 5 player of all time
To understand the "post-modern" mind set you first need to understand it does nothing but invalidate, dismantle, and offer nothing in return but bitching and moaning. Shitting on Bird when he saved basketball. Great take, JJ.
It's a bit weird JJ is trashing Bird's three point shooting since he himself had the similar issue. JJ is easily top 5 three point shooter had he started playing in 2010. Perhaps he's salty because they keep bringing up other people's three point shooting and never talk about his? Which makes Luka's joke even funnier now.
Larry Bird is playing in the NBA today as Jokic and Luca. they cant jump or run fast. Arent athletic and dominate todays game because of the rules favoring scoring. Bird dominated in an era where defense dominated and won 3 MVPs in a row. JJ Reddick has been laying the tracks for his current venture for years. Thats why him and LBJ have that dumb ass show. Because JJ has been trashing the 80s and 90s for years.

JJ Redick is a Bronsexual and a Klutck Sports agent which discredits anything he has to say. They have to artificially prop up LeBalco by lying to us that HIS era is the best and if they can convince us that he is the best of THIS era, the best era ever, then they can claim he's the best ever. This, by necessity, means they have to diminish the talents and skill level of past eras and players because if their argument that THIS era is the BEST era ever, then past eras are by definition inferior. This means PAST PLAYERS were also inferior. It's pathetic. Bird is a top 5 shooter ever. How many NBA players can hit 3 pointers LEFT HANDED (as right handers)? Him, Kobe and a few others i can think of. Lebron has never hit a left handed 3 pointer in an NBA game. They don't play defense anymore, it's pathetic.
Bird is praised constantly by not only his former teammates but by many rivals and basketball experts as well. Magic, Jordan, Kareem, Rodman, Isiah Thomas, Barkley, and Dr. J have all said he was amazing. Guys who never played him like Bill Russel and Wilt Chamberlain have remarked how they thought Bird was the real deal. Even the beloved current day player, Lebron, has said Larry Bird is in his top three favorite players of all time. Like it or not, like HIM or not, Larry Bird was special and an all time great.
I dont know if you finally saw all my posts about birds numbers and context... but Im glad you finally broached the subject. I wish you would have added that yrs 2 thru 5 it was mostly due to his coach who literally prevented him from shooting the 3.. so when he shot 1.0 or below he was in the 20s... and even his last 3 yrs when he was in so much pain he was still a 40% shooter minus the 1st of those 3rs where he had the hand issues so he only shot 33% and he simply didn't practice the shot.. your 5plus attempts stat is fantastic. The fact that he was the pioneer and absolutely a 40% shooter in context he is certainly one of the best ever.. Reddick is smug and condescending.. and simply jealous because he feels he should have been the next bird... he just wasn't as talented. 1 other point... there is a MASSIVE difference between guys like bird miller and curry as opposed to reddick kerr... Its a MONUMENTAL difference when you are the one that EVERYONE is focused on stopping as opposed to a 3rd 4th or 5th option... a guy basically just waiting in a corner for everyone else's work to get them an open attempt... larry usually had to work or create his own attempt.. reddick is a moron
I've been asking myself how low this could possibly get for a while now. Larry Legend? Was encouraged NOT to take 3s. The clutchest player ever, any sport. 1985 L. Curry 45.4 3P% (NBA Average 35.4%) -> 28% better than the league As coop said it: "It's about hitting big shots" JJ is the one who stinks here...

Look up the average TV ratings for the NBA finals. There isn't a single Finals from the past 20 years in the top 20. The 2015 Finals come in at #21. People watched in the 90s and the 80s. Even the 1974 Finals at #12 and 1977 at #15 beat anything the past 20 years. Give me a break, today's NBA is a boring, unwatchable joke. The numbers don't lie.
You know people always look at the past through rose colored glasses. Fans have complained about every single era of NBA basketball since I’ve been following the sport in the 70s. In the 70s they said all the players were on drugs and the games were boring, in the 80s they said the games are only interesting in the last 5 minutes and it’s always the same teams, the Celtics, the Lakers and the Sixers, in the 90s they complained that the game was too physical with the Knicks and other teams, too clutch and grab, in the early 2000s they complained that the game was too Iso oriented and the lane was clogged up and there were no pure shooters left in the game now of course they’re complaining that there’s not enough physicality and there’s too many 3’s and trust me 10 years from now they’ll be complaining about something else and saying how much better the game was in the Curry and LeBron era. I’ve been around long enough to know that’s what sports fans always do. The game was always better 10-20 years ago no matter what sport it is. We just didn’t have social media back in the day to complain about it.
JJ such a joke. 4 total years over 16 PPG...Bird every year except 2 were over 20 PPG and those were still over 19 PPG, while also averaging over 45% FG% every year while also playing with many other HOF players...Bird would tell you what he was doing and still do it...if he only lived at the 3 point line, bet you he would have easily been over 30 PPG every year.

Why are certain people hell bent in trashing the previous eras if basketball? It’s such a forced argument. This doesn’t happen in any where else in the world except for the NBA
Hell, he'll be mentioned after Kyle Korver and Korver barely started in his career, yet JJ was started by...lol, Doc Rivers....who he bashes now too....which confirms he's a two-faced hypocrite. Doc is now exposed as a bad coach who started JJ. Makes sense now. They both suck.
ESPN has fallen off so hard 😂
Bird before 85 back injury would clap LeBron 1 on 1. Deadly pullups and posts with either hand. Lebron couldn't just slash and dunk to 21, Bird would trash talk all his bricks.

If we all saw what Dirk, and Jokcic did to LeBron. I wonder what Bird would have done to him. Because we all saw Bird go against Jordan.
Bird shows so much respect for the guys playing today and routinely touts Lebron as a great player. But look at how his boy Reddick craps on Bird. Sadly, this is why folks hate J.J. and Lebron.

Even in birds era there were people who shot more and made more at a higher percentage
JJ's knock on Cousy is ridiculous too. Before Pete Maravich, Magic Johnson etc. he was one of the first to transform the both the point guard position and style of play. It does matter if you are both an elite player of your era and changed the game for future generations. There probably would not be a JJ without a Larry Bird and given a little bit of time to prepare my money would be on Bird in a head to head.
dennis (dj) johnson too
he was considered the NEW proto-typical BIG point guard before magic came ( he was 6'4")
it only lasted 2 years because dj was in the final with seattle in 78 and 79 and was mvp in the 79 final
then magic came and revolutionized the position
BUT dj solidified his hof status of course with the great celtics teams in the 80s

you’re delusional
If you take only 1 3pt attempt per game, a large percentage of those shots will be half court buzzer beaters and end of shot clock shots. Guys like Lebron don't take those shots, he will pass it off. Just watch and you'll see him do it.

Period.
Jj is comparing him to ALL TIME GREAT 3PT SHOOTERS NOT HIS ERA
How good you are compared to your Era is pretty critical. Physicists today know more than Einstein did. However your average physicist is by no means better then Einstein. Bird helped pave the way for the 3 point shot not being viewed as just a novelty. It was Introduced his rookie year and he adjusted his game to accuracy that is still considered excellent by today's standards and regularly lead the league In attempts. So in that context he is much better than a klay, dame, and such. It's disingenuous and ignorant to attempt to judge greatness for all time and ignore context. However sums up jj though.

There isn’t a single team JJ played on that could touch Larry’s Celtics.
The question is…. If Steph and these other young players never even saw a 3 pt line until they were 22 years old…. Never even shot a 3 until they were legal drinking age, would they still shoot the way they do? 🤔 Killed an entire generations argument with one simple question. Easy 😎
Bird was the most feared shooter in the league with money on the line in his prime....period
He knows enough, he is just propagandizing for Lebron.
Steph shoots 12 3’s per game, Reggie shot 5 and bird shot 2…

I dont know if you finally saw all my posts about birds numbers and context... but Im glad you finally broached the subject.
I wish you would have added that yrs 2 thru 5 it was mostly due to his coach who literally prevented him from shooting the 3.. so when he shot 1.0 or below he was in the 20s... and even his last 3 yrs when he was in so much pain he was still a 40% shooter minus the 1st of those 3rs where he had the hand issues so he only shot 33%
and he simply didn't practice the shot.. your 5plus attempts stat is fantastic.
The fact that he was the pioneer and absolutely a 40% shooter in context he is certainly one of the best ever.. Reddick is smug and condescending.. and simply jealous because he feels he should have been the next bird... he just wasn't as talented.
