JJ benefited from this era as much as any player. He was damn near out of the league after 4-5 years, but then the game opened and softened up and shooting became much more valued.

Imagine playing an era where your defender jumps away from you when you drive, afraid of contact. Well you don't have to imagine if you watch the 86 Celtics in the playoffs. Here is a breakdown I did. Please watch and study the games unbiasedly.
Video name: "1986 NBA Playoffs Round 01 -Game 2 : Chicago Bulls vs Boston Celtics"
5.03 Mchale given a wide-open hook shot near the basket, no attempt by Corzine to block.
5.18 MJ given a casual wide-open jump shot, no contest at all, but he still bricks it. Looks like the preseason rather than playoffs. Seems like contesting midrange shots wasn’t really a thing back then.
5.30 Look at this unbelievably bad offense and defense lol. Bird slowly hops his way into the paint, nobody contests, three red jerseys just standing there watching. He bricks the uncontested point-blank shot anyway. Zero boxing out on the rebound.
5.48 Bird takes a step in to stop MJ, but then he quickly jumps away. Do you know why? Because if you touched MJ you get called for a foul. That’s how much softer it was back then. You will see many super-light touch fouls later in this game.
6.23 Examine the defense here by Mchale and Bird, its hilarious. MJ's drive here is slower than anything today, but the defenders are even slower. Nobody attempts to block. Bird has no actual contact with MJ, and yet he tilts his body AWAY from MJ, afraid of any accidental contact. Lol WTH?
7.13 Look at Parish's 3-inch vertical here lol. And there was zero physical contact with Oakley on his way up. He is a top center in the 80s, but will be totally unplayable in today's nba. This hook shot has no strength, no speed, no physicality, zero elevation.
8.32 DJ is famed to be the greatest perimeter defender of the 80s. Look at his foot speed here lol. He is slower than Kevin Love. It really boggles the mind. Please show me defense like this in a college game today.
15.25 Look at this replay sequence of missed layups and missed putbacks. I know these are legends, but do you really think they can play in today’s nba?
17.01 Here is an example of a superlight foul on MJ. Parish lightly grazes MJ on the non-shooting arm and he gets called for a foul. This is the norm. Can you ever find a foul call like this today? The 80s was way softer, it is the exact opposite of what the oldheads believe.

Bird helped pave the way for the 3 point shot not being viewed as just a novelty. It was Introduced his rookie year and he adjusted his game to accuracy that is still considered excellent by today's standards and regularly lead the league In attempts. So in that context he is much better than a klay, dame, and such. It's disingenuous and ignorant to attempt to judge greatness for all time and ignore context. However sums up jj though.

Check the advanced metrics and adjusted shooting data, Steph's highest adjusted 3-pt % season is 130 compared to the rest of the league, while Larry has two seasons at 150+. If Steph is a phenom in comparison to today's league, Bird was a monster in comparison to his.

@@Kawhiburnergaming It's a matter of eras, 85-88 Bird was 1st in the league at 3-pointers made AND attempted, while maintaining a 50/40/90 average for the period.
What Steph did was showcase how the difference between 40% at 3 is equivalent to 60% at 2, and achievable by non-centers. Before then, the 3-pointers attempted had been rising year by year since their introduction in '79.
What Bird did was lead a league which considered the 3-pointer a curiosity, and with no coaches giving the go ahead on it, in attempts and makes on splits that even today are considered elite.
He was basically, three-point-wise, the Curry of that era, and was more outstanding as such than Curry is today, is what I'm saying. Is Curry, face to face, BETTER at 3-pointers? Yes. But not better relative to their respective eras.

Bird is evidence that people who took a smaller volume of threes generally have a comparatively skewed lower 3 point percentage than someone who shoots more threes. I believe this is because they are generally taking lower percentage 3 point shots more often when they are taking them.
Also, 3 point shooting was literally less valuable during Bird's career than they are now. Larry Bird retired before they increased free throws on a 3 point attempt to 3. This drastically changes the strategies available when defending a 3 point shooter.
Basically, this is another example of context-less stats being extremely misguiding and unreliable in determining a player's actual ability.

I wish you would have added that yrs 2 thru 5 it was mostly due to his coach who literally prevented him from shooting the 3.. so when he shot 1.0 or below he was in the 20s... and even his last 3 yrs when he was in so much pain he was still a 40% shooter minus the 1st of those 3rs where he had the hand issues so he only shot 33%
and he simply didn't practice the shot.. your 5plus attempts stat is fantastic.
The fact that he was the pioneer and absolutely a 40% shooter in context he is certainly one of the best ever.. Reddick is smug and condescending.. and simply jealous because he feels he should have been the next bird... he just wasn't as talented.
1 other point... there is a MASSIVE difference between guys like bird miller and curry as opposed to reddick kerr...
Its a MONUMENTAL difference when you are the one that EVERYONE is focused on stopping as opposed to a 3rd 4th or 5th option... a guy basically just waiting in a corner for everyone else's work to get them an open attempt... larry usually had to work or create his own attempt.. reddick is a moron

In the 70s they said all the players were on drugs and the games were boring, in the 80s they said the games are only interesting in the last 5 minutes and it’s always the same teams, the Celtics, the Lakers and the Sixers, in the 90s they complained that the game was too physical with the Knicks and other teams, too clutch and grab, in the early 2000s they complained that the game was too Iso oriented and the lane was clogged up and there were no pure shooters left in the game now of course they’re complaining that there’s not enough physicality and there’s too many 3’s and trust me 10 years from now they’ll be complaining about something else and saying how much better the game was in the Curry and LeBron era. I’ve been around long enough to know that’s what sports fans always do. The game was always better 10-20 years ago no matter what sport it is. We just didn’t have social media back in the day to complain about it.

thanks for this video = that stat line where Bird shot 5 or more 3's per game shows he would thrive today = 45.9% in his prime and 43.2% for his career are irrefutable proof. JJ needs to see your work here!!!

I will love to hear JJ and Nick Wright 20 years from now debating against former NBA players who retired for e few seasons who will say that NBA players of the 2040s are the more skilled and athletic ever, it's gonna be so fun to watch!!!!
