Reminds me of the commercial when the Hummer was first released for public sale. "If you can't get there in a Hummer, you should reconsider going there."
In all fairness if I were to shoot some acid-blooded monster from beyond the stars I wouldn't mind if the sheer velocity of the bullet sucked out it's insides and blew them well away from me.
Well, of course if you can put those kinds of weapons onto a small, fast craft without compromising it's smallness or fastness, then why wouldn't you put them on your craft?
Ah yes, A-10 logic. Funny enough, in the year of these ads, the classic BRRRT-bird is completely unchanged from the 2020 model, with the exception of vacuum seal to allow for space combat. The wings don’t do anything in space, it just turns by firing and uses them to steer once it eventually reaches an atmosphere. It comprises 90% of all Terran strike craft, not because it’s the cheapest or strongest, but because it simply won’t die and every A-10 ever built is still in service. God Bless the Warthog, the bestest winged bathtub with a chaingun to ever fall with style.
nice how both stories have similar topics :humans are scary for what they can do, not what they choose to do, and "humans are scary because of the kinds of things they make weather or not they are prepared to use them."
Sepheros: "So since you're the new guys we'll ask you for your idea of fair conditions" Humanity: "Understandable, here's some actions that we would not like to do anymore" Sepheros (sweating profusely): "You mean you actually *did* perform these?" Humanity: "And more, but let's keep it simple for now" Sepheros: "....can we solve the issue with a scored fencing match?"
Second one - to quote a weapons judge, "It will keeel." Let's face it, we like to blow things up and the bigger, louder, and more potentially dangerous the explosion the better.
sadly for that last story imparting more energy to a projectile doesn't actually make it penetrate any farther, it just makes a bigger boom when it hits. ^if fired with enough oomph to make the durability of the materials in question a negligible factor a projectile will penetrate until it has displaced mass equal to it's own, adding more energy effects the dispersal of said energy during the impact but not the penetration depth of the projectile itself. at least not until you've added enough energy to make matter stop behaving like matter, which actually _decreases_ penetration depth...and creates a nuke at the point of impact. that's also why there's a funny point at which making a projectile faster actually cuts it's effective range when fired in a fluid like atmosphere, kinda like trying to fire a bullet into water.
Another scary thing about human rules of war is that many of thevbanned methods have been used and the ones we have not we can understand how they would.
Your pronunciation of the Alien Author's name in the first story showed your talent in reading sci-fi. Love your voice and presentation. Algorithm be with you.
Offier: See that guy over there? Private: yes sir, the one 100 miles away? Officer: i want you to hit hime with enough force to kill him and that battleship 500 miles further away Private: Sir yes Sir News anchor: the xenos surrendered after Carl, a private in the reserve, destroyed a battleship with a weapon they picked up from big 5's clearance shelf
If that's a "light attack craft", I don't think anyone would want to engage a "Heavy cruiser". It would have weapons that could destroy whole star systems with one shot, and maybe a good sized chunk of a galaxy. Reminds me of the "Gravity Bomb" in "Gunbuster", they destroyed 1/3 of the Miklyway with one bomb.
@@calvingreene90 Exactly. All it takes is for attitudes to shift or for conquest to become convenient for those weapons to be put to use anyways- it's a flawed doctrine if you consider peace the ultimate goal rather than simply not getting taken over
Im reminded of a story were earth agents captured an alien and were integrating him about weapons . He said they didnt have any but they did have one tool we might consider a weapon called the SNUFFER " oh yes it sounds very humane and just how does this snuffer kill people ? " Asked the agent " again you misunderstand said the alien it is not People we snuff but STARS "
The human weapons section seems dumb. A sniper rifle that can shoot through A MOUNTAIN isn't a hunting gun. You don't want a gun that can kill anything you don't aim it at, and that thing isn't just gonna kill what you aim it at, but everything in the line of fire for miles behind your target. Imagine shooting a deer and killing dozens of people in every town that's down range from you!
Story 1: Sounds about right. I imagine that the Sepherosi when tell Humans what they could expect in a war didn't expect a response with guidelines for RULES FOR WAR! Which should have told them Humanity knew more about war than the Sepherosi wanted to think about. Story 2: Why do I get the feeling the guy who tested the "hunting rifle/sniper gun" was from a low-grav planet? And of course a Human light attack craft is going to outgun anyone else's battleships.
Breaks arms firing. Sounds like that wimp crying about PTSD after shooting one round of 5.56 5hp a AR carbine. Many 9yr olds fire hundreds of rounds a day. (If you can afford the ammo). Accurately
Gotta love the quote " if firing it doesn't kill you, having it fired at you will."

Who *doesn’t* want an orbital lance on their space Winnebago?
Ah yes, A-10 logic.

There was a reason Myth Busters was so popular. Something got blown up in every episode.

Why so much firepower? Because sometimes peace means having the bigger stick.
Non-expansionist powers have militaries in order to convince the asshole next door not to BECOME expansionist.
Peace through superior firepower works.
