You’re a good dude man. I have attempted to also buy back some of my fathers stuff he had to sell or had stolen. My father has always taken care of the family. Best father in my eyes, best husband, best Grandfather and best Mentor and genuinely my best friend. And now that I am almost 40yrs old. I have been in process of tracking down his 1957 tbird, I already bought a 1985 19 foot checmate speed boat he had to sell ti take care of us. And just bought him his dream truck a 2003 HD F150 100yr anniversary and the reaction when I supprised him was worth more then any $$$ in the world. I never really post Videos, don’t have social media other then FB to only use market place. But this video I am gunna post because its worth it for others to experience. So you are a great son for showing your father the world
I have worked at multiple manufacturing/assembly plants, including Manitou Skid Steer Plant. As each machine goes down the assembly line, all the major internal parts (hydrostatic pump, gear pump, drive motors) have their own serial numbers from each of their suppliers. John Deere would then record each of those serial numbers on the build order, and stored in the records of JD Service Department. So even if the main data plate gets altered, those components could be crosschecked against the factory build. I'm sure John Deere could supply that build order.
i am a john deere dealer and i put both VIN's through the warranty system in Deere. your dads is still registered under his name and address but it does show stolen-no company interest. the other skid VIN is also valid and shows registered to the golf course with a delivery date of OCT 25 2002 (delivery dates are not always accurate), and it shows as a used machine. your dad's shows a machine build date of 26 Aug 1999 but also shows a model year 2000. i dont know if this will help at all but this is what i dug up.
Don't know if that will help him either, but this is exactly the type of stuff that WILL end up finding it! People with the proper resources to look into this stuff. Shoutout for taking the steps, thanks bud.
Cody you need to find the engine serial number as well as the machines serial number. They are different as well as the date codes and serial numbers from the hubs and drive motors. John Deere keeps a record of those numbers when a machine is built. It may take some work to get those numbers but I promise you a log book was filled out when that machine came down the assembly line that has all those numbers in it and they will share that information. Good luck and I hope you find it.
Unfortunately i think they parted it out and now theres just parts and pieces scattered across the country, because to steal a whole skid loader and then try to resell it, youd think they wouldve caught it right away at any auction house, the way a pawn shop would have to report serial numbers. His poor dad, i hope they find out who did it.
I worked at a pawn shop and it is required by law to send in the serial numbers from anything we bought to a national data base. Why do people say shit they don’t know is true?

I’d be contacting John Deere to see if there’s another vin location on that machine that the owner can check. The invalid vin and fishy story at the golf course still seems suspect to me.
I work at a Deere dealer. I ran both serial numbers and they come up legit. Golf course is original owner. Golf courses was built on 16JUN99 and WD dad's was built 26AUG99.
Cody you should have looked in the engine compartment for the second stamp of the serial number. All heavy equipment has 2 vin numbers printed on the equipment. Sometimes there are 3 printed on heavy equipment. That would have verified that the VIN's match up correctly. The one in the engine compartment is stamped on and only can be removed by removing the engine and grinding it off. I know this because I used to work on heavy equipment and agriculture tractors

I used to sell heavy logging equipment. Once in the field with a potential customer, was taking a look at a machine he wanted to use as a trade on another one we had. So was doing my usual inspection looking for the vin number, operation ability, wear, and hours. Took a bunch of photos. Which for some reason he was being weird about. Noticed the hour meter wasn’t working and the vin plate had the same missing thing that Cody’s machine had. Got back to my office and sent in all the photos and info to my boss. Got a call a hour later than the machine was stolen and not from the guy I was meeting. Turns out that he had stolen it a few years ago. After some time I was able to get it back to the original owner. He was so happy with the work I had put in to make that happen. Not only did I get him as a customer, he gave me a stack of cash as a thank you. Lesson is if something seems wrong, it probably is.
@@ethanslape8889 You think he deserves more for doing what exactly? Finding a machine that wasn't actually Cody's dads? So I should be able to send in information that's suspect about a random machine and expect him to pay me? Do you have stupid thoughts often or just when you decided to post this?
John Deere used to have an entire Dept dedicated to finding stolen JD equipment and tractors. My uncle had a 4020 stolen, and JD "investigators" found it at an auction 4 states away. The cab was found at an auction in a nother state. It took them some time, but they found it.
@@clashtwo5066 They do that for many reasons. The biggest is that many farmers get new equipment every couple of years, especially combines, by utilizing grants, and they get a massive tax write-off. They then sell the equipment to places like the middle east, or Ukraine, or some countries in Europe. A lot goes to Spain. These places have right to repair laws that John Deere exploits. From there, John Deere sells parts at a higher markup, charging many times more than what it costs if they sold it in the U.S. They produce the incentive for the american market to buy new equipment, and profit more from an international repair market.

10 year John Deere mechanic here. The VIN tag being ripped off is fairly common and the punch writing is normal. You can compare S/N of the machine and the engine or other components to check and see if they match the machine VIN. Check with your local dealer. ALSO s/n 151195 is a good VIN#
I also work at a John Deere dealership. Checked the Vin from the first video and instantly showed where it was bought new from a dairy farm and showed where his dad bought it. And it did bring up a red listed machine, meaning it’s reported stolen. Yeah he needs to talk to a dealer and get more vin #s
Thanks, because the VIN# not being shown as an actual VIN# in these videos made the whole deal feel really shady. If the # is actually good, then this isnt the one.
I'm sorry I agree with what your saying. But the fact the # does not come up is highley SUS. I guess some drunkndumb azz could of engraved it wrong. But why was it removed in the 1st place?. Even if there was wear. Unless the body was changed I dont see any reason Its SUS. Just my personal opinion
@@jaymesnin Tech at JD claim the VIN is engraved like this under the VIN tag. Also this VIN DOES come up as an actual machine. This isnt the Cody machine.
if a car/skid loader is stolen, the insurance company will wait 30 days to see if it turns up. If the vehicle is not found within 30 days and that person has theft coverage, the insurance company will pay out what it is worth AFTER you sign over the title to them. So if it IS found, the insurance company will then sell it at auction or whatever. That is a legal sale, because in that case the owner (now the insurance company) has recovered it. So just because it was sold, doesn't mean they faked any documents to sell it. Just means it was most likely found and sent back to the owner (the insurance company). Normally when they do a recover in a car, the insurance company will contact you to see if you want to get any personal item out, but a skid loader there wouldn't be any most likely so they would not bother to tell you it was recovered. I've been through this as my car was stolen in 1999 and that is how it works. Glad you found it.

There are secondary hidden VINs on equipment like this. John Deere may be able to tell you where they are. They keep stuff like this a secret. Checking that skid loader again may not be a bad idea.
But it should be esy to verify if that VIN that is etched in is original or not? Somebody Remove their VIN Plate and see if theres an etched VIN underneath the plate like this. if not this 250 needs to be investigated again. Still doesn't explain why that VIN turns up invalid either....

I sold insurance for 25+ years and a great deal of that was to farmers with large implements (Tractors, Combines etc.) and with each policy you have to have the Vin number. I would check with Farm Bureau, Progressive or other major insurance companies who insure large implements such as the Skid Loader. If they don't give up the information freely, try applying for a policy with the information of your dad's stolen Skid Loader. (Vin and Model Number) I hope and pray you find it, as I cannot stand a thief!
WD. I'm completely invested in you're dad's skid search. I've been in the industrial equipment industry for 15+ years. Things like the etched VIN on the unit IS actually factory. If you look closely at that etched number, the factory always makes the VIN under the DATA tags in case the tag is ever damaged or unlegable (which is very common for rental equipment that's constantly abused) the factory also always etches those numbers with a Lazer engraver which looks like small dots. If anyone where to try and change a number with an engraver, it would be a solid line over the Lazer dots. 3rd, things like hour meters and arms not working are not uncommon to have failed if in the rental business. Not trying to claim that this isn't your dad's but I wouldn't be suspicious of it just because it's damaged in that way. Also the welded on AUX bracket is very common to break off and alot of companies will weld them back on as a patch fix. I would focus on the VIN which I don't believe has been doctored on this unit like the guy thinks it has.
It's "etched" with a machine called a Pin Stamper. It's basically a tiny air hammer that lays the numbers out in dots. I work maintenance in a Deere facility, I fix them all the time
@@NDC1115 I've always assumed it was with a Lazer but that's cool to learn how it's actually done. I just know it would be very difficult to replicate the consistency of those dots unless you had the correct tool to do so. I also imagine the SN repair process would come with alot of documentation and pictures.
Id think with enough time a mediocre machinist with basic tools could replicate that pin stamp. I feel like I could with a small carbide bit and a dial caliper lol. But I would imagine that your absolutely correct with extreme documentation on the Vin change. I work at Finn where most mulch blowing and hydro seed around the world is produced, we make all our Vin tags in house with a small desk top machine. Kinda looks like a filing cabinet with a tattoo gun on a sliding rail inside lol. I'd think they can't be that expensive and if I was in stealing equipment biz I'd definitely try to acquire one lol. Also that proves that people in all walks of life can be around equipment like this in the work place... with enough motivation anything is possible lol
That dude with the paperwork was sketch. Especially weird how he said "That's weird cuz it's been on property since 1999", which makes it sound like it's there NOW, then when you said "On this property?" it was like he caught what he said and got dumb and started reiterating "The one we sold?". Super sketch.
I really feel like we have entered the next phase of WD. The smashing trucks and having fun is great, but I feel like now he’s transitioned into using his platform on a bigger and better scale.
I think WD has found his niche, this whole finding stolen property and returning it to it's rightful owner, even if it was stolen decades ago, the whole adventure of tracking it down, the reward, the chase etc is enthralling and very watchable. The whole smashing up and breaking stuff is entertaining for a short time and gets a but predictable but this is GOLD hope he does more of these! As an owner of a similar vintage John Deere skid steer (260), I would like to bring up some valid points. 1. Early 200 series Deere loaders had a problem with the parking brake circuit shorting out the instrument cluster. Many units were replaced over the years. One way of identifying this is notice the Deere logo in the cluster. The 1999 and 2000 models had the old style logo yet. Newer machines and replacement clusters have the new style leaping Deere logo. Also a relay harness was added with the new harness to prevent the new cluster from burning out again. This is behind the cluster. 2. Any Deere dealer should be able to pull up your original serial number and also be able to see a sales history along with component serial numbers such as Engine, Hydro, etc. However, the 2.9L engines used in 240s, 250s, and 260s did have issues, and sometimes replaced with complete reman engines with a different serial number. This would show up in the system if this did somehow get done by a deere service dealer. I have my doubts that this machine has been back to a dealer however being it was stolen. 3. The mechanical parking breaks in these machines are prone to failure, so it's common to hear of these with a non functional parking brake system. This is not related to the electrical problem that shorts the instrument cluster out however. 4. Deere did and still to this day etechs the frame in the same way like machine you looked at. This is done incase the tag gets knocked off. Wish you the best of luck towards your journey of finding the stolen machine. I fear though that someone stole this with the intention of parting the machine out. Used parts are worth good money for these. Now days with the age of these, many have been parted out and the rest of the larger parts such as the frame and booms most likely scrapped.
I was thinking the same thing. I dont think I've ever heard of a manufacturer that didn't put the serial number in more than one spot on the machine.(even your car has the last digits of its vin number stamped into the engine block/heads/intake. That's where the term "numbers matching" car comes from) They should've looked at that skidsteer closer, the only serial number we see was only one digit off, and it wasn't even on the plate that should've been there, that plate was missing
we had a 2001 model 250 john deere and had to replace the instrument panel twice because the hours meter wasnt working on it so I would add that to the list of things that mess up on these skid steers as well
To the man who found this, decoded the vin, and explained his theory: You deserve a job offer as a detective. Top tier shit. I was genuinely impressed by your chain of thoughts and how well you made it understandable.
This has been great to watch. It's a great reminder to any heavy equipment operator to make a hidden tag or engraving somewhere on their equipment to identify their property. Best of luck in your search!!!
$300k is freaking life changing for most people. There's a reason you did that amount as a reward and its because you knew it would motivate people to find it.

My grandad is 82 and he was planting oak trees on the back of his property this past year so they’ll drop acorns for the deer to eat. It takes an oak tree 20-30 years for it to mature enough to drop its first acorns. So he’s basically setting up food for the deer to eat for when he’s gone, unless he lives to 102-112. It’s like a wildlife mutual fund.
I can relate to this so much. I own a small family roofing business and in 2012 I had just bought a nice dump trailer, (nice for us, anyway). These things go for $10,000 new. I paid $7,000 for it used. Someone stole it from my property and I haven't seen it since 2013. We even have the vehicle on video but can't make out the license number. Police couldn't find it even with the video of the vehicle. The worst part is, I had to get a loan to buy it. You have to be a terrible person to take something like that from a small business.

Why would someone automatically assume that a large business like a big golf course not possibly be capable of theft? A good detective does not exclude suspects due to the suspect's station in life or economic status. This is not an accusation against the golf course, but the fact that they claimed to have bought the loader with an improper vin number as "brand new" deserves some further investigation by law enforcement. If they are telling the truth then an investigation by law enforcement, which includes contacting John Deere and talking to the new equipment dealer who supposedly sold it to the golf course, could clear up any possible involvement they might have in the theft of Whistlin's Father's loader.
people trying to just get the money and not finding the property are about as bad as theives so i hope you really found it, and kudos to the ones actually trying to help, they deserve the reward.

You probably heard this already, dad's loader was already a little used when it was stolen. Maybe someone took it for parts and took it for parts to fix their own loader. They could have put the motor in a broken loader saved the other parts and scraped the rest of it with the stolen vin cut it up to never be recovered. But it always could be in a barn under a hay bale 5 miles from your dad.
@@TroNPopz209 A Skid Steer, despite costing the same as an economy car, is not a high-profile item that would put pressure on thieves to chop it up. You can literally steal a Skid Steer from somewhere with a universal key and sell it to someone on CL that same week and be done with it, especially if you drive it one or two states over. In the video he states the booms could have been swapped, which is like a two-hour job. But replacing the engine, swapping hubs, re-using the frame is just not worth it for some guys with a trailer looking to score some cash from construction site theft. This was a plate-swap at most.

Pawn shops dont report serial numbers usually unless theres something suspicious about the piece of equipment.
I worked at a pawn shop and it is required by law to send in the serial numbers from anything we bought to a national data base. Why do people say shit they don’t know is true?

So was doing my usual inspection looking for the vin number, operation ability, wear, and hours. Took a bunch of photos. Which for some reason he was being weird about. Noticed the hour meter wasn’t working and the vin plate had the same missing thing that Cody’s machine had. Got back to my office and sent in all the photos and info to my boss. Got a call a hour later than the machine was stolen and not from the guy I was meeting. Turns out that he had stolen it a few years ago. After some time I was able to get it back to the original owner. He was so happy with the work I had put in to make that happen. My Grandpa was a Dairy Farmer and had a 4020. It’s a shame how low some companies will stoop for $.

Unless the body was changed I dont see any reason
Its SUS.

Checking that skid loader again may not be a bad idea.
yeah, maybe
That's a good idea
But it should be esy to verify if that VIN that is etched in is original or not? Somebody Remove their VIN Plate and see if theres an etched VIN underneath the plate like this. if not this 250 needs to be investigated again. Still doesn't explain why that VIN turns up invalid either....

Dude I know your Dad is proud of you. I had the misfortune of living in the " bright lights big city" of Manhattan KS years ago as a university professor - no fun. Saw your earlier video about finding and retreiving your stolen property - good on you❣️
What did you teach?
I sold insurance for 25+ years and a great deal of that was to farmers with large implements (Tractors, Combines etc.) and with each policy you have to have the Vin number. I would check with Farm Bureau, Progressive or other major insurance companies who insure large implements such as the Skid Loader. If they don't give up the information freely, try applying for a policy with the information of your dad's stolen Skid Loader. (Vin and Model Number) I hope and pray you find it, as I cannot stand a thief!
You have provided useful information and I hope he follows it. 👌
This is good I hope he sees it!!
What's up with the VIN number not showing up? That part still doesn't make sense to me.
It's "etched" with a machine called a Pin Stamper. It's basically a tiny air hammer that lays the numbers out in dots. I work maintenance in a Deere facility, I fix them all the time
@@RcFlashlight who knows, most likely they didn't put it in correctly when thet ran it and it IS a legit SN. Because that VIN hasn't been doctored.
You've got a heart of gold Cody. So many people don't understand greed.
That dude with the paperwork was sketch. Especially weird how he said "That's weird cuz it's been on property since 1999", which makes it sound like it's there NOW, then when you said "On this property?" it was like he caught what he said and got dumb and started reiterating "The one we sold?".

Greatest hunt ever.. . your moral character is definitely a great influence for the world at these crazy times. GOD BLESS and good luck
That's where the term "numbers matching" car comes from) They should've looked at that skidsteer closer, the only serial number we see was only one digit off, and it wasn't even on the plate that should've been there, that plate was missing
we had a 2001 model 250 john deere and had to replace the instrument panel twice because the hours meter wasnt working on it so I would add that to the list of things that mess up on these skid steers as well
To the man who found this, decoded the vin, and explained his theory:
You deserve a job offer as a detective. Top tier shit. I was genuinely impressed by your chain of thoughts and how well you made it understandable.
That actually was his Dad's skidsteer. He doesn't realize it. John Deere doesn't etch/stamp VIN numbers under VIN tags

But it always could be in a barn under a hay bale 5 miles from your dad.
yep. already chopped up
@@TroNPopz209 A Skid Steer, despite costing the same as an economy car, is not a high-profile item that would put pressure on thieves to chop it up.
@@fvckingtest Neither of us know what happened to the machine at this point. Perhaps we will see soon
Westin and Cody in one spot.... dream of mine that maybe some day we can get our 68 and 69 chargers together at a car show ❤
Crazy ride from start to finish, but im obsessed with the 2nd dude that said he found it and said a quick "googrel" search lmao. Very amazing to see people doing detective work trying to track things down. Reward money or not its sweet to see people going the distance to try everything they can to find stolen property
