The guy you bought it from was so cool and knowledgeable. To think there's a young tank wiz out there with a whole farm of military vehicles is badass, and you pretty much solidified his passion as he's helped you with your childhood dream.
The best thing I like most about Cody, is he’s true to himself. It’s hard to find genuine UA-camrs nowadays. Congrats on the tank Cody, the chieftain is a badass tank.
If anyone wants to know, this is a cheiftan mk.10 the difference from the earlier models is the 2 bulks on the turret which is added armor and the tank also has a slightly more powerful engine, still slow compared to other main battle tanks from that era
@@SledgeHammerMindOpeneryou can recognise older tanks by how they look. Most were a bit round, often very noisy engines, and new tanks generally are very angular, sharp edges everywhere (especially front), and somewhat cleaner designs. Probably best to know how Challenger, Abrams, Leopard, Leclerc and T-90 (/80/72) look like if you want to be able to recognise basically like 80% of tanks you're gonna see anywhere in the world. Polish now are buying K2 tanks from Korea, they basically look like Leopards 2A4 (although they are a separate constitution). There is also some Italian stuff and Chinese and Japanese stuff but those are not seen outside of their countries tbh.

So many stories from time served on Chieftains. That howling engine at night, in a pitch dark wood as it's getting closer to your hide, we used to chase the poor bloody infantry with them, but then during live firing ex they would shoot our optics out! We would also tell some new infantry lads that the OTT (onboard Tank Telephone) could be used to call home, the commander would act as the telephone operator and keep em their for ages! Last one, we had one of the loader/operators (loading rounds into the breach/radio op) who's leg slipped off the guard rail as the turret was being powered round, it broke his leg into 16 fracture points and the only way to get it out was to slowly hand traverse the turret back to get him out of the turret! Tanks for the memories!
If they can get that close to you, you're already fucked. Tanks + infantry is how it works, you don't just spaff tanks unsupported at the enemy, thats how you get explosives dropped in through your hatches/ engine compartment.
Can we take a minute to appreciate how fast he set the camera down to give his fan some attention?! “Are you whistlindiesel?” Right away set the camera down and said yea whats up!! Full attention went to his fan. Gotta love it.. Humble as can be!

Hi Folks, Yes its a Chieftain and the Fitter is bang on in details pretty much all the way, I was on the Chieftains in the 70,s and can even confirm the one about the engine running away, this is something I have witnessed on an excersize when doing a run, as one of the lead tanks started to emit really thick smoke as it stopped without reason. Then the hatches opened and the crew bailed and ran as the smoke began to pour out of the engine decks faster and thicker, We could hear the engine bustin a gut and then all hell broke loose though we couldnt see the damage happeneing due to the Thick smoke it basically Effed the tank. in fact we had a saying. Chieftain tank, oil on the floor since 1964... BTW the big box on left of turret is a pretty powerful search light, and also has an infra red filter behind the door, so you could have white or infra red light. of course you would need the infra red sights to see the reflected infra red light come back in the sight. the convoy light was a very small normal red light under the rear of every vehicle that a following vehicle would have to follow for night driving in battle conditions. hell of a job trying to watch one tiny red light over any distance. point to note though, the lead vehicle would have the advantage of just pure natural light, although by night this is very limiting you should try it, sit a while the you will be suprised how much more you can see once you become used to the limited light. Just to add. it wasnt common practise to use a tank to take out trees, one to limit damage to the very expensive gun and second not to damage tracks or leave a feking gaping big ass track showing position to over head danger lol. I wouldnt want to be a tankie now though with modern A/T weapons around. sleep tight Ladies.
@@dpaplayz5849 Even with modern AT vehicles, being a Tankie can be somewhat safe if the tank has a Hard kill system that destroys the incoming projectile before it makes contact with the tank.

British. Chieftain. tanks were powered by. engines. provided by British. leyland and with anything British Leyland does its unreliable as fuck so makes sense
I used to drive Mk.11's like that one for a living. They were still being used as front-line gun tanks until 1992 (some units retained a few until much later too) and in that version you have exactly the same gun, gun control kit and Thermal Observation and Gunnery Sights (TOGS was not IR, it was MUCH better) as the newer Challenger 1 MBT, (the seller was in error though, Chally 2 does not share the same gun and it has completely more modern fire control kit) with a half awake crew a Mk.11 Chieftain could still spoil anything on the battlefields morning and the L11A5 120mm rifled gun is still the record holder for the longest direct Tank v Tank kill in combat. A few words of advice lads, regular halt parades (check your track tension and adjust manually) always rev the engine down after use for cool off, don't just kill switch it immediately off, the Leyland L60 in the back is her Achilles heel sadly so treat it gently where you can, it's basically a badly made copy of the WWII German Jumo 207 aero diesel engine. Oh the most important thing, NEVER run the L60 past 2500 RPM, as you can get an engine runaway, where basically it will rev itself to destruction (even if you kill the power, it will keep going) and you don't want to be near the wagon if the lump goes Super Nova in the back. We were instructed in the event of a runaway, aim the wagon up a hill and let the crew bail out., because when the engine goes boom you don't want to be in the vicinity - TRUST ME! Oh and ask any Chieftain crew what the scariest job was, they should answer replacing the suspension spring pack - changing those is the best laxative known to man, done wrong the nested springs will go off like an artillery round and fly down range with bits of whoever was stood in front of them attached!

The trucks in Europe are all cabovers because here the total length includes the whole thing including the cab, whereas in the US it only includes the trailer. So here there's an incentive to make the cab as short as possible to allow the longest trailer while keeping within the maximum length restrictions.
Well, cabovers are an endangered species of truck in the US. There are no new cabover model there in more or less 20 years, the last new cabover model being the Freightliner Argosy.

@@codyr504 Nothing like it. You need to break the track (disconnecting one side from the other). The thing about Track Maintenance is ideally you pull the tracks off the vehicle every month or so and grease every link so it doesn’t squeak. You don’t have to do this, but the track could start rusting and squeaking when they are being moved. Generally speaking, you need to cut the tracks off as they showed in the video. So you will need to replace around 48 new links every year under ideal circumstances, plus many hours of meticulous care of the joints. I also don’t think they showed him how to do track tension, which you need to adjust before taking the track off or it will snap apart violently, and after putting one on so the track isn’t loose.
@@flare9757 you know this guy is gonna pay for others to do it, where does he get all this money? now he'll understand why youtubers dont get real tanks 😆
I didn't hear anything about it being a 6-cylinder, 12-piston engine. That's right. 12 pistons but 6 cylinders. So 2 opposed pistons per cylinder. Really a strange design for an engine, but I guess it made it fairly compact for the amount of power at the time. It is also a 2-stroke, with two cranks.
The Leyland engine fitted to the Chieftain was a multi fuel vertically opposed 16 cylinder weighing 3 ton, an engine pack with radiators and bits was 3 1/2 ton, they were crap, but sounded great, the aux. motor used to start the main engine was a 4 cylinder. If your into engines look up the English Deltic locomotive 2 stroke engine, amazing engineering.

If anyone wants to know, this is a cheiftan mk.10 the difference from the earlier models is the 2 bulks on the turret which is added armor and the tank also has a slightly more powerful engine, still slow compared to other main battle tanks from that era
that what i was wondering because they said abrams in the video if i remember well and abrams are working with turbine engine not the clasic diesel .
Does this hurt the loader?
I could watch these four guys learn about tanks all day!
Congrats
15:30 How neat that you give the enemy a nice little red handle they can pull from the outside of the tank and kill everyone inside🤣
If they can get that close to you, you're already fucked. Tanks + infantry is how it works, you don't just spaff tanks unsupported at the enemy, thats how you get explosives dropped in through your hatches/ engine compartment.

This is a great deal of knowledge. Glad to see someone educated about this trying to help him keep it in a good stand. Hope they see this

as an ex tanker......ha ha ha the lessons you learn... the hard way. A good driver would feel the track walking off and be able to walk it back on
how many good tank drivers - actually own one through ? Ha ha ha !

That whole speech you made that you ended with "I worked hard for this tank. I mean, I don't work hard anymore, I have fun, I just have fun", made you my favorite UA-camr, forever. People like you are what the word "Blessed" was made for, and I can feel how much you feel it. Don't ever stop
I didn't even realize I was watching a 45 minute video until the end. Literally the only person on youtube I love to watch and have watched every video since the start for years now. I can't wait until monstermax 2 is 10% done. Will be another great video. You are the reason I started my own youtube channel.
It's more than 10% done I think

Impossible to imagine the amount of pissed those guys must of been with you throwing that track.

Honestly the fake you dropped everything to chat with fans is awesome plus the conversation at the end of the vid just boosted my respect for you even more! Just top shelf content all the time! Haha I can’t wait to see what y’all do with this unit!
The tank in this video is a Chieftain MK. 11, you actually have one of the last production Chieftain MBT (Main Battle Tank). Not bad.
shut up
It wasn't a bad design. I watched something on here about the design of the turret mantlet... or lack of.
They made that area around the main gun opening capable of being hit and deforming without it impairing the main gun. elevation pivots points.
@@TeddyBear-ii4yc is mg short for machine gun?
And the main weapon of a tank the main barrel or cannon
@@Kranvagn.official
No, i abreviated main gun as (mg). I don't where the Chieftains turret machine gun is.
The pivot points on the main gun is set back away from the turret face so the face can be deformed without it impairing on the main gun.
I watched that on utube but possibly a channel called "the chieftains hatch" or similar.
@@TeddyBear-ii4yc oh OK
By the way the chieftain's hatch's is a great show the speaker is an employee of Wargaming who is are the devs of World of Tanks which has over 100 million players so

Dude bravo. Even the tank shop talk conversation at the end was fascinating. Love the content
Red diesel is another type of diesel in the uk . It’s less tax on it and dyed red to indicate , it’s illegal to use in normal road cars but it’s mainly for agricultural vehicles and whatever else
we have that in the US too... only for farm use, plus you don't want to use it in regular cars anyway because it fucks up the filters
We have it in the US as well
Not tax free anymore
We have it here in the USA. Ag fuel or heating oil
I loved being part of the shop talk at the end. Literally the same conversation styles I have everyday in the army and as a welder.
Tyler you’re awesome you gotta make some UA-cam vids of your own maybe? What do u think?
Man i used to love these talks. Even when back in civilian life. Just late night after fixing up some old shitbox and then just having a good chat about tanks with the boys.
Hey, I know one country in Europe where you can test drive your tank and make a ton of cool videos, bonus points for returning washing machines to their owners.
@cyber nobody cares about your air fried potatoes
Is it one of those secret countries that we have never heard of?

I cant think of anyone more responsible to own a tank. Nice dude, congratulations, looking forward to seeing more tank videos from you
🤣
He’s going to love doing his own track tension and track maintenance.
the "oh no the tank is on fire" drill is going to be sick
You seems you know your shit, what tank is that
@@ucefkh Chieftain, presumably a Mk 10. This version has an uparmored turret front to resist HEAT warheads. This is why it vaguely resembles a M1 Abrams from the front.
Layland L60 multi fuel engine
Junkers cargo plane had it in ww2. They are studying it again since it’s efficient.
Opposed piston engines is the most fuel efficient engines ...
Imagine a Cummins with a similar engine!!!!!!
I’m really happy for you, fulfilling your dreams is the best part in your videos. I’m still trying to fulfill mine.
