    I have round, upturned eyes and yes to emphasizing the lower outer eye! I always watch Korean/Japanese beauty videos and their style of makeup always suits my eyes! I don’t like doing western, cat eye/bold eye looks with big lashes. I rather embrace my own ingenue face and enhance it!

      Cat eyes enhance upturned eyes and sharpness in the face. If you don't have any sharpness in your face or you don't want to enhance the sharpness of your face a cat eye can look off

      Your videos are always so accurate and helpful. I have round eyes that are somewhat hooded, but not really up or downturned. I'm 52, and as I get older, my eyes are more hooded than they used to be. I didn't even know they were hooded at all most of my life. I just knew I didn't have a lot of lid space and there wasn't much distance from my lashes to my eyebrows. I always wore a lot of eye makeup with eyeliner and it looked good, but the older I get, I find that I look much better without so much eye makeup.
      Anyway, your tips are very helpful!

    Agree! I am 55yo Filipina and have almond shape with hooded eyes (due to fold, not deep socket/brow bone) , downturned , with minimal lid space. This trifecta makes applying eye makeup a challenge.

    Love this video! Finally someone who does not exclude the eyebrows. My eyebrows are quite close to my eyes, so make-up tutorials about 'hooded eyes' never seemed to work for me, because they place eyeshadow above the moving eyelid. I simply do not have that much space.
    That being said, I do wear eyeshadow every now and then, even though you don't see that much of it, when I'm looking straight ahead of me, but if you talk, you also blink, raise your eyebrows, etc... so then, you do see it. I don't think it's that important for eyeshadow to be seen at all times, since you will always see at least a part of it, as you talk.

    I think that eyelash length can also affect how big or small your eyes look. I have small eyes with looong invisible/blonde lashes, but when I wear mascara or even dye my lashes dark, my eyes look big even though the actual eyes are quite small.

    • @시린-d4i
      @시린-d4i 8 місяців тому +2

      Interesting I think it’s because the length of the lashes drifts the focus up and out which makes it seem bigger.
      Just like how if your lashes are longer in the middle it gives you rounder and bigger eye look compared to lashes that are long at the outer corners.

    You're brilliant! I love the specificity of your diagrams, explanations, and examples. I get really confused by a lot of vagueness in beauty talk, but you manage to help me grasp what others could not. For instance, the almond vs round shapes of eyes... I was never certain what I was looking at when having it pointed out to me. Thank you, Jenn.
    Also, do you have any tips for someone who is never really sure if her makeup is "too much"? I get confused by what I believe I look like vs what I look like under different lighting, or in pictures , etc. It always feels like its either "I don't know how I thought I could get away with that look!" or "No one's going to believe I spent even 30 minutes on my face" when I see myself after applying makeup. LOL.
    LOVE your work!! Thanks!!!

    • @stylerefinement
      @stylerefinement  Рік тому +11

      You're so welcome - I'm glad you found the video helpful! As for the "right" amount of makeup - I think it's also highly dependent on your personal preference and how you see yourself. My personal preference always sides with the "less is more" mentality, but for certain occasions where photos are taken, I always think "I don't even look like I'm wearing makeup - maybe I should have done more?" So it depends on preference, occasion, etc. I think the most important thing though is how the makeup makes you feel in real life, and not in photos. The confidence that it brings when you look into the mirror is so much more powerful than how "good" or "bad" I look in photos imo. Hope that helps! ❤️

    You can have multiple shapes on one eye! I wish you would add this to the video. My waterline & lashline are very almond shaped, but my orbital bones / socket / crease line is incredibly round, like an owl. This means I have a substantial visible eyelid in the middle, which tapers to being very thin to completely hidden on my inner & outer corners. It has taken me a long time to understand and explain to others this eye shape. A lot of people just go with racial assumptions on how to do my makeup, and it looks bad. Applying eyeshadow is straightforward for me, but winged liner is challenging: do I follow what's pleasing for my lashline or my socket line? When I go with the conventional winged eyeliner advice, the line just sinks straight into my brow bone. When I use advice for hooded eyes to avoid my brow bone, the line looks at odds with my lashlines. I have a system that works, but I hope this distinction is helpful for others too!

    I love how you provide info but only present the range of options, noting that one formula doesn’t fit all.
    I have very hooded, almond eyes with straight corners and thin lids (also a milk chocolate coloring (red undertones)). Liners/shadows crease and smudge. My eyes are so almond that I had to learn an application technique for mascara so the upper/lower outer lashes didn’t tangle.
    I embrace the almond and the hood. I opted for liner & outer corner shadow tattoos (addresses the crease issue and allergies that made me tear up & smudge makeup regularly). I use a serum as a sealer & eye gloss to add a glam glow to my blue black, tattooed liner (subtly thinner line on outer top/bottom corner and soft black shadow.
    I found that using Anastasia’s champagne waterline pencil helps. I use it on the lower inner 3/4 of my waterline and to lightly shade the upper, inner corner of my eye (between crease and brow). It decreases the heavy, sagging look, while making the smoky hooded look pop.
    I use mascara and glossy sealer to highlight outer corner, not to look extra long/thick like falsies.
    I went with tattoo because this enhances and is not a trend, so there is no concern about changing. I am also older (late 50’s but wrinkle-free thanks to genes and decades of constant extra care for eczema) … I do what makes me happy.

    My hoods, at my age, are almost obscuring the outer corners of my eyes, so inspired by Korean MUAs and aegyosal, I'm doing a much thicker line of shadow (always in muted and not-dark colors) UNDER my eyes, and then taking that line out almost horizontally, and blending it with a darker shadow on the outer half of my upper lids. It really has the effect of making my eyes look bigger, and slightly turned up. It's the craziest 'cat-eye' ever!

    I also like that you use a holistic and accepting lens. I think that's very important as well.
    In your consultation with me it turned out a lot of eye make-up styles could work for me, including fun and artsy ones, which I very much like.
    Shame that I found out my eyes get very easily irritated (or plugged even...) especially with mascara and eyeliner/pencil (eyeshadow seems mostly fine).
    I am keeping my eyes open (hehe) for techniques and products that would be more gentle though and until then I can at least curl my lashes and maybe use a little bit of eyeshadow 😁

    My Eyes: round, hooded, up turned, low to medium crease line, high brows, balanced distance…I feel like the weight on my face is kind of big because they are round and bright blue but they aren’t actually that “big” on my face. I feel like it’s kind of hard to do eye makeup because they’re somewhat hooded and low crease and round which is bad for eyeliner. But then high brow makes a lot of space possible 🤔

    This is so interesting. Faces are so weird! 😂 I have large almond shaped eyes that are slightly close set. However, my orbital bone is super round and prominent, so although I have good lid space, I cannot do winged liner, because my orbital bone is in the way. All eyes are so unique and different, and most "universal" eye makeup techniques aren't working for everyone, imo.

    Hi Jen, I love your video’s!! You explain everything so well. Apart from choosing heavy/subtle eye make-up styles, could you maybe do a video about what colour mascara/eyeliner to choose? I feel like black is always the standard, but for me I’ve found that dark brown suits me so much better. I have light skin and dark blonde hair and my eyes have high visual weight because they are big and green(ish). I’d say I’m a soft summer. I find that using black mascara makes my face look pale and more masculine, whereas brown enhances the softer features of my face.

    I have downturned, deep set eyes that occasionally look hooded
    (when I fall asleep on one side my face (eyes and eyebrows) gets stuck in until I move them like with my hands
    My eyes are more rounded and especially since i naturally have thick and dark eyes at the bottom of my eyelids (I think that’s what it’s called)
    I have dark brown eyes and I’ve been told by a “specialist” that I have close set eyes, however I don’t believe that
    I usually always trust specialists but my eyes aren’t close? If anything they’re slightly wide apart
    I think they possibly got confused by my very wide head
    (i have a round/diamond face (the only reason I don’t think I have a diamond is because my jawline isn’t that sharp, its only sharp if I smile a certain way, which is why I think I’m more round also bc of my cheeks they’re quite round))
    But overall my eye distance is average my eyes CAN sometimes seem sharp like pretty sharp but for the most part my eyes are more on the rounder side they kinda look like 2:53 mostly the one w brown eye except my eyes are more bottom heavy and very droopy and my eyebrows aren’t as lifted
    Tbf they kinda both look like my eyes except
    The first ones epicanthic fold and lacrime punctum doesn’t look like mine and the other one does but the rest of the eye pretty much looks exactly like mine (minus the green eye and yk my eyes r downturned and also I don’t wear makeup)
    But these does look like mine a lil bit
    It’s probably cause im biracial
    But seriously it’s very hard to try and put makeup on I don’t use makeup at all but I have tried to edit photos just for fun to see and try different makeup styles
    And I literally can’t make the liner go up and I can’t make it go straight and I can’t even make it go down
    If I try and make the line go down my eyes r too downturned and it just looks like I cried or sneezed mid way while applying makeup ;-;
    It also drags the rest of my face down a lot
    I don’t rly have the strongest jawline and my cheeks r plumb and i pretty much look deprived of all joy hehe
    I find I look good w mascara but not eyeliner or anything that extends my eyes anyway
    Which kinda sucks cuz I have a wide face and liner in theory should make your face seem not as wide
    But atlas it’s ok
    I do look quite good and I can pull of both sexy and cute
    Due to the fact that my face can practically shape shift
    Especially since I have hair that gives a very “sliming” (not quite the word but you get it) that makes my face look
    More oval and less emoji like :D
    But yeah! That’s abt it lol

    1) my width is longer but at the same time almost the same height as it is long. My eyes aren’t that long. It’s mixed
    2) my outer corners are upturned but because I have (fat)hooded eyes, my eyes look straight (at the same level) 7:25
    3) my lids disappears when my eyes relax. I just have fat eyes 😂
    4) I have short eye-lid distance but average-enough space from eyes to brows
    5) They are medium-big but I feel like my nose is more protruding which takes away the attention. So this one has me confused.
    I am trying to find my style

    Dear Jen, thanks so much for your videos, they're amazing!!!
    I've been wondering, would you have any recommendations for:
    a) covering deep shadows around the eye area, for instance with deep set eyes, very light skin or very dark circles around the eyes?
    b) how to shorten the philtrum by using makeup, and how to bring out the Cupid's bow, and what effect which Cupid's bow shape has overall??
    Thank you for your time and attention, and have a great and relaxing weekend!!!!

    • @stylerefinement
      @stylerefinement  Рік тому

      Hi Annett - thank you for the comment!
      I think with around the eyes it depends on the placement of the darkness, but I usually find that the skin around your eye area in general is thinner and more of your undertones show through, so I always try to color correct not just my under-eye dark circles, but also along the inner and outer corners as well and sometimes even onto the eyelid area. I find it helps with evening out the darkness and shadows overall.
      As for the philtrum, using a bit of contour in the cupid's bow area actually helps with making the philtrum appear shorter and your lips appear poutier as well, and it helps with accentuating the shape of your cupid's bow as well! I don't think that the shape of your cupid's bow has a huge effect on your facial proportions, but if it's a bit of an unusual shape it tends to draw more attention to the area in general. :) Hope that helps!

    If you already have upturned almond shaped eyes, should you avoid cat eye makeup? What's the best makeup for that shape? Thanks for these great videos!

    • @stylerefinement
      @stylerefinement  Рік тому +2

      I think it depends on your preference! If you want to accentuate the upturned angle & the shape of your eyes more, then go for the cat eye. If you want a more rounded shape and look to your eyes, then avoid the cat eye :)

    in my case: round, hooded, slighlty upturned, deep set, narrow creaseline, eyebrows not too close to the eyes but also not a lot of space in between
    I am never using eyeliner only mascara and I am powdering the light gaps in my eyebrows (with a matching colour of course).
    Eyeshadow only on special occasions just like weddings etc. but only light/bright shiny colours. It will not stay for long anyways (no matter what foundation) because of oily upper eyelids🙄
    I would really love to wear the bold smokey eyes but it's just not made for my eyes.
    At least it's fun to do the smokey eye look on friends eyes

    The hardest Thing I find for me? Is my eyes seem to mix the puppy vs Cat look. Are closet set together- deep in my face- squish-face syndrome I call it. I have no idea how to make my eyes pop. Hooded lids. Like everything that can make putting make up a challenge. Confusing hard. This video helps me but also leaves me wondering what the heck to do with my type of eyes. :) I’m all over hte place with the shape/ length/ everything. Lol

    Everything you just said clikled for me. I, for as long as I can remember, have always struggled to determine my eye shape, as well as my face shape. I also am an artist that is very aware about how angles can make things look completely different as to how they truly are. In my case, the overall shape of my eye is an almod shape. However I always wondered why in pictures they suddenly looked rounder when they really weren’t. The thing is, I have naturally inmense irises, so depending on how wide I open my eyes or how slightly I turn my face they appear rounder. It’s just so confusing! I actually realised on the mirror that it doesn’t matter how wide I open my eyes, the iris will always touch the frame of my eyes. It’s insane. And very funny. I wonder how in the world can I put make up on them. I guess it only depends on the mood.

I only realised very recently that my outer corner is higher up than the inner corner and was trying to i figure out why do my eyes have the illusion of being turned down even though its physically the opposite. I saw that the highest point of my upper eyrlid is close to my nose and it slopes down fron there and it had to be that and his video confirms that. But i hvnt really analysed my lower lid at all so i dwefintell gotta do that 😂.

      Using face framing layers above the chin level (or just short hair in general) can help with that! A bold lipstick may draw more emphasis downwards and highlight your long middle third so I would advise against it generally, but I'd need to see your face to make an accurate recommendation :)

    My eyes are round, ok. They are “straight” (not up nor down turned), medium sized (not too big, not too small), and average spaced.
    There’s no “problem” for me to solve, I guess… but i suck at eye makeup regardless :\
    I don’t have much lid space and they have a small hood, but nothing that would make them remarkable for that.
