Thank you for this. I’ve always had a really scary time travelling and my first time travelling alone was before I knew I was autistic. It was a nightmare and I had multiple meltdowns, losing my wallet and ID and got security called on me and ended up missing my flight and having to stay in a place that I was unfamiliar. I’ll be travelling again soon, so I hope to accommodate myself better and hopefully have less stressful of a time.
Do you count tiles? You know when you're sitting in the bathroom. Dyslexia sucks. I'm so happy there is speak to text. It really has made my life a lot easier.
Works for me if I say it a few times and then tell myself that tab is open and I can go back to it when I need to, like reassuring yourself you have a good memory and are smart
it works for me by turning on my hyperfocus and forcing myself to ignore basically everything else minus breathing and walking and looking ahead. but the downside is if someone interrupts me to try and talk, i cant engage.
I put together my support bag a couple years ago for jury duty, and it goes with me everywhere now. Most of the stuff you listed, plus crosswords, sewing kit, and sunglasses that honestly get worn indoors more than out. Plus standard travel stuff. If I'm going more than five minutes away from home, I pack the bag. Unloading and reloading it for airport security is a nightmare, plus I don't feel very safe unless I have water with me. I hate air travel. My family tells me I'm always overpacking, but knowing that I have what I need makes travel anxiety a lot easier to bear.
This is how I handle it. Not sure how it will help anyone. Having a quieter less stressful environment is significantly more important to than trying to fix my emotional state. If you CAN travel with one bag, a bag that will fit under the seat in front of you. You can SIGNIFICANTLY lower the stress of flying. 1. No check bag line, that’s a whole 20%-30% of the stress of flying gone. 2. You can wait until the security line is shorter and the TSA people are typically less stressed. Generally having less stuff makes the TSA process easier. 3. If the seats are assigned you can be very last on the plane. So you spend less time on the flight and eliminate most of the awkward interactions with people. 4. You already know you have a place for your stuff so no surprises. Taking a shuttle or any kind of public transportation can reduce the stress of flying but this is heavily dependent upon you and the situation.
I call it my EDC , Every Day Carry. A bag, which is scrutinised before I buy it. Have a chain and keys in my pocket as a fiddleydoohickey. A small knife (rural life) for wood carving. Drawing kit ,some socks oh dear lord don't forget my fresh socks 😂😂 Depending on the trip ,I even carry 2 types of rope and 2 fake and 2 real karabiner hooks. Knife is sharpened before any big trip , utility usage only! Ps. sensei told me, "I'll teach you. Don't you ever use weapons dim-witted they harm or may kill". Me being my autistic self, never will I ever , never will I ever 😂😂😂😂
Do you have more tips for traveling? These were great, also do you have any tips for the Autistic college/university student? I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback. Thanks
Hello Kealynn, first of all sorry in advance for any typos, The Cat that has adopted me is holding my left hand with his paw and he purrs. okay so- do you have a podcast? I am enjoying listening your words and so would love to hear you speak about all da things 🙌🏻💝✨
I have two noise cancelling headphones and 4 eye masks and recently bought earplugs again. I used to use these quite regularly for various reasons, one of which was noise sensitivity. Im actually wondering if perhaps im neurodivergent 😅
I'm curious; how do you deal with the stress of being searched by security, and flights being cancelled? I flew for the first time last year, in 7 years and i swear airports are an autisitic nightmare.
Thank you for helping me with kid who has autism I really don’t like him so I’m sending him to Ukrainian boarding school so he can get drafted into military thank you so much❤❤❤

Get TSA “Pre”, “Clear”, and “Global Entry”. They will make going through Security and Customs a lot quicker and easier- a must for all Autistics!
Im literally someone that if i kept repeating "B7" id forget it halfway through and get lost because i got distracted 😂
There are monitors all around airports, with the gate info on

Those are really good tips kaelynn, you were great in love on the spectrum and I was born with autism

Someone could use that knife against you, so I wouldn't carry it if I were you

On an airplane, if you have autism, just tell the cabin staff and they will let you sit where you want
Just a suggestion you know you can get special assistance so they can help you? Just wanted to let you know that that help is available x

What headphones are those?
