  • The pentose phosphate pathway is also called the HMP shunt and is used to synthesize NADPH and ribose for nucleotide synthesis. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase is a key enzyme, and deficiency results in hemolytic anemia from various not being able to protect the red blood cells from reactive oxygen species and free radicals.
