This BSA is a breath of fresh air, a big single cylinder motorcycle with just enough parts to bring back the reason we ride in the first place. I have ridden over 50 years on twins ,fours turing bikes. I'm tired of over heavy bikes that strain you to handle at low speeds, nice to see one getting back to baciscs,I'm thinking of getting one when I can.

You think 470 pounds wet is light? Seems heavy and underpowered to me.

    • @williamallen374
      @williamallen374 2 роки тому

652cv is lite compared to Japanese bikes that weigh more than 550 lbs in middle weight class. In the 60's a 650cc would weigh around 390 lbs. Everything gets heavier over time, so yes I do think 470 lbs is lite. My current bike is a 2016 Indian Cheif which weighs 835 lbs. Under powered? A big single that is what this BSA is and at 652CC is only tuned at present for a broad spred of power. It is enough for those of us who have had bikes with 3 times current HP. You don't need 130 HP to enjoy motorcycling at its best. That BSA is a torquer that's it's strength it isn't as lazy as might be thought of unless you are coming off a bike with a hundred or more HP, like I did. That single cylinder motor is a double over head cam design, so I let an exhaust is separate an can be timed broader , or closer or anything in between. A single over head cam design is 1 cam shaft with both inlet cam and exhaust cam on same shaft. Double over head cam you have 1,inlet cam on 1shaft and 1exhaust cam on one shaft, for double over head cam. That BSA engine has somewhere around a probable 88 HP. It's all in how it is timed. It probably won't be as smoothe as now running with racier running. Anyway it's is said to have a top speed of 100mph, that is enough for any strength highway. It won't be pleasant going over 75mph as wind blast an bugs will plaster your helmet mask, worse without Helmut. If you can get one just ride it, enjoy it for what it is a bike with good gas milage, smoothe running easy to handle an enough weight to not get blowed all over the road as lighter bikes do. And one other consideration, Insurance which will be much less than my Indian.

@@williamallen374 My current bike is a 2016 KTM 690 Duke, 360 pounds wet and 69 HP. Over the last 35 years I've owned many other big singles including DR650, Dakar (3 of them), SRX600, SR500 (3 of them), XR600, XR500. Obviously, I have a fondness for big singles. Other multi-cylinder street bikes, well another 50 or so of many different marks going back 50 years
Point out a Japanese middle displacement bike made in the last 10 years that weighs 550 pounds. Or 500 pounds. Or 470 pounds. I'll mention one, the Suz Weestrom 650 at about 475. But that's an adventure bike, and a pretty wheezy one. The SV650 was more like 440 pounds. And all of these bikes have more like 60-80 HP. Which means they can at least get out of their own way.
This Goldie has 46 brake HP, maybe 38-40 at the rear wheel. And carrying an extra hundred pounds over a typical bike of that power means it will be pretty doggie. That's what it comes with, which is pretty much end of story. Any bike can be stripped and turned into a fire breather with enough money and trouble but that will be maybe one in a hundred for a duffer bike like this.
A little extra torque at low RPM is a nice kick in the pants puttin around town, but it's horsepower that gets the job done. But in this case I don't think it's going to feel all that grunty, that 470 pounds you know.

It's a beautiful bike. I only wonder why they didn't keep with the original 500cc air cooled motor. I get that they were trying to compete with the interceptor and continental, but they would be filing a hole in the market for a 500cc single, since Royal Enfield stopped producing the 500 classic last year. I was lucky enough to purchase one of the last classic 500s, and I love it. I really like the look of the new gold star, just the water cooled motor bothers me a bit, doesn't make it any simpler. More maintenance and things to go wrong, it's going to cost you more money in the future and potentially a lot more trouble. Time will tell, I hope they last the distance. But how many people like me will be waiting a year or two before even thinking of buying one?

Glad to see BSA (Birmingham Small Arms) is coming back to life. I had three in the sixties, 350 single, 500 & 650 Twins all blue. Not a Gold Star! The oil lines were exposed at that time and my oil line crimped in a Canadian Trip I took with my brother. The engine ceased and had to be rebored. It was repaired during an overnight stay on Prince Edward Island. It broke down again going home and I had to put in a thick oil additive to keep it running until I got home. Had to have it rerepaired. I still loved those bikes, but wish the new one was a twin! Good luck with this one. Now I have a 1991 Sporster 1200, Yellow, a 2014 Roadglide anniversary addition, brown and a 2014 Indian Vintage, red. I went cross country inn 1973 on a BMW R69US and loved that bike too. I am so glad BSA is coming back to us. Brings back a lot of memories.

I remember my BSA as a lot of fun, but also I remember several hours of maintenance each week to keep it in adjustment and to keep things from shaking off. I hope the electrics are better, I had to turn off the headlight to get enough spark to pass cars. My Hondas were hit the starter and ride, refuel, repeat. Also, this is a Mahindra, not a BSA. I've had a Stella scooter for 18 years, made in India, and it runs fine and gives no problems, so they know how to make things over there.

Being the age i am i remember well riding motorcycles with a big single cylinder engines, Velocette, BSA, Royal Enfield, AJS etc. and what a wonderful thing they were. Torquey, simple and generally a more relaxed loping ride due mainly to the longer piston stroke they generally had. I hope the new Gold Star has retained the under square long stroke engine dimensions of the old bikes, if so, it should be a winner.

I did a 250 mile round trip to the Bike Show at the NEC to see this bike; the examples on the BSA stand looked to be beautifully designed, excellently built, and very nicely finished. I am truly impressed, I even (unsuccessfully) tried pumping Bal Ghataore (Design Manager) for a hint at the price point - all he would say is 'it will be sensible'. I would be very surprised if it's anywhere near as low as the £5k you suggest; I think they will be pitching it higher than that, as I believe they will aim to fit between RE & Triumph.
As far as your video goes, it really hasn't bought anything to the party for me - a prospective buyer - I'm sorry, but unless you are basically in the pay of BSA, at the moment - when no-one outside of BSA has had a chance to ride the machine - there is no way that you can conclude and title this video 'Why it's the better choice'. It could turn out to be a complete dog (though I certainly hope not). Also I physically winced when I saw the banner saying "Break Horses'........ look up what a dynamometer (also called a 'brake') is and how it is used.

I'm 70 and going on 16 after absorbing the new Goldstar .My singles were a 1968 Ducati 250 Scrambler and a Suzuki LS 650 Savage.Nothing else compares to a big single piston engine thumping between your legs and brain.I longed for a old school style version rather than a cruiser and more power. This is that and I have a renewed enthusiasm for the sport that had faded over the 10 years since selling the Savage.I am clearly obsessed .I've even contacted several Royal Enfield dealers to see if they will distribute this gem in the USA.That would be a perfect stablemate for the Interceptor twin 650.The discontinuation of the R.E. 500 single was perfect timing and the dealer network is in place. Why reinvent a new network?
I thought about getting another Savage in the interim of non-availability of the Goldstar but don't want to risk life and limb before that beautiful dream appears in my driveway.I was mildly excited by the Duke 690 and the Svartpilen but was not keen on the motocross appearance. The Vitpilen was a beauty but the riding position was a deal breaker.Happiness is only a Goldstar away. It's good to dream about the future again.

The type you sometimes saw kitted out with clipons, farings, hard seat and uncomfortably cramped riding position etc. The style I wished for then, later became the standard theme for nearly all roadbikes.

I still have a 1955 BSA A-10 that I restored to a show winner back in 1986 , it lives in my garage only being ridden around 6 miles to the shows and back home , I wish I could ride it more but because of a back injury it now sits along with a few other of my bikes . I always wanted a Goldstar and even though t s not the same thing as this new bike I now have the chance to buy one and park it next to what will now be "Grandma" , The new bike is sharp and I'm glad they kept it simple , my bike is a "pre-unit" and can run even without a battery , the spark is done with no electronics but with a magneto like on a lawnmower and the lights are done with a 6-volt positive ground generator , it has no ignition key so to keep people from riding off remove the brushes out of the magneto and put them in my pocket , it does have a steering lock , that old bike is bulletproof and will still be going in the next 67 years . The only major issue it has had was a blown oil pump , everything is original down to the 6 volt lightbulbs being of 1950s vintage except for the paint , I kept it black with red pinstripes around the chrome on its tank ( no stupid-looking racing stripes ) . I hope that the new BSA comes out with a sidecar model , that would be cool .

If they step into the American market with a machine that is tight, then that will give RE a run. Many of us who bought the 500 cc Bullet did not walk away from the experience loving the company, and their response was, "Sorry about that." Imagine taking $7,000+ dollars and just setting it on fire. For this rider, that was exactly what it was. BSA has a shot at the Enfield Market in the States, and I for one hope they go for it.

@@timothyahernRoxyCat personally I can't see how people can spend the money that they spend on a new bike when they could get much more of a bike used. For $7,000 you can get a nicely restored British bike that not only looks good but has been mechanically restored and or updated with after-market parts that were better than original Factory parts. And there are low-mileage B still out there waiting to be found. Last year I got a beautiful 1964 BSA Starfire 250. 6000 original miles, matching numbers, everything works. With such low mileage you know nothing has been bothered with half drunk idiots who think they know what they're doing. The old Royal Enfield that was the bullet was the real deal. Like the Ural motorcycle sidecar outfit it was basically a decades-old design still produced it has low power because the market needed reliability overspeed. If Shane somebody was still producing the Model T Ford and you bought one and you try to drive it on the freeway in the fast lane until the motor exploded that's not the car's fault that your fault. To me the new Royal Enfield motor is the same as a Suzuki Savage 650 single motor or a Yamaha sr400 motor they are all good Motors and the sr400 is the real thing downsized that I knew in high school. And the Suzuki Savage will be almost 30 years old soon. The new Triumph has nothing to do with the old Triumph and they made that perfectly clear when they bought the name separating themselves from Meriden. They made Kawasaki copies under license 4-cylinder super bikes that had no relationship to the parallel twins the old Triumph company produced. It wasn't until they established themselves as a producer of modern motorcycles that they brought out the Bonneville retro twin. And it was more like an alternative to the rest of the line that they produced. When Triumph was made in England that was one thing, but now since they make all of their bikes in Thailand and all of their parts in Taiwan other than the name that they have on the side of the gas tank that's the only thing British on the motorcycle. Now they charge a made in England price for a made in Thailand motorcycle what's in a name eh?

Gorgeous retro-style & finish, but so much tech & smoothness that lost its 'soul' as compared to my 60's Bonnevilles. So I sold it after 11 mos. I love the look of the bike, but having ridden motorcycles for over 45 years, I've found that going back in time isn't always what it seems. While bikes like my 78 KZ1000 Kawasaki on modern tires and with improved suspension and brakes seems terrific on today's roads, some of the others in my collection do not stand up to the memory I had of them in the day., including the one Triumph and BSA I own. I'd like to ride one of these, but I don't know that a single cylinder motorcycle even with the many modern improvements would suit me in 2021, despite my age I've moved with the times and am simply used to more power and refinement than I was in my youth, so I'm not sure a 650 single could cut it for me. I am however very excited to see the BSA name reborn, I hope they succeed, the problem I see for this model is the number of people still alive and fit enough to want to enjoy this sort of nostalgia, which will inevitably impact overall sales.

As a previous owner/rider of a BSA myself, I find the FACT that the lubrication issue of this engine being totally ignored as a serious downer. The original BSA bikes were a DRY SUMP, in other words oil did not acummilate in the sump, (which they didn't have anyway,) only a small depression where the oil pump was able to pick up the oil and pump it back to the OIL TANK, fitted under and to the side of the seat. This system created serious issues with oil leaks as the components of the engine cases were split verticly and oil passages passed from one side to the other and thus leaks developed over time. The Japanese brought in horizontal split crank cases where there were no cracks or splits to develop oil leaks, and the sump stayed full of oil, no oil tank external. So,, we can see this issue is quiet important, yet not a peep for prospective buyers. Does not do the sales pitch, IMHO any good.

If they are going to use a rotax motor to power the so-called new PS a gold star I wish they used the old air-cooled rubber cam Drive motor that they used in the reissued matchless that came out in the late 80s or 90s I don't remember. That bike was much nicer looking and the engine fit the bike. It was a good-looking motorcycle. And when attached to a Jawa sidecar it looked pretty cool. Much nicer looking than the so-called new PS a gold star.

Bobby, can't really disagree with you. I think the design/styling is spot on. These are pre production bikes that we are seeing so hopefully they will do something about that crude looking radiator and the pipes/tubes/wires around it. They need to tidy that up. The brushed steel exhaust looks nice but oversized. There seems to some black paint the brushed steel which can be seen from some angles. That looks tacky.

Yes I don't disagree, the cumbersome radiator only adds to the routing, and shape of the exhaust header pipe which definitely spoils the look of a good looking motorcycle otherwise. And compared to other multi cyclinder motorcycles, the radiators framing looks a bit on the large size.

Think the Vincent Black Shadow is much more iconic so your initial premises is B/S. Most people who have never ridden a bike wouldn't be able to tell you what a Goldstar was. This is a 'pretender bike', with totally unknown characteristics and price - nobody has ridden it, or even heard the bloody thing run, could be the biggest POS going - just don't know that yet. Its from an unkown manufacturer, with an unknown dealership network, with unkown customer aftercare support. You are being blinded by a bought badge and a appropriated name and marketing b/s that trades on a heritage that this new firm does not have. Your pricing predictions are way too low, from what I've heard from people who visited the stand and managed after a while to screw some kind of indication out of the sales people -you'll be looking at 7K ish...

Keeping it as simple as possible is definitely my preference. The ubiquitous modern classics fail in this regard. Wish they had kept it to air-cooled . . . at this engine size it would have been entirely doable. The radiator just kills the looks. Won't buy it for this reason alone.

Having starting out with UJMs I am a fan of air-cooled machines, liquid cooling has been around for so long that it is the dominant norm. Heck, even the Wright brothers used a water-cooled gasoline engine on their history making Flyer back at the turn of the last century! Triumph does a very nice job of incorporating the radiator IMHO.

People say it needed water-cooling for emissions reasons Royal Enfield two motorcycles are air-cooled. The Suzuki Savage is air-cooled and still has a carburetor and when I last checked we're about $8,000. There was an article in classic bike magazine where a guy took a Suzuki Savage and put alloy tank seat and pipes on the motorcycle and it looked really good like a big single from the 50s or 60s with a cafe racer Style.

At 7000 lb I guess that would be 9,000 American dollars that's a lot of money. Even the Suzuki gn400 which was an enlarged Street version of one of their 4-stroke dirt bike kick only of course, and it had cast wheels and disc brakes on the front.

With its polished aluminum and yellow tank and black frame it was beautiful!! I'll even forgive the nasty scar it left on my leg from not pulling the compression release properly! LOL I 'thumped' along 10k miles on that old girl! Loved every mile! It took a year to re-learn how to shift on the left properly, not right! LOL Some things get in your head early are hard to change. 8) I hope they make the Victor 441, but I doubt it. Memories.... 8) --gary

Why don't we set up a Goldie Challenge, when the Isle of Man TT races begin in 2022, and put a REAL Goldie clubman in a race with the new pretender ? One lap each on closed roads. Should be fun.
