    The most Relevant interview as far as BSA is concerned . Brilliant and being from India I feel proud that the effort taken to keep it as close to original as possible. Hope they launch in India soon after the British launch

      You should see it as it’s now going to be made in India and not the U.K. although it carries the Union Flag I was in the market for one as I used to ride BSA,s in the sixties ,but please do your own homework on this as for me although I love the old BSA my next bike is either a Kawasaki W800 or one of the larger Royal Enfields

      @@alanwareham7391 it most probably can't be sold in India. A cycle manufacturer owns the BSA trademark here. And BSA is far from a big name in India. Almost all of the attention (although very little) the bikes have gotten is very recent.

      They don't have plans to sell it in India that's why doing everything in uk and RE will kill them here.

    I'd love to see it succeed.
    One of the most iconic names in motorcycling back, and if it's designed, and later made in the UK, so much the better.
    A good start BSA. Hopefully more to come.

    I remember being 3 year old and my dad used to hang a calendar full of BSA bikes and since then I have always dreamt of owning a BSA, it was a love at first sight for me.. and being 27 yr old I think I am ready to own one :,). Thanks for this video and reigniting my childhood dream!

    I am 60 now and grew up on Japanese bikes. I was well aware of BSA's from my dad who tutted as I bought a Suzuki. The BSA bike will be for the elderly generation, not young people and as this demographic population is huge in the major western economies it should sell very Well indeed.

      @@onecookieboy I don't think it will sell well in the uk either because English bikers are wise to cheap copies wearing an iconic British badge (AJS) I looked at the website earlier and they actually want people to believe that this is a BSA making statements along the lines of but not verbatim " the soul of BSA". BSA made their last motorcycle in 1973 before the company finally went into liquidation in 1978. I seriously doubt that this bike will be much good, having read the road test report it's a lot heavier than the original goldstar and even with 150 cc more it's actually slower which considering the last goldstar was made 59 years ago is shameful. Now, I know that there will be plenty of people saying "but it's not all about speed" duh, that's exactly what the goldstar was about, it was a race bike. The only thing I can see this thing doing is deliveroo.

      @@jatin2866 no, royal Enfield has been around for about 100 years and have constantly made motorcycles moving production to India after the second world war and you're right they have a huge following but BSA built their last bike in 1973. There's too much of this "relaunching" of long dead brands, I mean seriously WTF has some cheaply made Chinese mpv got to do with MG? Changing ownership of a company is one thing but buying the right to use the name of a famous marque with the intention of misleading potential buyers into thinking that they are actually buying a BSA, an AJS or a MG when in reality they are often, not always, a badly made parts bin special badged as a classic.

    I have been waiting for the actual production bike to be released. I really like bikes that look the part of honest and timeless classic design. I think BSA did as well as they could given their approach. So far this bike seems nothing like a classic designed bike other than some aesthetic bits and logos. Also, there is no shame in admitting the bike will be made in India as they produce some pretty amazing motorcycles in that country. I don't think moving production to England will ever happen. And.... I have feeling BSA knows this as well. I understand why they went with an off the shelf Rotax engine. They are solidly engineered, reliable and most importantly, considerably cheaper than developing a proper, BSA designed, air and oil cooled engine. If they do design their own BSA engine, success would be far more likely. Hopefully that is the plan as the company develops. However, compared to an RE Interceptor... the BSA is lacking the details that make this segment of bikes so desirable to many. I wish BSA success, but I think they have a long way to go with this model.

    Good interview with Mr. Joshi. I;m impressed with his comprehensive and realistic views of modern manufacturing and of the retro bike market.
    Recent reviews (circa December, 2022) seem to indicate that the suspension bugs have been worked out, while the off-idle jerkiness remains.

    What a stunning looking bike and a very good honest review, the breaks and suspension would not stop me from buying this bike its stunning, hope to see a dealer in Aberdeen Scotland very soon as I would love to take one out for a good blast

    Excellent review as always John. The suspension is easily improved as you point out and personally I'd want a fruitier exhaust. It will be interesting to see how they go and stand up to UK wear and tear.

    I love the looks but I intend of getting the Interceptor, that 270o crank sound is just amazing with pipes and you can get some decent power with some fairly cheap fettling. This Goldstar is beautiful though. If it had a 60-70bhp version and maybe slightly more premium suspension I'd probably switch.

      If you want 60-70bhp from a 650cc single then go and look at KTM or Husky etc, very different bikes and they aren't exactly very new rider friendly or retro feeling?

    In this class i choose bsa 👌🏻 Suspension maybe isint perfect but i like big single 5 gear dimension and strong lowend 👌🏻

    You ask the questions we all want asked ! I’m sorry for sounding like a stuck record but you are a proper journalist !
    Thank you so much for your efforts. When I watch one of your videos I always actually learn something, which is the only reason I click on a UA-cam video in the first place !
    Because of the uncertainty over dealer support and the fact that the RE 650s have great dealer support, I still find the higher price for one cylinder less hard to swallow. The switchgear too is not really what you would expect, it shows a lack of effort on BSA’s part and makes this feel like a bit of a cynical cash grab ( as does the “we want the UK market above all else” intonation coming from the CEO 🙁 ).
    As a motorcycle though, it does look fantastic. I just think the RE twins are a much safer bet for people with less money than sense !
    Fantastic review and summary of this brand relaunch though, as I would expect from you !

    It is an obvious comparison with the other bikes mentioned and yes it will be in direct competition with them as another retro styled bike, even though it's a single cylinder competing with parallel twins. I presume this is a line coming from bsa as it's been mentioned in all the initial reviews to come out of this test day so far. I still look forward to seeing this bike out on the road though. I hope they can get the finishing touches right and do justice to the brand.

    So I just bought a new RE 650 Interceptor yesterday. Having put 17k miles on my 21 and 22 Africa twin DCT ADVENTURE in a year.
    And having owned many 100 hp + bikes .
    Don't buy a RE 650 for a performance thrill. It's just a nice smooth
    running relaxing easy bike to ride.
    I started riding over 50 years ago and this 650 RE Interceptor kinda takes me back there . But just a more refined bike.
    Ride it for what it is intended. I'm pretty sure the BSA will be a very similar ride.
    Lot of times while riding I wish my dad was still alive to get to ride all the new bikes. He rode mostly 50s and 60s BSAs and Triumphs.

    Not sure the water cooled single has more appeal than Enfield's air cooled twin, it is a nice looking bike though and it's nice that we have another manufacturer doing retro style bikes made of proper metal and stuff. I suspect the weak brakes might be down to a cheapo master cylinder not getting the best out of Brembo kit? Actually really interested in what the EV will be after doing a Zero demo day last weekend!

      It seems they aren’t really all in on the concept are they? If they were they would have built a new engine instead of taking the Rotax unit originally created for the BMW F650. I get the impression they will see how sales go before decoding whether to seriously invest. The steering and handling will be hampered by the shallow rake and relatively fat tyre on the rear. The Harris influence at RE clearly shows when you ride their twins

      Just can't get past that radiator and the attempt to make the engine appear air cooled. The RE 650 and new 350 engines are works of art and just a joy to ride and admire.

      @@morri03 This bike should be powered by a long-stroke high-torque low-rpm engine and then would be more appropriate to the retro style frame. but as of now, it feels like a ktm 690 engine in a vintage body.

    Ricardo (diesel engineers) they made the BMWk1300 engine, re-engineered the K1200 engine, made the gearbox for the Veyron so touching this BSA was easy…. A true (last) British engineering success that’s been around a century…

    The engine look for all the world like a Rotax 650 single with slightly different covers, one of the greatest engines of all time.
    For my money, that alone makes it worth owning...

    I love the fact that in 2022 there is a 650 single. Awesome option, no matter the features. As for "heritage", imho almost a rude word in motorcycling, I do not understand how bunch of Indians buying British brands is a continuity to the legacy. Royal Enfield and BSA died in 70ies. Indians bought rights and now they make some bikes. It's not a continuity. Same name, totally different game. New brands, no heritage at all.

      now 73 .had a new bsa thunderbolt 650 twin in 1969 in black and chrome .£299 on the road from Elite motors tooting london. a cancelled export order. six brand new bikes lined up in a small room along the road from the main showroom.went down from the midlands with a friend one Saturday,chose it .went down the next Saturday picked it up rode it back up the M1.great memory. it was the first bike my wife had ever been on when we met. we both still ride,she has a vespa and i have a newish Royal Enfield ,a vespa and a Honda a d v 350,you can never have too many toys.my wife is 71 and in our living room there is a 1951 b s a bantam and a 1951 james captain,both hers.

      There is a reason that there are no longer 650 single road bikes, they suck. A big bore four stroke single might be good for a dirt bike, not so much a road bike. I think RE got it right with a 500 single with no sporting aspirations, but hanging off the coat tails of a bike that was a performance bike 6o years ago is just a marketing exercise.

      It's payback. We bought dead british brands and a few tribal necromancers brought them back to life. They're now selling well and making a lot of money.
      British were never good at making money without looting and slavery.

    What I fail to understand is how we as a nation had some of the world's best engineers and designers yet managed to destroy all we had. We now buy in motorcycles that I can remember as original like the dbd34, Enfield interceptor plus many more. We now buy in motorcycles that have the style of the originals and trade on our history. Why on earth can we as a nation not do the same or have we sold of all the family silver and have nothing left to trade with.

      BSA was let down by the upper management. They rarely invested in new equipment or designs.
      There's a very detailed explanation online, it's someone's doctoral thesis.
      All the other bike manufacturers were too small to compete (and also too set in their ways).
      Car makes? Mixture of unions, bad designs , bad management. In BL's case , too many divisions competing with each other without common parts. Oh, and Lucas electrics.

      our industry was not foreward thinking.also developement was stagnant. investment was lacking. bikes were not looked upon well by a lot of people.if you went into a shop eg. for clothing,not bike clothing,you were looked down on. in1960 the japanese arrived clean oiltight bikes with self starters and the saying. you meet the nicest people on a honda. very sad but that is how it was. the new bsa needs more quality to badges and paint on tank was mentioned .not good enough.

      @@randompete2204 That's an interesting answer bearing in mind that the decline occurred over a period during which administrations of both political persuasions were in power. I would say it was down to natural forces and that infact the British Motorcycle industry was dealt its death blow ironically by the working man. Not for any nasty reasons but due to the totally reasonable aspirations of personal betterment and the desire to own a car. Back in its hey day the motorcycle was the working man's form of transport, having taken over from the bicycle of a generation earlier. As cars became more affordable then the market for motorcycles became smaller. No sensible person would chose to invest in a shrinking market. Nowadays or certailny until before Covid (things might be changing again now) the market for motorcycles especially large ones is mostly leisure. Who could have predicted that 50 years ago?

    It's a beautiful looking bike. As you rightly said, the quality of parts like cheap sticker on the fuel tank, switch gear, paint job on the tank...etc needs to be improved. Somehow the exhaust thump is not that great for a single cylinder 650cc bike.

    I am truly desirous to see BSA succeed especially if it can be built in the UK (yeah I am an old Brit 74 yrs young now living in Australia). However the radiator still turns me off the new Gold Star, I fully understand we have now to meet new immission standards so we are stuck with it. Good luck with the new project no matter where the bikes have to be built/assembled. The electric version which is now a reality will never be for me.

      Make it 1200 high torque lower power set up and I would have one if its as great looking as this Goldstar. Always been fond of the A10/Lightening.

    The Parallel twins you referred to are not all the same. Some have a 270 degree firing interval and others are 360. A 360 degree firing interval on a vertical twin is much like a single in its character, But RE's are not configured that way.

    Not realy my kind of bike but I wish it well. Mr Joshi seems like one of the straightest talking people in the industry. I would be more interested in a big bore twin version based on two of these cylinders but its nice to hear good intentions anyway.

    Its a good looking bike, it's priced well. If reliability and dealer backup works well then BSA are onto a winner. I just hope main stream manufacturers are taking note that not all of us want electronic gadgets/modes and farkles that push prices towards £20K

    Fair report. I agree suspension should be improved as well as paint quality and braking point. Especially from the front fork (and brake) I expect flawless function. (...in this price range)

      What about the Interceptor 650 😂 it's a parallel twin, 47hp, a bit more than the gold star and 52nm, a bit lesser, and it comes with a 6 speed slipper clutch and is slightly cheaper if I'm not wrong.

    Being 71 years old I'm starting to think that my 1200 Bandit that I've had 21 years is getting a bit of lump for me. I thought this Gold Star might have been the bike for me. I called at a dealers last month when they got one in. After a good look around it, I didn't need a test ride. Just looking at the welding on the frame and the el'cheapo BSA plastic stickers on the timing & clutch casings was enough to say "not for me"!

    I see this motorcycle stay being built in India because of cheap manufacturing & assembly costs & because the volume of sales won’t be that great. It will pull sales from RE, but it won’t kill it. People always want something different. Good luck BSA

      Given the high cost of sea-freight and the fact that the main component suppliers for this bike are Europe-based, logistically speaking, it would make sense to build it in Europe/UK, especially if the UK is initially the main intended market. As a rough rule-of-thumb, from a profitability perspective, every $10 saved at the back door (purchasing & manufacturing cost) equates to $100 at the front door (sales revenue), so this will be a serious consideration for them. Yes, Mahindra Group has deep pockets, but the BSA arm will still have to operate as an effective stand-alone profit-centre. I hope they succeed.

    Mmmmm. They changed the exhaust shield but I liked the full length one. The mid section shield looks weird. No change to the size/style of the radiator. Narrower and taller would look nicer but rectifiable. I'd still have one.

    I took one for a test ride today, I expected to be disappointed, and actually wasn’t!, it’s actually quite a good bike, it feels more powerful than it’s 45bhp, yes it’s a little slow off the line but over 30mph once you’ve got the weight moving it’s quite “stompy”, goes well, the handling is quite good unless you really hammer it into a corner at which point it wallow’s, mainly due to the overly soft rear suspension I’d say, you can feel the inertia in the large dia front wheel but that’s not a bad thing, the brakes felt a bit soft but were ok, the gear change is good apart from there being no hard stop on first which feels odd, the exhaust note is great when cruising, no nasty high frequency vibes, I’ve got a few bike’s from Fireblades to vintage machines, would I have one in my garage?, yes, all in all a machine that left me smiling.

    I like singles, I used to ride to school on a 350 Matchless, I learned on my Dad's 600 Norton, I had a 650 Panther for a while.
    But I learned that twins just offered easier, smoother power. My BSA, Triumph, AJS, Norton twins were quicker and didn't rattle my teeth.
    And with modern emissions dictating lean running motors I'll take a 650 twin over a 650 single any day.
    I've bought a RE 350 Classic for running around town (100mpg!) and can see a 650 Interceptor in my future.

    The original DBD 34 owed its success to three main factors: 1) strong, tractable engine, 2) low weight, well under 400 pounds, 3) superb, stable frame, close to the immortal featherbed. How does the new GS compare? Motor? Sounds good, if somewhat down on power. Weight? Here's the rub: Horribly overweight--470 pounds. No wonder handling is less than perfect. Frame? Compromised by the weight. Prediction: sports riders can "Potter around," but I suspect they will be disappointed by performance.

    People turn up their noses in some details but the reality is that the design of the bike is well conceived, the engine is not a truly classic style but it is a proven mono and that runs well however BSA still worked on the design and the way it releases the sound for a more classic style. There are only two classic bikes with a big thumper engine on the market, which is the one I bought the Mash Sixhundred and the BSA Goldstar, I think a comparison should be made between these two bikes instead of always comparing different things like the Interceptor 650. Personally I think that if the BSA Goldstar was already on the market it would be a motorcycle that I would consider because I wanted a classic single-cylinder but I happen to like it to be air-cooled like the one I bought but I have to admit that in design the most classic style of the Bsa is more beautiful👍.

    I am currently shopping for a good retro style motorcycle that's dependable and will last a long time. If the world does go crazy and starts making only EVs I will need something that will keep me from having to walk all the time.

      Get an Interceptor, you won't be disappointed. It's not retro, it's more like an old bike with some new tech sprinkled on it. I own Japanese and American bikes also, I can tell you my Interceptor is a keeper.

    Thanks John, excellent interview 👍. I think BSA might be right in considering an electric bike before any plans to introduce smaller capacity machines. The time frame for introducing new (or even modified) small IC motors is shrinking fast. I'll bet Mahindra are reserving the "Bantam" name for their first EV?

      R.E has a small oil radiator & a single is harder to make easy power but it is possible to do air cooled,oil cooled & I think KTM 690 is a air cooled single but not 100% sure.
      Water cooled is easier to make power & BSA use a Rotax engine not built there own.

      @@stillshakin2125 In NZ we call A2 learners license & bike can be no bigger than 660 & 54bhp & no headers or engine work just slip on's.
      It should be 54bhp regardless of cc then W800,883 Harley or R.E650 with headers are all below 54bhp it's silly really as a Triumph 660 LAMS (learner approved motorcycles)are 53bhp & alot faster than all of the above mentioned bikes with mods.

    I love the fact that the shocks don't have those hideous reservoirs like the Royal Enfield 650 twins have. I don't need or want top of the line suspension on a bike I would use as a cruiser. But they would have to support my 240 pounds. Where BSA really went wrong on this bike is using tube type tires. That one thing makes it virtually unusable. I have 2 bikes with tube type tires, a 1966 Triumph Bonneville and a 2013 Royal Enfield B5 Bullet, converted to an Amal carburetor and with a cat free aftermarket exhaust. Both are a blast to ride, but I won't go more than 50 miles from home on either one of them. Not only are tube type tires a LOT easier to puncture than tubeless tires, but with tube type tires, a flat means a tow truck. Unlike tubeless tires, there is no way to repair a flat beside the road. So I have to stay within the towing range of my roadside assistance plan. There is no reason why they had to use 1940s tires on this bike. Just look at a picture of a 1986/1987 Honda Rebel 450 wheel. It is a wire spoke wheel with tubeless tires. And unlike the way BMW does it, with the spokes attached to the very edge of the rim, the Honda design would look perfect on this bike, and make it possible to actually ride it somewhere.

      @@stevepalmer5670 Pretty much yeah. Tube type tires are a lot easier to puncture than tubeless tires, and when you have a flat with tube type tires, it means a tow truck. It can cost you hundreds of $$$ in towing charges. With a tubeless tire, IF you do have a flat, you can just plug it, reinflate it, and be on your way. A lot of times, with tubeless tires, the object that punctured the tire will also seal the puncture. I have found objects sticking in my tubeless tires while inspecting them at home that actually punctured the tire. But the tire did not go flat. I could have ridden hundreds of miles like that.

    The pre-production bikes must have been 'tuned' for you to get anywhere near 100 mph, the production ones seem to struggle to get to 85.

    Mmm not convinced, for the price the RE has got to be the better bet and no doubt RE will price going forward even more competitively. As for building these in the UK I doubt that it will ever happen, R&D yes to give it that UK feel and they may screw together some form of halo model in small numbers in the future. I’ll take the original one at the end.

    is somehow Triumph involved in the design of the BSA? After I paused the Video @12:13 I noticed that the swing arm, rear axle sliders (where you adjust the chain) the pillion and rider foot pegs and even the exhaust shield were it imitates the exhaust is one single piece, all look like the triumph street Twin series.

    Noticed that India isn't Ashish's top of mind as a market for BSA. Single cylinder watercooled. A possibility to be made in UK. They seem to be intentionally differentiating and taking a totally different route than RE.

    I’m probably going to buy a gold star. I’ve sold my Diavel and my wife’s monster. She wants a Enfield meteor. I’ll have a gold star. Shocks aren’t and problem but it would have been nice if there’d been a suspension upgrade option. Same with a performance top end and exhaust.

Why would lucas ever be involved with a new bike when the first thing you do is get rid of all the Lucas CRAP day on of a rebuild? Case in point...the Zena diode.... the positive ground system.... and how you went thru bulbs like nut's at a bar because of it.

    I'd have no issue with the Indian ownership and manufacture, they are rapidly reaching and exceeding world standards - but the 60's retro scene is highly saturated and I would love to see them making a more modern interpretation - aluminium frame, monoshock rear, upside down forks and so on.

    Nice to see another Nike in the sector although the BSA is more of a tribute bike obviously than having actually anything to do with BSA. Still that doesn’t matter to those oldies who will fawn over a big single or perhaps the hipsters who want another option for jaunts to the coffee shop. Given it is not actually an Indian market bike sold in western markets (as in the RE twins) it seems a bit of a weird choice to go with the quality and pricing choices they have made. I would have gone nearer triumph and made it more expensive but much higher quality frankly. The market for a big single is necessarily limited due to their significant limitations as an engine so you may as well get more from every sale. The western markets are the ones with the most focus in product quality rather than price

    I fell in love with the goldstar when I saw it and sat on it last year at the NEC... But I've kinda lost trust in bsa... They have repeatedly said things that haven't happened and the finished bike is not quality enough for the price or not cheap enough for the quality... As it stands, I'd pay a maximum of 6k for it... Or if I could see much better quality then I'd push 7k... As it stands, I'd rather have a used triumph or Z650RS for a similar or cheaper price....
