A gold medal in men's basketball at the Moscow Olympics would have been the perfect revenge for the travesty in Munich eight years earlier. Indeed, it was Sergei Belov who had the honor of igniting the cauldron at the opening ceremony in Moscow. Carter's boycott let that insult fly unanswered.
