Sort of. But I think they should provide clues that allude to some possibilities. Absolutely no information makes it kind of boring. For example, how The Borderlands (aka Final Prayer) explained things just enough, but left plenty of ambiguity.

@@iAmPimmiCue True. But sometimes for me, the unknown isn't scary because I don't know what it is I'm supposed to be scared of. If this creature was replaced with something realistic, like a salt water crocodile, it'd still be terrifying if not more so. Too bad no one's leaked a behind the scenes image of the vampire monk/Christopher Heyerdahl-looking thing in the light.

One thing that’s hard to miss is this monster’s behavior throughout the movie. It watches and stalks the crew not like a predator but some kind of serial killer, and the fact it collects eyeballs is incredibly disturbing. The lack of information is ultimately irrelevant in the face of its sadistic personality and actions.

@@Estelle2007 heavily disagreed honestly. Having literally no idea what it is that’s trying to kill you or why it’s trying to kill is way scarier than knowing. Anytime a horror creature gets a proper explanation, it immediately becomes less scary to me.

The whole "show the survivors talking about it" thing worked best with Band of Brothers because it wasnt the actors talking in the later shots, it was the real men who experienced it. They also didnt tell anyone who was talking until the very end of the show, letting you focus on the actors portrayal of them even more. But no one expects a found footage film to be as well thoughtout artistically as BoB was handled lol just an observation on that style of commentary

honestly as an Australian, if you know anything about aboriginal mythology, it actually does fit in quite well. The unknow creature that doesn't make much sense but does exist for a reason. It clearly takes inspiration from Australia and its culture, is very smart to use REALISTIC things that did happen in Sydney (including actually going to an actual conference with the prime minister at the time) it isn't amazing of course, but i do think its a good watch. I think it'd be a decent twist in a film to have the only survivor being interviewed as in this one, but by the end it's reveled that the unseen cameraperson was their identical twin, and the one actually being interviewed. That way the 'main character' could be killed off in the final moments, only to have the interviewee reference the fact that they had not only been siblings, but twins.

thanks to the team releasing this for free back in the day and making it very easy to get a hold of, this was one of the first horror movies i watched on my own. i think it worked especially well for that purpose since it remained in my head as a terrifying movie. rewatching it years later, i agree it could have done more but it still holds up surprisingly well, even if a little generic and flat now. the monster aspects are definitely the strongest. it's too bad it didn't go harder on things like character or add more mystery and suspense with the characters' fates but man the monster still holds up better than some today. that water scene really was terrifying.

So pumped to see this finally out!! Look, you’re right - it’s not the best made film, but it’s still heaps of fun and pretty frightening. I watched this for the first time a couple months ago with mates and we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.
As a Sydney-sider, I do have some things to say haha. It definitely emulates the late-night investigative specials we have on our TV (a lá 60 Minutes, mostly), which I think made it more immersive for me.
As for the spoiling of who dies/lives, we were quite convinced that Pete might still be alive because of the line “not everyone wanted to be apart of this interview”, which I though was pretty good misdirection. So his death at the end was a bit of a shock!
I wished they had done a bit more with the commentary aspect of things, especially because homelessness is such an issue in Sydney. Last year for our annual light/art festival (Vivid), they actually did a walk through of the abandoned Wynyard train tunnels, and this movie made me wonder if they pushed out any homeless for that project. Still pretty relevant today, I think.
The creature was some sort of thing from the deep ocean, I think, especially as the CBD is very close to the ocean. Honestly, whenever I watch any Aussie film with some supernatural, unspecified creature, my mind always goes to indigenous dreaming stories/legends.
Anyways, loved this video and I would be so keen for more Australian content on here, especially Snowtown! I think I’ve recommended this in a comment before, but if you’re looking for something a bit more close to home in the future, I absolutely loved The Cured!
Thank you for the incredible video!

Love or hate the film, it’s a gorgeous show of Sydney. I can’t think of any other movie that features the city like this does.

I actually learned about this film last year when I watched someone do a breakdown of REC and they mentioned it in passing. Now, I know this one fell kind of flat for Ryan, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. In point-of-fact, after watching it free on Tubi, I IMMEDIATELY went on the hunt for it and bought a special edition copy of it from Australia direct. (I'm American.) It now sits proudly in my collection and I recommend it often to fellow cinephiles.
Good movies should never be forgotten and should always be supported.

Absolutely love how they distributed and marketed this. Built a lot of buzz based off that, remember watching it for the first time and it was so well done and creepy.
Also you seem like you're having a lot of fun with this one Ryan, good to have you back!

I watched this movie years ago and constantly think about it. It wasn't GREAT, but it wasn't terrible imo. There's a lot of unanswered questions presented and the "creature" was underwhelming, but the trek down into and through the tunnels did make me anxious. Thanks for reminding me what it's called!

I saw The Tunnel last year while on a big found footage binge. Very pleasantly surprised by it. Effectively filmed with a nice simple premise, but not much more than that. And yeah it feels a bit like From Above So Below (a movie I quite like, actually), but with a more believable framing for as to why the cameras are on throughout the whole ordeal.

Pete could've survived but is left effectively catatonic due to the trauma and near death injuries. That's why they couldn't interview him since he's in a mental facility. It could also harken back to why the homeless man they interviewed earlier on had mental break.

I hope you can make a video some day on the british movie The Cottage (2008).
Its a great horror/comedy gangster movie that is also secretly a slasher movie.
And dispite the comedy being consistently funny throughout, it manages to get pretty messed up at times too...
finding a perfect balance between the two while always remaining very dark in its central theme.
Anyway its easily one of the most underatted british horror movies of the 2000s,
highly recommended too all, especially those who enjoyed the movie Dog Soldiers as its very similar in execution.

I enjoyed the movie. Not without its flaws, but still pretty cool.
And I don't have a problem with the fact that you know who survives and who dies. That is what would happen if this were real. And, for me, it added to the suspense. You keep wondering how did this guy die, and how did the others get out? And I especially like how in the end you still don't know what the monster was. All you know is it was big and vicious and it's still there.
    Cool movie

“The monster is not a metaphor”
Good. Then it’s a probably a good movie. Where the monster is just that, a monster. And the movie simply chronicles the encounters the main cast has with said monster. Not ANOTHER allegory or metaphor or message that has been retold over and over and over again. It’s simple and it works.

This is one of the reasons I rarely enjoy the first person narrative in horror. 90% of the time, it’s like “gee Im so surprised they survived” Im really terrified for the character telling me what already happened.

There are shows were they document tragic events, but they don't bring on the interview with the person in the most danger until they reach the point in the story where you find out if the person lived or died. They could've gone through the whole thing showing only 2 interviews and then brought on the surprise third person near the end.
