@@moxxibekk I don't think The Rental was offkilter. It was very straightforward and, at times, boring. Then everyone got killed by some rando. Just finished this and I found to be absolutely terrfying. We're so used to the idea that, in horror, the killer has to have some extended explanation of why they do what they do, or perhaps connection to one of the casts, that the fact that Spoilers (but you really shouldn't be reading the comments unless you want to be spoilers) We never get any explanation of who the killer is or what he looks like is scary because it comes out of nowhere. And that's life: you wake up, go to work, and you get hit by a car while crossing the street. There's no reason for it--you just die. We're not main characters. We're insignificant, and death could care less about our personal squabbles.
Thanks for covering this one! I remember it coming out and hardly anyone talking about it due to its unfortunate release date in the midst of the chaos known as the year 2020. And I really appreciate Mumblegore being discussed; the films in the category are definitely very hit and miss, but I appreciate there's still some bare-bones, low-budget horror that can do a good job at telling a story and giving the viewer some goosebumps along the way.
'disarming' is the exact right word to describe this film. when it changed to horror, I hardly even noticed. I enjoyed this film and your review was excellent as always. I hope you're well. 🥰
This movie was so good! It really did for me what The Strangers and the first Collector originally did. The not knowing 'why' makes it so much more chilling. I was also quite happy the Reggie was the lone survivor.
17:23 I think you got that wrong about it being a res herring. Taylor states that his unseen brother had a few dogs, and the dog doesn’t just show up at the end it goes up to the killer almost like he knows him. Most likely this is Taylors brother and he took the dog to mess with the group and also probably didn’t want it there during the night in case it barked to reveal him. Usually the dog always gets iced in a slasher movie so this was another subversion where the killer actually likes dogs and is also a subtle clue on his identity. Either why it wouldn’t make sense for Taylors house to be so cameraed up unless it was his brother than owned the house and could do things at his own pacd, which is what happened at the end with him buying a new apartment for airbnb
It's always interesting when films show us that to killer, all we are is bodycounts, they don't care who we are or what our story is.. All they see us as is another target

This and Barbarian were the first two films I watched this year and they made me never want to stay in an Airbnb ever again lol. That being said I went into The Rental with no expectations and thought it was unexpectedly very good!
I never want to stay in an Airbnb because the business model is destroying affordable home ownership opportunities. More power to horror movies that can lower Airbnb's power and reach, though. 😆

the fact we have no idea who the killer is is the scary part. we could assume it's taylor's brother but the movie pretty much implies he is jsut some random guy.
The setup reminds me extremely of "the open house" : focus on a family drama, a Holly day scenery and a strangeresque operating slasher killer who roams at the end to another location of the same type
Saw your video and immediately stopped at the spoiler warning and watched the movie. I found it very enjoyable and was hooked until the end. Also very beautiful in some scenes. So thanks for bringing this up 👌👌
I really liked this movie; it has one of the most brutally effective endings I've ever seen. An ending that basically saved the movie for me. It puts everything into context and is SO much more interesting than what the film lets on. Definitely underrated.
Watched this when coming back from overseas from a military trip. It was in the midst of the pandemic and had to quarantine for 2 weeks. Longest 2 weeks of my life but watching this movie and seeing it take place in my area where I grew up, Pacific NW. It felt good to see all the familiar sights even though in the context of a horror movie.
This video’s subject is somewhat appropriate for me because I specifically prefer using hotels compared to Airbnb. Despite never having had that much of a problem with them in the past, I’ve heard some genuine Airbnb horror stories, and just feel more comfortable in a hotel where there’s normally staff if a problem occurs and a little extra security for the room itself.
Since you ended with a “Psycho” reference I would love to see a video on your first impression of seeing the classic film and evaluate it’s cultural impact and impact on the horror genre.
Honestly I really enjoy this type of horror. It doesn't really revel in the gore and the killing as much as just showing the horror from the audiences own views. Like it puts a nugget of horror in your mind that sometimes you can't see death coming. Maybe you will just be going about your day and then something spontaneously bad happens.
I've never heard about this film before. So, instead of my usual "let's watch the video to see what it's all about and then I'll rent it if it sounds good", I think I might actually watch this one first. I'll be back for the rest of the video though!
I saw this film in theatre, and it was a wild ride. The difference between the first and secone half of the film is insane, both stylistic and storywise.
A strange movie, though good on its own terms. In line with what you said, it feels like a good relationship drama that Franco didn't know how to finish (which I'm sure wasn't the case) with an also very good (maybe even better) slasher film pasted in the end. 'Funny Games' comes to mind, watching this review, or even 'Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer'. The randomness, and the bleakness, feel like they're their own 'sub-genre' of horror films. Good review - thanks. :)
Challenge: You and your friend decided to have a great scary movie marathon. What three to four films and what order do you pick? I'll start off: [REC], the Descent, Insidious, 28 Days Later.
I just wanna let you know that I trust your taste in films so much. After less than a minute into this video, I went and watched the movie. 👍🏾 And then I came right back to hear your commentary, of course. 😅
Inever really 'got' home invasion movies. Like, what's the point? People are victims of random violence? Yeah, that's real life. I don't need a film for that.
I have mixed feelings about this movie and I actually wish it would have stuck with the messy drama/thriller portion rather than abruptly switching to a slasher in the last third. Even though the characters were unlikeable, I still cared a lot about how their drama kept building up. I really wanted to see how their established back stories and insecurities would come full circle and I was hoping for a different kind of s***storm. I'm talking about lots of crying, spilling secrets and really testing both platonic and romantic relationships in a "cabin in the woods" setting. But all in all it was just alright for me. Some of the acting was a bit awkward but the chemistry between the actors was believable and the "bro-_" dialogue was funny and cute.
I don't think I can show up for a horror movie and sit through an entire hour of relationship drama first. I've sat through that bait and switch so many times, and it's too frustrating. And usually incredibly slow.
"...because it's not hard to just not fuck someone who's not your partner..." My comment has nothing to do with the movie, I just wanted to point this quote out because it is so true. I never have and never will understand people's inability to just say 'no'. Brains do not turn off, regardless of what the jokes and myths would have you believe.
I’m excited whenever something from dan Stevens horror work gets brought up. If you haven’t done videos on the guest and apostle I hope you get to those too
Finally got around to it, absolutely loved it! Glad i didn't watch your whole vid when it came out or it really wouldve spoilt it. Similar vibe to the strangers for sure
John Swanberg sounds a filmmaker to check. I saw him as an actor in a good Lovecraftian film - "Offseason". His role was incosnicuous at first but became more important as the movies went on. He was good and his spare acting scenes were maximized
I'm way behind on finally watching this episode and seeing this movie, but damn that was incredible. Thank you, Ryan. I may never have seen this otherwise.
Thanks to your positivity in the first couple of minutes of this video, I decided to pause it at found it a day before it disappeared from Netflix. Wow. Just, wow. Sometimes no rhyme, no reason, no arcs, and no real ending are really not such a good thing. Subversion just for the sake of subversion with no reason and nothing to show for it is just a waste of time, mostly for the audience. Anyone out there who liked it, god bless; I’m glad someone pried some entertainment from it. Watching five borderline unlikeable characters die sudden, unlikeable deaths at the hands of an unidentified unlikeable nobody could have been a 30 minute short on UA-cam. An unlikeable short, sure, but it would have gone down easier at least. I mean, my girlfriend slept on the couch that night, she was so pissed that I put it on. You owe me Hollinger. P.S. The dog not dying was cool, but you still owe me.
When subversion is done well, it has a reason. This movie just felt like "have your cake and eat it, too" the cliff scene is great though lmao BYE GURL
Yes, a RH upload is like Halloween and Xmas rolled into one 😊😊 Edit: love the actor whom plays the owner, Taylor (forget his name) im rewatching Carnivale atm in which he's awesomely understated and misunderstood.
It's very rare that I watch a movie BEFORE Ryan Hollinger makes a video about it. The last time that happened was with Prom Night. Sadly, I remember not really caring for this movie at all. I don't really know why. It just didn't click with me.
I recently watched a film called _Barbarians_ (plural!) from around the same time, which had a very similar setting and structure, and I found myself invested but ultimately disappointed by it. _The Rental_ seems like the good version of this idea, so I’m probably going to check it out sometime. Thank you for spotlighting it, Ryan!
I’m a total horror hound, but this one freaked me out so much I couldn’t finish it. I’m fine with most Body Horror, gore, and supernatural horror. It is well crafted thrillers that get to me.
This movie was terrible in my opinion, for many reasons. Number 1, their behavior was completely unbelievable. Virtually no one would behave like that given the curcumstances. Secondly the subtle and not so subtle agenda pushing was obnoxious. Finally it wasn't scary in the slightest. To me there is nothing underrated about it. It deserves to be forgotten.
Do you think the killer adopted the dog? That would be sweet. They should have a scene of the dog sitting next to the killer on the sofa, watching the footage.
I loved the last 20 mins of film, but all the discourse before that felt like it took up too much time. The hidden cameras were genuinely terrifying, but I was hoping for the characters to all be home together when the killer attacked. I was really rooting for the final girl too.
I remember this getting rather poo-pooed when it first dropped and I took the hate on face value only to come back to it a few years later and loving it. I think it was my bias against the Franco's in general and my bias against most Netflix originals that made me dismiss it off-hand, as I don't usually let online consensus sway me. Sometimes the slow burn mumblecore approach is trite and annoying. Other times it's pitched to perfection. The Rental got it right. A tightly wound little thriller than knew how to deliver.
This film is sooooo underrated!!! I swear if people didn't know it was directed by Dave Franco it would've been a bigger deal. They were biased just based on his name alone.

The sound track is perfect for this movie, I couldn’t imagine it without it
I have mixed feelings about this movie and I actually wish it would have stuck with the messy drama/thriller portion rather than abruptly switching to a slasher in the last third.
"...because it's not hard to just not fuck someone who's not your partner..."
My comment has nothing to do with the movie, I just wanted to point this quote out because it is so true. I never have and never will understand people's inability to just say 'no'. Brains do not turn off, regardless of what the jokes and myths would have you believe.
Right on, I totally agree.
They were drunk and high on molly and ecstasy to be fair but yeah
I’m excited whenever something from dan Stevens horror work gets brought up. If you haven’t done videos on the guest and apostle I hope you get to those too
I was so happy to see the insert of Frances Ha. It's one of my favorite movies and I rewatch it all the time.
Recently watched this for the first time and really enjoyed it. Want to see more like this from Franco.
Thanks for the new content brother! Much love to u still after all these years. You still give me amazing horror vibes and content. Thank you.
All Airbnbs have the potential to be the most disturbing
Adding this to my must watch horror films list! I can't wait to share it with my family, thanks!
Finally got around to it, absolutely loved it! Glad i didn't watch your whole vid when it came out or it really wouldve spoilt it. Similar vibe to the strangers for sure
Loving the channel. Going to add this to my October "31 Days of Horror" watchlist.
Good movie but it's still a screenwriting crime to kill Alison Brie (yes yes, I've seen Scream 4 too)
Also someone cheating on alison brie. Just not believable
Love that you give these movies exposure. Too many people write these off
Thanks to your positivity in the first couple of minutes of this video, I decided to pause it at found it a day before it disappeared from Netflix. Wow.
I’m so glad somebody is covering this finally!!!
I like ur new thumbnail templates, very clean
I'm about to sleep so this might not be the best video to watch and listen to hoyever I can't miss out on a new upload.
This sounds great, you always have the best recommendations
Paused and went to watch. Wonderful essay, as always!
Yes, a RH upload is like Halloween and Xmas rolled into one 😊😊
Edit: love the actor whom plays the owner, Taylor (forget his name) im rewatching Carnivale atm in which he's awesomely understated and misunderstood.
This movie is a disquieting reminder that the only reason we are safe is simply because there aren't too many psychos in the world
It's very rare that I watch a movie BEFORE Ryan Hollinger makes a video about it.
And on top of it all they were charged an exorbitant cleaning fee.
Do consider taking a look at Black Mountain Side, it deserves more attention!
But Dave is such a cool dude! ☹️
