  • Come take a tour of my small woodworking shop & layout and see what's changed in the last 1.5 years! My small shop is 11X20 and is located in the third bay of my garage. I do all of my woodworking in this shop and in this tour, I explain all of my woodworking tools, equipment, and shop furniture. If you have a small workshop and are trying to optimize your layout or space, take a look and see what ideas you can add to your shop. Also, let me know if you have any ideas of things that I should add to my shop layout in the comments!

    I am an engineer by day and a woodworker by night... usually after the kids are in bed and before the neighbors call the cops!
    I have a passion for building things out of wood and all things woodworking. I am always looking for new projects that look fun and challenging. My woodworking inspiration comes from my kids, my wife, and the forests around my house. I consider myself a serious hobbyist and I hope you can learn something and get inspired from the projects and mistakes that I make. I will also show you how I organize and work in my small shop in 1 bay of my garage. I will share videos of my past, current, and future woodworking projects with the goal of getting you out in the shop making sawdust!

    Dude! That’s an amazing amount of potential in a limited space. Very impressive! Only feedback I have is I didn’t see a fire extinguisher anywhere. That’s $40 that could save your whole house. A nice touch on the dovetail doorframe would be a piece of diamondplate on the door. Great space--hope you get many years of wood therapy in there.

    You've put together a great small shop. If you can't store sheet goods flat, your swing out system is the way to go. It is especially elegant for the space between the garage door track and the wall. Though I have a huge machine room, if I was starting again, I'd french cleat all the wall space except the cantilever lumber storage. Then even the art and memorabilia could float around to where it fit best at the moment. 3/4 or even 1/2 ply makes economical french cleat material over conventional stud spacing.

      @@EveningWoodworker How does your dust collector work for you?
      Setting up my new shop id love to have a rock solid system to handle any dust since its only a 2 car garage and my wife will be parking in the other side.
      The Oneida SuperCell seems like the most ideal one but dang, I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger on that price tag.

  • @emmgeevideo

    Very inspirational. My situation is that I have a two-car garage and two cars…. I have a small room off of the garage I call my workshop with a bench and shelves. No space for table saw, etc. So I have my contractor saw on a fold-up cart that I can push to the side. I have a Kreg ACS and track that folds up and goes into a closet. I have a Kreg 2 x 4 fold-up worktable that I hoist up high with a pulley hoist made for bicycles. I have a dust collector cart with cyclone separator that scoots into the side away from the car. My concept is that on the weekend I can unfold everything, kind of like setting up a campsite, use my tools, and then fold everything up and put it away. I’ll look at your shop for ideas about how to use my wall space and ceiling space. I would like to see more woodworkers like me show off how they fit their workshop AND cars into their garage.

    Very nice! I work out of my disconnected garage so as you can imagine it’s tight and not temperature controlled. I do most of the work on a mobile workbench that has the miter saw and table saw integrated along with lots of features. It’s a mobile shop. But that only works on the fair weather days. So I’m building a shop in my basement which means lots of dust collection. But I do love miter station you built. So I’m copying that from you if you don’t mind

    Man, I thought I squeezed alot into my shop. I gotta do a video soon on a shop tour, probably after I build my next 2 main tables.
    Deff inspired me to get a mortiser though...
    I am including a onefinity journeyman CNC (it's their biggest model) in my shop, but it's very difficult to fit in. SO, I decided I'm going to build a MASSIVE outfeed table, put hinges and shocks on the table top, and make it lift like a car hood. Then I'll put the CNC underneath the outfeed table.
    As far as dust collection goes. I have the same harbor freight 1. Here's some awesome things you can do. You can run it in 220 mode, which isn't a big deal as is, but that enables you to put a bigger Impeller inside, getting super powerful dust collection. Another thing you can do, is mount the motor on the wall, then put a cyclone below it (I use Oneida), it takes up less floor space this way. Then pipe the exhaust directly outside the shop. The cyclone cat he's 99% of the dust, as long as it's not filled. The benefit of this is you don't need to run a filter, this means no restrictions on the exhaust, boosting performance on the dust collector, big time, also reduced maintenance, and less consumables like bags.

    • @EveningWoodworker
      @EveningWoodworker  2 роки тому

      Great tips! I may use some of those ideas when I get around to my dust collector update...

    Fantastic! I love your router table so this design is incredibly efficient. I gotta say if my husband made me take 1 x car garage space as my workshop vs the double….I’d be swapping those over quick smart. Build a carport if you want to keep snow off yr cars a workshop is an everyday necessity man. And nobody needs that many xmas decorations. The food storage can go into stackable bins in the double car garage. I love the reversible table when I get my thickneser I’ll be using this idea. How do you change yr angles on yr compound saw with the dust cover??/ do you remove it for those times?

    • @EveningWoodworker
      @EveningWoodworker  2 роки тому +1

      I can do at least a 45 in both directions but don't usually do a lot of compound cuts on the miter saw. If I need to, I can take the cover off.

    Replace the top of that HF dust collector with a Powertec filter, and then loosely drape a large clear plastic bag over it to prevent dust from piling up on the filter. I used the plastic that my drum sander came in. It is a game changer and the powertec filter is DRASTICALLY better than the stock HF one. $30 on Amazon. You won’t see that cloud of dust every time you turn the thing on.

    Amazing.what can I say.I am envious being in the UK.I know in US there is the luxury of space which is scarce in UK.Perhaps you should do another video for beginners to design a work space around
    Clamps
    Wood storage
    Dust collector
    Mitre saw on stand
    Zig saw
    Circular saw
    Mobile table saw
    Router.
    Work bench.
    Is it possible to have these in 10 feet x four feet ?
    I want to build a work shed around these tools.I am a beginner and hobby woodworker.

    It just shows me that I can make great use of the size and what I can put and where is best to make great use of the space!!! As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

    Say there evening w .w. got an idea to run by you when you build walls around your hot tank use 2"x2" an 1/2" ply on them an put Hinges on the corners with drive out pins if you have to work on it to change a element , just drive out the Hing pins an set each side on the floor.--you can even paint it an no taking out the screws to get it apart.---just an Idea for you--- ha ha ha

    Do you have the tables/benches leveled? My garage is sloped both towards the center and towards the door or does it not matter as long as the surface is flat/in plane with the work piece?

    • @EveningWoodworker

      Most garage are sloped towards the door, but I don't find that not having them exactly level is a problem. Just in plane with each other is sufficient

      I have a cheap dust collector from harbor freight and especially on this planer, there's plenty of force blowing the chips out so a cheap one can work fine.

    Man I love your shop. Unfortunately I am rebuilding my house so I don’t have time to build a shop right now. I will be missing a walk when I build my shop because I have a two car garage and going to use half of it for the shop and the other half for my car. I do have a question. I was thinking about making a bench along my wall and inserting my tools into it so that I have out feed and in feed with every tool. Some of them would be removable in case I needed them elsewhere and some on a flip table. Is there a reason people don’t do it this way? I ask because I have not found anyone doing it this way and you didn’t do it.

    • @EveningWoodworker
      @EveningWoodworker  2 роки тому

      That sounds like it could be an innovative solution, but I'm trying to imagine exactly how it would work. The challenge with having all of the tools inserted into the work bench is that it may not give you much workbench to actually work on. Depending on the size of your projects it may be doable, but I often have my workbench full and then need to go use a tool to trim or modify something. Something to think about, but not necessarily a deal-breaker- good luck!

    • @shaynesabala
      @shaynesabala 2 роки тому

      @@EveningWoodworker I have thought of that. My answer is flip tops. This way I will have the entire bench open. But I'm open to any feedback, good or bad.

    • @shaynesabala
      @shaynesabala 2 роки тому

      @@EveningWoodworker I wasn’t clear with my answer. What I meant is that I will have a flip top for my machines and have an insert that covers the hole. The only thing I haven’t figured out yet is how to lower the machine a little so that the insert will fit. I haven’t given it a lot of thought but there is always a way and I’ll figure it out.
