- So many people have left comments asking for a tour of my small 9.5 x 9.5 wood shop, so here it is! This is my SUPER small woodworking shop tour. Two years ago I moved my shop from a two car garage to my current 6 by 8 closet. One thing I did that is pretty unique is use of pulleys. My little bandsaw and a few shelves live on the ceiling and can be lowered in seconds then clamped where i need it.

Thanks super handy for another beginner trying to figure out workflow in a small space! Like you suggest, it looks like you have a lot of vertical space on the wall left to play with still, good to minimize tabletops (and stuff on them) taking up the most valuable floor space.

Thank you for sharing! Great job dealing with your limited, but cosey space. Regarding your side table issue, I imagine resizing the current cabinet/old router table, or building a new one that will roll up under the table saw. Give it drawers that pull out. Or course, you’ll have to include a channel to clear the router. But, if you could put a small slide out surface on the top that could pull out to act like your current surface, it could slide back in under the router table extension when you need to stand there. Or, you could have a piece of wood that could sit on top of a pulled out drawer. This would be an alternative to the fold down table idea, which is a good one too.
Separate from the above, I would use some scrap 1/4” plywood and cover up the insulation. Exposed, it’s a dust magnet, and not good for your lungs. Thanks again!

This is actually great. I just bought a new house and it has a double car garage. BUT, I like to do my own car work and then on top of kids toys and random junk my wife likes to throw in there, doing wood working in there is really not a feasible possibility and I’m now looking into buying a smaller shed or something to turn into a woodworking shop. This is great inspiration

My shop has been neglected for over ten years, and I have been slowly getting back to using it, but it is VERY cluttered. I am watching many small shop videos to get ideas on re-arranging mine and liked yours.

You have made some good use of the space, I would love to have that size workshop I'm currently working in 11ft by 5ft which means I rely on being able to work outside alot and have to disassemble my router table after every use, I have managed to get dust collection with a cyclone which has made my wife happy, I find that if everything has a deffinate home I can keep my worktops clear. I may get a compact dewalt table saw in the future and make that into a portable trolley with built in dust collection and some flaps that fold out into an outfield table.

I'm using the TS 3650 and have been contemplating making a custom movable base that will support the weight better, include storage and incorporate dust storage. I would go that route for your set up and then do a folding table on the wall that can give you better access to the router lift.

You could pull your workbench away from the saw if you have a project on it. Adding a roller as an outfeed for these occasions could help.

I’ve been doing this for a long time and the main advice I can give you is DO NOT GLUE any shop cabinets/furniture. Shops and ideas change and all that wood can be reused as you refine your needs. I have plywood that has been used from the first cabinets I built in new designs that work for me today.
That’s actually a great tip! I’ve been using glue and brads for speed lately, but I’ve also reused some old shop furniture that was screwed together. Thanks!
Concerning the accessories you keep handy on top of the table you said blocks your free access to your router table, maybe you can equip the rest of wall area where you are storing your saw blades with some hangers for those accessories. They would be out of the way, but still very handy. Just a thought. Thanks for your video. I am encouraged to see you able to work in such a small space.

I'm just starting myself, my suggestion to you is the cabinet next to table saw/router build a new one. Put it on wheels so it can tuck under your router , but put your planner in the box.
Then in your sander cabinet you can add more drawers to store loose items.

Makes my 12’x16’ shed with a 12’ to 10’ lid seem HUGE! Lol.

😂 you got it good! I think it doesn’t matter what dimension our shops are: they’re never quite big enough.
My shop is 11x21 and as others have mentioned I have put every tool and bench on casters so they can be moved around. A few things are stationary like the big tool box and one bench is attached to the wall. I will suggest that you could utilize your wall-space better for tool or jig/fixture storage.all of my walls are covered in French cleats. Also consider a rack mounted to the ceiling to store larger wood.
I built a flip top for a Dewalt planer and a spindle sander and it is on wheels so it is real easy to roll into the right spot to use and return to its storage spot when finished.
Great points! My cart with the spindle sander was originally going to be a flip-top cart until I realized it would be challenging to pull away from the wall and flip in such a small space.
I like this set up. I have a 2 car garage. My wife parks her van in there. 4 wheelers, bikes and all kinds of other crap. I am completely disorganized. Gotta get my crap together. Thanks for this.

Take look at Andrew Klein’s “Out-feed table like no other “ video. Not cheap (but I’d Love to see more versions before I try it 😉). I’d cover the insulation ASAP , I found it to be a saw dust magnet and if(when) I hit it with a board or something, I’d see strands of fiberglass in the air😬😷
I’m really liking the Match fit clamps and putting dovetail groves in more areas on table tops and sides.
I’ll check out that out feed table video. Haha.
I’m actually running into the city tomorrow and picking up some hardboard to cover the insulation. Thanks for the reminder to get on that!
vice idea for your small table - add some t-track along the edge and use guide rail clamps in it - makes for a vice as large as the t-track is long and once the guide rail clamps are out of the way it's pretty unobtrusive.

Great storage ideas. My workshop in 10 feet wide, and 6 feet deep, and the free floor space is 4 by 3. I have a table saw, desk planer, mitre saw, scroll saw and all the usual sanders and clamps etc. I can only do big projects when it’s dry as I have to use my back yard as overflow. I’d love a shop as big as yours. Thanks again for some ideas though.

@@windfirewoodwork some are out, some have to be stored. It’s a constant game of jenga. Am shifting and redesigning the shop this weekend to increase worktop space. Thanks for the video again.
I too have a tiny shop, about twice the size of yours buy I have far more stuff jammed into it. Under the router table wing on my saw is a Performax drum sander on rollers. You could mount your planer on rollers and put it under there. If you recreate the catch-all table in the corner you could make it at the same level as the router table and it might serve as an additional support, but OTOH you would have to keep it clean. One of the best things I did was put a closet on the exterior of my shop and put my dust collector and air compressor out there. Freed up some space and much quieter. I visited a shop about the size of yours many years ago and that guy had cut several holes in the walls with little doors. He could open a door and feed a board he was ripping through it.

Think wheels, think furniture dolly ( Harbor freight, watch for sales, you can’t even buy casters separately for the cost) think swing out arms with/ for tools, lights, supplies, or parts layout organization, when you no longer need that particular item , just swing it back to the wall or ceiling, or under the bench, and move on, like your shop, I have one those itty bitty shops, I find it fun and challenging to use it. Great use of space overall. I love small shops. They force you to be a better woodworker as you have to deal with the mental and physical gymnastics of working in a confined space. My shop is a 12x20' garage and I'm still optimizing things years after originally setting things up. I think the biggest shop I'd ever want is a two car garage.
For your table saw cabinet, I'd make shallow shelves on the back wall where your blades are, and also make some narrow shelving to the right of the table saw for the router bits and accessories.
I really wouldn't call french cleats contested; it's an excellent system that's easily customizable and very strong. Not many downsides to it really.
One thing I learned working in my shop, purge unused items and unnecessary things like scraps that you think you'll use, but haven't in years. You'd be surprised at how much space you regain.

at vert least, turn your saw blade storage unit horizontally on the wall, higher up so teeth are not so near your head when you work at router

Greetings Thanks for sharing Your Work Shop. You really have it well organized for a smaller space. A suggestion for what it’s worth, the small table that you have next to your tablesaw with your tablesaw accessories that you mentioned was convenient but in the way when you’re using your router. I noticed that you do have studs that are exposed not sure if they are exposed in the wall to the right of your table-saw face? maybe recess a small nook between the studs to incorporate your accessories behind you your table-saw..Just a suggestion.. Looking forward to fall along make it a great day! 😎
Thanks for your comment. Your idea is solid; I just need to be wary of losing insulation value in the wall...Oct-April can get really cold here in Alberta!

I really enjoyed your presentation here! However I have to say that the slow classical music styling in the background can clash with your upbeat explanations. My suggestion would be to have more upbeat music to match quieter in the background.

Thought my little 12'x16' shed was small...I do have everything on wheels and keep things against the wall as much as possible. It does provide me room to roll my job site Dewalt table saw out and use in the middle space, but in nice weather it goes outside for sawing. I am thinking of making a small deck outside the front double doors so I can roll my saw or whatever outside and use them in good weather, or maybe even put a roof over it and use it in foul weather, maybe by hanging some removable tarps for walls. As far as the flip cart, I have one, I like it, but I see your point and agree with your decision not to make it a flipper.
Wheels are definitely the secret sauce for a small space. When I had a Skil jobsite table saw, I also had everything against the walls and sometimes would bring it outside. But, in Alberta, it gets too cold for too long to rely on working outside. My current tablesaw ends up as a bit of a workbench extension when needed, so it balances out. Cheers!
Build the cabinet under the table saw and have a flip up table top in the old router table location.

I work in a small space and am very familiar with having to move a project to work on a different part. I also work on multiple projects at a time, so being able to easily switch them out is important. For your space, I would find a way to add shelves above your saw table, either hanging from the ceiling or supported by the wood studs (maybe eye or just above head height). You still have to move things out of the way to use the saw, but you can then move things or projects in progress off your workspace. Actually, if you could make it so it could be raised or lowered if you need extra height, that would be ideal.

You could make that shelf extra functional by adding lighting and a gooseneck magnification glass.
Organization? Crap that looks like mine, just wherever it will fit. I do wish I had the dedicated space so I could leave tools set up between sessions. Keep up the good work.

Never walked into them, but I did end up moving them.
Did you make your table saw fence yourself? and did you record that, because I'm in a similar work space and planning to rearrange to make for better access to all my tools.
If you mean the aluminum table saw fence, that’s the stock one for the Ridgid TS3650.

Have you seen someone use a 40ft shipping container for a workshop...?. Possible you reckon?
I don’t see why you couldn’t. My only concern would be your width: can you get past your tools to work at the others? Otherwise, the length would make for a great shop!
Shop clutter kills work space. If I start to clutter up the shop I pickup one item and don’t put it down until I have a definite spot for it or I get rid of it. Then pick up another until the piles is gone.

Re-make that cabinet so t fits under the router. Install one or more folding shelves on the wall under your saw blades. That will give you a convenient place to put your saw accessories and fold the shelves to move to the router, roll the saw out will give you more access to the router table. I have a contractor saw with a cabinet replacing the original legs. All of my blades, dados, saw related tools, router bits and feather boards are in drawers. The 1/2” router barely clears the cabinet at its lowest position, using a Router Raizer to lift the router. No wasted space around my table saw. My tenon gig and miter bar lives on the cabinet on the opposite side from the router.

I have a Micro shop, With my onefinity in it i have like no room. its like 8 x 12... have a jointer, table saw, thickness planer I'm trying to make it more usable, .... until i build my actual shop. thanks, for the ides

@@windfirewoodwork I love it, in the beginning there was this really misleading thought in my head that I would get it and would just crank out beautiful things with the push of a button, lol, what a noob i was. After learning the ins and outs its really been a great addition to my woodworking. The CAD part is a little hard to figure out but once you get there the CAM is easy enough, got one?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 i hope i didnt offend you by say the micro word? as it goes my shed is a nano slither bigger as its 12x8. As for how a workshop should be set out really comes down to how you use your space, myself i keep moving things around. The only thing i would suggest is to try and keep all work units/ tables mobile as it helps in a small space. And as for tools i dont buy into must have tools and buy only what i need and can afford, as time goes by you will upgrade your tools and others will collect dust and be sold as not used as thought.
No offence at all, haha. I agree about everything constantly moving around. Nearly everything in my (micro-shop 😆) is on casters or French cleats so I can do just that.
I put a tray for the table saw accessories no the left side wall of the saw where your serial number pad is located. It holds nearly all the things you have on the shelf surface of the cabinet you have in the corner. Wasted space if you don’t use it as it’s under the saw….

"Recreate" your love/hate, original router table under the end of the tablesaw/new router table but put a slide out table top that connects to the opposite wall for stability. This would give you the table top "catch all" you love when you need it but when you need to get close to the router table to work comfortably you can clear it off and slide it out of the way.
