- My new favorite ham radio app is RadioMail. Since I always have my iPhone on me, I can take a small radio pouch and retrieve my Winlink emails on the go! Great job!
RadioMail is in the App Store: apps.apple.com/app/id1613839993

I'd love to see the conversation between handheld and station on an SDR waterfall + some explanation as to what's happening :)
I've been an android user for a very long time and was recently thinking about switching to an iPhone, this almost seals the deal for me.
Thank you for the step by step instructions. I found it very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Just got into digital text / email a few months ago. Having a bit of learning curve but I'm not going to give up. Wish me luck. You really do have some Great videos. 73s
How did I not find this app a while ago, definitely downloading to my phone! (As soon as I’m done watching this video of course!)
I used the early version on my mac. It is much more user-friendly than other options, and it runs on IOS and OSX. Cool.
Great video as always Mr Josh! Glad to even see someone sending you a winlink email saying how much they like the podcast! Great taste! Well explained video, although I don't have any Apple devices, I am sure this app will be valued by so many hams, simply setup, and intuitive! Greeting from Southern Vermont!
Nice video. I have been using RadioMail with my TH-D74 and a small pico board (TinyPICO) that I flashed with a bluetooth classic to btle translator. Totally worth it.
This sounds interesting! I've been searching but can't seem to find what you're using; do you have some good search terms or a link?
Thanks for the video, amazing.
Hey Josh. Great video as always. I would appreciate if you could give a hint on how to use vx-6 with direwolf.
Thank you for introducing me to this wonderful hobby. Greetings from Melbourne.
Yes Josh! This info is awesome, as I am an Apple user. I bought a Surface Go2 specifically to use Winlink. Will be nice to pair down devices and gear I carry. I may have missed it and/or am not very experienced with this stuff. I can use this app with my iPhone and my 705 and use HF to send and receive my emails? Thanks again!! 73
I can just imagine someone coming up to you in the parking lot and asking, "Hey, what's with the radio?" "Oh, I am just checking my emails." "But you have a phone right there?!" "What if I suddenly had no cell service or wifi, I could still get my emails!" "Really? How?" "Have you heard of ham radio?"
This is likely to happen at any time with me.
🤣🤣🤣
That always happens 😂
BOOM💥 there it is!!
The only issue I see using that method is that mail you've sent and received will not be available anywhere else but on the iPhone. I have my Winmail and all connections via soundmodem and direwolf on a USB Flashdrive that I can use on any laptop. I'll have to research if there's anyway to "migrate" the emails off the iPhone and onto my flashdrive.
I live in the Northwest and WinLink using VHF seems unlikely after a large earthquake. Can you demonstrate it using HF to maybe the Central US or Canada? HF makes it a useful tool. Thanks.
$15 app - I wish there was a light version to figure out if this will work for your needs
Dont forget to mention its $15 in the app store. Small price to pay to support an updated technology in our hobby.
Hey Josh - Big fan op name also Josh :)
Wondering, does the THD75A change any of the need for the TNC3? i know the kenwood has bluetooth i just don’t have my hands on mine yet to do any testing
Thanks
I have a Xiegu g90 Radio connected to Winlink on my laptop and I can’t get it to work because I don’t know what to type for host it’s not working unfortunately
Will the digirig work with the iphone?
How do I show the frequencies of an old radio to the phone screen? That is, from a manual radio control to the phone screen, the wave frequency appears in the form of a number.
FYI, the Mobilinked TNC4 will be coming out soon! (Get on their email list!)
where did you read about this?
I’m having a difficult time figuring out what I should put for host for VARA HF setting in Radio Mail.
You’d put your computer on the same network running Vara.
Cam you do ipad to TNC to IC-705??
I watched the whole video out of curiosity but just can get myself to ever buy iDevil products.😂👍
What in the world was that big eye poker on your Yaesu VX6R? That was no Signal Stick!!!!
Thanks for a great intro, Josh! Any possibility that RadioMail can be used with Raspberry Pi in lieu of Mobilinkd?
Yes, you can run Direwolf as a packet software TNC and connect via WiFi. Direwolf also implements the auto-discovery protocol, so RadioMail will detect its IP automatically.
Got all excited about this until I realized I can't do it. My TNC2 does not have the capabilities. I wish they could somehow update the firmware to make it happen. I really don't want to buy another TNC from them.
I have a Yaesu FT-5D and would like to access Winlink email when no internet is available. Should I use Digirig or Mobilinkd? Which is more beneficial with the FT-5D?
You ever figure this one out? I'm wondering the same
@@DSD Yea, I use the Mobilinkd. It works good.
I'm new to this, so go easy on me 😉... but why can't the TNC functionality be incorporated into the Radiomail app?
For AX.25 packet mode, TNC like mobilinkd is responsible for HDLC framing and AFSK modulation/demodulation, which in theory could be done in the iPhone, similar to how soundmodem and direwolf accomplish that. However, the PTT control is the key missing piece. Without it the iPhone would have to rely on the VOX feature of the radio, which is not going to perform well for session oriented packet mode like Winlink. Until more radio expose their audio and CAT control over BLE or WiFi, some interfacing hardware is necessary.
@@islandmagicco Thanks for the explanation
@@islandmagicco is there a workaround to send standard forms, such as attachments of downloaded forms. This is critical for ARES. Thank you.
I have never used radio mail. I'm a bit behind in technology. 😐 I hav
Josh. Have you tried to use this via Bluetooth with the Kenwood D74? If it works, I’ll spend the money on this app. $15 seems a bit steep if it doesn’t work with the D74.
D74 won’t interface with the phone. It’s not BLE.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse What about with the ID-52?
Does the app keep a local download of the Winlink stations so that you can still use it as reference if you don't have cell service?
Yes, the station directory and all your favorites are cached in a local database. It's refreshed once a day or on demand if necessary.
@@islandmagicco thanks!
Josh. Do you know if it works with a Kenwood D72? And, could you directly connect it with an iPhone or iPad?
The iPhone and iPad support ble. Which the 72 and 74 does not support.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse The 74 can be made to do it, but you have to use a TinyPICO with an image that converts the btle to classic bluetooth. That's how I'm doing it.
Is there an Android alternative to the radio mail app? I'm not seeing anything in the store
There is WoAD, but it doesn't seem as polished as this app.
Use WoAD for android. 👍
hows it encrypted; is it like, your phone has a key and the winlink has a key?
It’s not natively encrypted.
كيف أظهر ترددات الراديو القديم لشاشة الهاتف؟ أي، من التحكم اليدوي في الراديو إلى شاشة الهاتف، يظهر تردد الموجة في شكل رقم.
Guys does this work without a phone SIM card❓ If so that'd be fricking awesome 💯
No. It doesn’t. We don’t want to either. 🤷🏼♀️
Could I use a G90 and digirig for this?
Not really. U less you wanted to use a laptop or windows tablet.
Radio mail is not finding my mobilinkd TNC. It is connected to my phone any ideas?
Disconnect from the phone. Make sure only Radio Mail is the one connecting.
That did it! Thank you
Can you do this via iPad and or MacBook?
iPad yes, unsure on MacBook.
Apple silicon Macs are not supported at the moment.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse thank you, will have to do some research as I’m committed to the apple environment 🥴
I am looking for about your product place lace me a message. When I post this , I am looking for more Information on this . Honey I can get that on my phone and how I can do that to my ham radio
Disappointed that it doesn’t have any inbuilt sound modes think I will pass on this app
Hi Josh, what is your callsign ??...David VK4DJC.
Josh, I love your videos because they are like your version of the encyclopedia or google; when you air something, I may not be in to it then with you. Later, when I want to know I can look it up in your library and find success. Thanks! 73 de K0WHW @Bill-HRT
Thanks Bill. That’s quite a compliment!
