Hey quick question. Have you heard anything from Austin lately? I ordered one of these 2 months ago and he completely stopped responding to my emails about a month ago. The new website looks great, but even when I tried to reach out there I received an automated response saying that they would respond in 3 days and that was two weeks ago. I know that you aren’t responsible or associated with his company, but I’m hoping that you can help or at least be aware that he’s taking money then ghosting people.
I looked at the guide when he was setting up his instagram page and wasn't sure how inclusive it was going to be. 18 (approximate) minutes of you flipping through the pages convinced me. I just ordered one. I've compiled field guides on rite-in-the-rain paper for other "hobbies" of mine and I have an idea of how much work this was.
yeah!!! I've got the same system... Another option if you don't want to laminate is to use a Flight Crew Checklist "book". It is the old school plastic pouches you can change up or modify as you go. Thanks... Gunny
I've been working on this. I'm going to stop and buy this kit. Definitely worth my time to spend $100 instead of the hours and hours it would take. Thank you Austin
I definitely feel that's a great concept as it's something I'd done when I 1st got my ticket (minus the different modules that I didn't think of at the time). Pricey, but I understand what goes into making such a project and wanting to pay yourself back for time invested. I'd suggest adding a package without the binder pricing (for individuals who already have a six ring binder), as well as a down-loadable package for similar cost. I didn't see a weather/SKYWARN reference module, so I'd suggest that as well.
Mine just came in the mail. Great to see it on HRCC. It’s very nice, he’s thought of things to reference that I hadn’t thought of. A well made product. Worth the money if you look at the obviously large amount of time that went into making it.
I guess I should’ve be surprised by the amount of people complaining about the price, but I am. I already have too many projects and not enough time. For me to create something comparable to this would take me dozens of hours. That’s dozens of hours not shooting guns, hiking, mountain biking, taking photos, or learning new radio modes. $100 is absolutely worth it to me. If you’re a person that has way more time than money, then it probably makes sense for you to make your own.
Great reference. I would scan the pages into a pdf and put on a gorilla usb for emergency reference. Or maybe austin could do that as a separate product?
Thanks, I've been trying to buy it but the site is bogged. I've been working on this same set up but in a year of dabbling I only have frequencies for Florida 😢 Definitely worth my $100
Saw a vague post about this on X earlier, site was down. Tried again a few times through the hour, not even knowing what it was. This is absolutely the coolest field book. Tons of great addons as well, and easy to replace what might be damaged or misplaced. Med stuff is nice too.
I got mine in last week and I agree 100% with everything you said. Well worth the $100 and I also got the Anytone radio condensed manual, with three other radio manuals requested. Highly recommend!
@@himesjon There are 20 pages covering everything that's in the OEM manual. No pictures of course! The RITR paper is great and you can scribble all you want. Yes, helpful.

When you were going through all of those pages, and then showed how big it was. I thought it was going to be a lot thicker than it is, that seems really compact.

This is really useful - very reminiscent of a TAM (Tactical Aid Memoire) we use in the military all the time. There is a market for a European version I am sure.
Just looking at the Binder and 1 pack of the printer paper to fit it (Same/Same Material wise) is over $75 US at Amazon. so yeah the Value is there, even if its a little hard to splurge to that level.
The website was up for another dozen orders or so, but has crashed again. Tech-support is bumping the server up to the next level of capacity. If you try to get in and you can’t, please try again in about 15 minutes.
@@SNAFU_73 The company that hosts the store has been less than stellar in resolving the issue. It is being worked on. It had been running fine for months. It was the extreme amount of traffic.
As someone that has done typesetting for commercial printing before, there is a LOT of hours that went into the formatting and design of these pages to get them to look the way they do, not to mention the information gathering. The Rite in the Rain paper for this size binder comes as 2 perforated pages on a carrier so the printer can feed it. That means each page has to be separated out and put in the binder by hand. It is also worth noting that for 110 pages and the binder, you are looking at about $35 in material, not counting the expendables for printing (toner, drum, printer wear and tear). So yeah, $100 is a bargain when you consider what all goes into this.
You can buy PVC books too. Just write in sharpie and erase with alcohol wipes. Mainly for keeping what you already wrote nice and readable in the weather.

I don’t think is as low as $30 but not $100 either. Maybe between $50-$75 sounds more comfortable. Because you have to add shipping and tax too. Not everyone lives in California where a $100 it’s pretty much a $20 in the other states lol

Hopefully the cost wi come down some. Maybe sell just the paper inside without the notebook. Or sell some of the chapters separate to make it a little cheaper. Or you buy it and if you have a prepper group or family they chip in to save a few $$ and you make a few copies for them but not to sell. Just my thoughts cool project though
(Edit for clarity) He could also sell it as a kit. It could be a virtual kit that includes affiliated links to the binder and rite in rain sheets and links to go find information or it could be a physical kit that includes the binder with some ham radio stuff on the inside cover and a pack of empty rite in rain half ring sheets for the do it yourselfers. The buyer can then “build it” themselves, researching information, assembling, formatting, and printing what they want on the pages if they have a laser printer. To me that time and effort isn’t something I want to spend. I would rather spend the $100. If it were something mass produced by a publisher using minimum wage laborers or outsourced over seas I am sure the price could come down. (Original message) He should sell it as a kit. That has all the materials that one could buy individually with affiliate links, links to all the websites with the publicly available resources. Then for the people whose time isn't money. Sure wish I had free time. They can build it themselves..... just going to all those sites to get the information and then formatting it all to fit that portable form factor makes this worth the price tag for me and the fact that I think you need a laser printer. If it were something mass produced by a publisher using minimum wage laborers I am sure the price could come down.
It may sound like I am disparaging or being flippant towards those complaining about the price. I dont mean to be. I am thinking about my high school self and how much free time he had even though he didn't think he had free time. $100 very likely would be too steep for him especially for a hobby he is just getting into. I am not retired yet, but its a time I look forward to and I imagine that may be a similar scenario for me. Although I have heard retirees say they have less free time after retiring....
You are being flip, and it’s obnoxious. When you were in high school, and you had any self-interest in something you would have built it yourself. Same with anyone else. Don’t be mad it’s $100, that’s selfish entitle bs. Just make it yourself.
Whoa I am not mad it’s $100. My message must not have been clear. For me, personally, it is definitely worth $100. Like I said in the first post just the time it takes to gather and put all that information in that form factor makes the price worth it to me. I recommended him also making it a kit so that for those who think it isn’t worth $100 instead of just saying “go build it yourself”. He can say here is the kit(or affiliate links) that includes all materials and all the public available links go build it yourself that way he gets a little more kickback.
You are 100% right that in Highschool I would have assembled it myself and if he had a group of links saying buy this this this and this (the materials) and another list of links saying here is where you can find the information to assemble yourself. I probably would have gone that route. If it isn’t clear I think he should sell it fully assembled ready to rock for $100 and then explore another option that those who think $100 is too much and say “I could do it for cheaper” here are my affiliate links for all the materials I used go for it make it yourself.
Can we order this in digital format? I’m studying for my Technition license. Other than studying for the test, are there videos on how to actually watch and learn what how to do some of this stuff? Tyvm Josh.
@HamRadioCrashCourse Possibly, my ignorance resulted in retiring at 55 (9 years ago). My ignorance is investing $4,000 in a Ham shack. My ignorance helped me EARN a BS and complete my EE. My ignorance and drive resulted in my going special in the USAF. Fortunately, my ignorance also helped me complete two finance classes to help me understand value (and investment). As such, I appreciate how different people apply different value to things they themselves determine personal worth.
In your boastful comment, you don’t mention any experience in printing, bringing a product to market or making your own field reference guide, yet you feel comfortable calling someone insane. That seems pretty disconnected from reality. I’m surprised your two finance classes didn’t mention “time value of money”.
Well thank you, I am glad to hear that you find some of my life successes are received as boastful. Here's more boasting for you. Started three successful businesses, two sold off, and amazingly each required printing, and publications (to market). The manual looks good, and I'm certain the positive reviews are warranted, but not money I'd spend, or at least not in this category. Best of luck.@@HamRadioCrashCourse

Sounds like more entitlement. Just make it yourself. Sit down, put the time in and do it.
This is totally awesome!
I was really interested until I learned it's $99 for the basic manual and expansion packs are more money.

Gotta start somewhere. Contact Austin via his website.
Soo cool
$100 for this field guide? This guy is up in the night. Insane.
Not really. But I think your position is more about your ignorance of what goes into something like this.
