From the Field -- E-flite F-15 Eagle 64mm EDF Flight Review

  • Here is my flight review of the E-flite F-15 Eagle 64mm EDF. As I mentioned last week, I was quite impressed by the performance of this airplane. It has great speed and pulls large vertical maneuvers. I like to paint scheme too (I'm a sucker for splinter camo!). There are two flights featured, one ROG and one hand launch. I mention it because I'm deathly afraid of hand launching airplanes (many bad experiences), but with SAFE, it ended up being an easy prospect once I could sort out how best to handle the airplane. It was quite the accomplishment for me, haha! My full article with CG, throws and Dx file is at: thercgeek.com/EFF15
    Please note that in the video I make reference to 100% "rudder" throw. This is in relation to the steering travel as the model has fixed rudders.

    When hand launching. I have noticed it’s easier to throw with your throttle hand, and control with aileron and elevator hand. Might be a little challenge to throw with your left hand, but you’re not chasing to get back to the aileron and elevator control stick. Just a thought. Take what you want and leave the rest.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  4 роки тому +1

      I do have links in the description. A good solid radio system is one of the best investments you can make, so if you’re looking for something less expensive than the dx8 I have listed, I’d recommend a dx6. This will give you options for future aircraft. You can get away with a 4 channel radio on this, but if you ever plan to get anything with retracts and flaps, it won’t work. For battery options, take a look at roaring top batteries (roaringtopusa.com). They are fantastic batteries and should last you a good while.

    • @catalinciobanu6639
      @catalinciobanu6639 4 роки тому

      The RC Geek If I take a dx6 will it work for a jet with retracts and flaps? I think I saw at the Viper jet (with retracts and flaps) that they recommend a 6 channel transmitter, but I’m not sure if it’s working, that’s why I ask. I will never be able to buy expensive jets, that’s why I’m looking for cheap stuff. I found a transmitter with 8ch at around 50$, but I don’t know how good it is. I really need advice!

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  4 роки тому +2

      Yes, a 6 channel radio will work with a jet that has retracts and flaps. I personally wouldn’t recommend getting something with less than 6 channels. Generally speaking, you get what you pay for with this stuff. You may be able to find a good used setup. What’s the $50 radio that you found?

U will at least need 7 channels.... unless you would leave Safe select out, And bind it with Safe activated... which is a pain if you want to turn it off because you will need to rebind the plane.... and since Catalin seems to be a Novice at best.... I would absolutely recommend the first few flights on Safe... Maybe train on a simulater a bit (a lot!! :p ) before trying the real thing. I myself use a Dx6e with my prop planes, got a good handle on em, but flying jets is a whole different experience. Hope you enjoy the hobby :)

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  Рік тому

      If hand tossing it without the landing gear on it, It’ll land in grass fine. With the gear, it’ll handle most prepared surfaces so long as it’s long enough. Now this as a beginner airplane, I wouldn’t recommend. To set yourself up for success, it’s best to build up some proficiency on a more forgiving airplane and then move on to this. The aero scout is a pretty fantastic trainer! bit.ly/AroScoutRTF I would also recommend seeking out a local club for some personal instruction. Typically clubs will have instructors who are happy to help newcomers. They will help get you going much quicker than trying to learn on your own.

    Just got this as a birthday gift with the 30C version of the battery. Can't seem to get it to charge with the S150 though, it goes into charge fault about 10 sec after connecting it. • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 роки тому

      In the radio D/R & expo menu, you want to adjust the percentages so that the actual surface deflections match the recommendations I’ve made in the video. So, you’ll need to check the surface movement with a ruler or something similar.

    As a newbie I'm starting out with a Carbon Cub but seeing this recommended as a good first jet for sometime in the future. But everything I'm reading is talking about the importance of flying with more rudder, so would something like this with no rudder teach bad habits if the goal is to graduate to the Thunderbird someday? (This is all far in the future but playing in the simulator encourages dreaming)

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  3 роки тому +1

      The f-15 is a decent edf, but I find that the 70mm viper jet is a better first edf if its viable. On the rudder, jets generally don’t need a lot of rudder for flying around, so I never found it an issue on the f15. For certain maneuvers it’s nice to have, but not necessary for most of what you’d want to do with it. In fact, there are some jets that I don’t use the rudder for anything other than steering based on how the airplane responds to it. The A-7 Corsair II is one of those as the airframe responds strangely to rudder inputs in flight.

      Well, if you’re wanting to fly the bnf models, it requires a spektrum radio. Truthfully, the best investment you can make is in buying a good quality radio system. Im flying a 4s 2200 and have my timer set 3 minutes. I like to fly the airplane pretty hard, so that ensures I have decent reserve. With better throttle management, it’ll fly longer.

      You will be hard pressed to find any electric jet that can fly for 20 minutes. As a propulsion system, they’re just not as efficient as propellers. They require more power input for comparable thrust to a prop.

    Could somebody mount a GoPro on there if they wanted to? Inside the cockpit?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  4 роки тому

      Yeah, guys do it. This airplane is a bit small for a GoPro, but there are some other fpv options that might be better for this particular model.

    Flies great once you dumb down the ailerons and dial up the elevator. If you dont do that you are always picking up the nose in turns.

    I still fly the old OS 91 in dynamax noisy jets but elec performance is impressive.
    I might just get one to fly off my lawn, I'm up in northern Maine,
    no one cares about anything up here, i don't need no stinkin AMA.

      Man, I haven’t flown a glow ducted fan since about 2000. Had a JHH ARF Hawk with a turbax 46 in it. Flew awesome! I miss the smell of glow, (I love the smell of burned glow fuel in the morning 😂) but I don’t miss the hassle of it too much.

    "the rudder is at 100% as well"? Doesn't it not have a rudder?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  3 роки тому

      That comment is in relation to the steering servo. I used the wrong word calling out rudder. There are not functional rudders on the airplane, only steering.

      Airbus737 I agree. I can’t wait for the day they make Servo less retracts so small that they can be installed on some umx models. I also wish eflite made a 70mm f15 like the thunderbirds f16. Also I’m still thinking about starting a rc plane yt channel from ur suggestion

    ALL OTHER EDFs I have had one can remove the EDF, open up to clean any grass, balance etc with the removal of two or three bolts. W this jet, it has bolts,but it is also GLUED! WTF!

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  4 роки тому

      Only that center runner is glued. Once removed, the fan is accessed through the hatch via two screws. That runner peels up pretty easily, but agree it would be nice if it was fastened instead.
