What if the loss is the reluctance to accept one was wrong? There are people who have a complete inverse conception of what is nobility and what is madness. How can one be 100% sure one is on the 'right' side, the moral high ground? One should at least investigate that. Isn't that what taking a loss means?
This is not a political statement. Rather, his use of philosophy and poetry is very soothing at this time. Somebody needs to be a loser. And still be okay with it. Right?.
