Daytona 2001 is the second best, imo. The first place belongs to Japanese only re-release of Daytona USA CCE, it's the only one where you can race at night, at sunset and whenever else you want. Also the music is much better and has all the new and old tunes. Check it out
I actually have a retro arcade near me with Daytona 2 and it's by far one of the most popular machines in the whole building. It's competing against Tekken 3, the Original Daytona, Street Fighter 2, and several other classic machines. Daytona 2 still outshines them. The game has a second wind in this capacity and if you can find one PLAY IT!!!!! I absolutely adored my time with it this last weekend.
I played it when I was on a trip in Italy last week and it was an incredible experience, especially since I've *never* played on Arcade cabinet before in my life!
Ooooo tell me more! I’ve never really seen Daytona 2 as very popular in my arcade experience so I’m delighted to hear it’s popular somewhere. Btw OP is wrong about Daytona 2 at #3, I’m just sayin’
Totally agree with Daytona USA 2001 being number 1 and especially if you play it with a FFB wheel and upscaled to 4K on Redream emulator. It plays like a dream!
Yessir!!!!! The only problem going online back then was when phone calls came in. If I remember correctly, a red light would blink to let you know you were about to be disconnected. You stayed connected long enough to scream noooooooooo lol. Great times and truly the best version of the series
Good list! One thing to nitpick about this list is that you used the championship circuit edition, which is the US release of the enhanced port on Saturn. The other version that was released in Japan (Daytona Circuit edition, I know great naming scheme) is so much better, it uses the arcade versions tracks, has a better draw distance, has different times of day for maps and even has a super similar drift that feels like the arcade version. This version to me is almost comparable to the arcade one. (Though it still feels like Sega rally in terms of control, but I like it personally)
Did you even played the og daytona version for the saturn, aside from the terrible graphics, the controls are close to the arcade. CE version has better graphics but worse controls and the 2001 can be great but you needed fine tune response time of the sterring on the options, the default controls are not good.
Last weekend, myself and a couple of my friends went to a CD/retro video game store. Since the only retro console I have is a Sega Dreamcast, I was really only looking at the Dreamcast games. That day I got very lucky as right at the front of the Dreamcast games section was an original, 2000, Japanese copy of Daytona USA 2001. I first played it yesterday and I must say, it does not disappoint one bit.
1000% every day of the week yes its the best Daytona, but dont tell the Reddit retrogaming horde that, for them 1995 Saturn Daytona is better. I was there in 1995 and Daytona was the reason to NOT buy the Saturn. It looked like dogshit compared to Ridge Racer. 2001 Daytona corrected that.
I enjoy the dreamcast version but can't help but feel that outside of the original 3 tracks, the new ones are pretty uninspiring. I'd have much preferred a few of the Daytona 2 tracks instead. Really enjoy your channel BTW.
@@Rod_Zaramella I've only just seen your reply here. My tip would be to play it in emulation with a racing wheel. It feels almost indistinguishable from the arcade that way.
@@markjames5535 Thanks Man! Yeah, likewise, I feel the 3 brand new tracks are slightly uninspired. It's baffling that they didn't use the 3 tracks from Daytona USA 2. I kinda like the Desert City one that gets re-used from Daytona USA: CCE on the Saturn, but the National Park course on the Saturn (and PC) had a gert huge working roller coaster on it, that's oddly absent in the Dreamcast version.
The Saturn version gets a bad rep. It’s actually one of the best ports of the game in terms of actual game play. It was a real port of the game so you were actually getting the arcade experience in your home instead of the other games which were their own gaming experience. It gets wrongly accused for not being visually as good as the arcade but that was inevitable since the Saturn was a $400 machine and the Sega Model 2 was about $4000 and you could see some set backs visually. I do like the Dreamcast version too but even that doesn’t feel quite as satisfying gameplay-wise to me. I admittedly haven’t played the 360 or PS3 versions I’m sure those are the way to go but I’m just standing up for the Saturn port which is much better than it’s given credit for
I’m no “champion” of Daytona championship USA(lol) but you can’t just put it under the saturn version. It at least has a good frame rate. In all seriousness good vid
I grew up with the Daytona USA series. I had the original release on Saturn and Circuit, both were pretty poor. Even though Circuit played better I still liked the original Saturn release more just because the whole experience was closer to the arcade package. I also had 2001 for my Dreamcast. The online was definitely laggy on my 56k modem and the controls were pretty bad. My personal preference is Daytona 2 BotE, Daytona 1, Scud Race (yes, i'm counting it.), Daytona 3, 2001, then Saturn and Circuit Edition. I'm just glad I have the Daytona 1 remaster for my PS3, it's perfect.
Just an FYI, Daytona 2 is available to play in the new Like a Dragon Gaiden game that came out in November 2023. In the arcade available in the city, along with Fighting Vipers, Virtua Fighter 2.1 and Sonic the Fighters (and a couple others) you can play Sega Arcade Classics 2 (I think that's what it's called) which is just Daytona 2. The emulation the game uses is pretty good from what I've seen, there is some sound distortion here or there but that's about it. Just an FYI.
I noticed for daytona 3 you only talked about the first version of the game. Sega later released a improved version of 3 called New Season. It did address gameplay and graphics but didn't add new stuff. Would you put that version over Champion Circuit or not?
He also talked about the oldest version of Circuit instead of the later Japanese ver, Circuit Edition, which has a number of updates over the US version.
