I personally feel that Hung Kuen is more well rounded. However Wing Chun seems faster to learn. Hung Kuen has both long and short range strikes and for the most part Wing Chun emphasizes close range striking predominantly. Hung Kuen is more power based where Wing Chun is a more speed based system, however, both are extremely technical and driven by proper mechanics and timing. I like both systems and draw from both to feed my own self expression. If I had to choose one to stick with for the long run id choose Hung Kuen. The Hung Kuen forms have always fascinated and inspired me. The various Chinese weaponry and the Hung Kuen history has always gave me great interest as well as the over all fighting concept and theories within the system art.
+Larry Jamieson if you are strong and like a lil bear hung gar is da shit if you are tall i would prefor something from da north iam just too fat for dat prayn mantis HHAHAHA
exactly, I practice Eight immortals because I like the feel of the movements, but my friend practices western style boxing because he likes to make use of his southpaw punches.
I did two and a half year of Hung Gar, on the side of my Wing Chun in the 1980's. I found all the techniques in WC was also in HG. In HG it was mostly done large frame, whereas WC was small frame. HG also contained many more techniques than HK WC. Southern systems has much in common.
Excellent video! A combination of skill and some comedy. I like it. You know that hung ga and wing chun have some elements that in both of them. So you can see some of the similarities as well as the differences.
Well, hung ga is actually a part of wing chun. Wing chun consists of five styles, white eyebrow, white crane, choy li fut, hung gar, and shaolin. So that's why it is difficult to tell the difference, ESPECIALLY when the guy here in the video is doing the MODIFIED style, with most of the weight on the back leg (You can see the similarity in the picture, but once you run the video, you can see who is who).
Although I appreciate your sentiment I ask you to consider things more objectively. I believe any type of fighting system has to be optimized for human kinetics and physiology. Humans have different physiology than four legged animals, insects, etc. Even our muscle fibers are much different than those of other primates. We simply cannot adapt to fight like animals that have different muscular-skeletal structure and reflexes. It's introducing unnecessary complexities. Yes, human potential and practice plays a lot to how effective someone uses a martial arts style, but so does having the proper platform. A tiger can outrun a human but would an Olympic athlete ever consider trying to rung like a panther on all fours? So why do it in a martial art? Why do things like BJJ, judo, Muay Thai, wrestling, prove to be effective time and time again? Because they are optimized for human kinetics and physiology and reflexes.
Max D. C'mon. Don't stoop to being the "word police". It's not an exercise in philosophy of logic. You know what I mean and I stand by it. "There's no such thing as a better MA. The difference is who's the better practitioner." That's a nice sentiment but hardly realistic. I'll grant that some styles suit some people's body types more than others but some styles are inherently more efficient and some less so. I have respect for traditional TMA but we have to be honest with ourselves that some martial arts are better for some things than others and i don't isolate this only for combat effectiveness. For celebrating culture and tradition, there is nothing more beautiful to practice than TMA be it traditional kung fu, wushu, one of the budo styles, arnis, pencak silat,... they have a soul. Yes, you hear me say it. TMA has a soul and a beauty of tradition and culture. Martial arts for entertainment, be it Beijing opera, or kung fu movies, requires a totally different skill set. If I'm watching a martial arts movie I don't want to see two guys roll around on the ground trying to put on a triangle choke (ie. The Lethal Weapon fight was boring). For this I would prefer to watch the athleticism of wushu or stage kung fu. For combat efficiency, I'm sorry if this offends, but I believe kickboxing, muay thai, BJJ, wrestling - and I'll even throw in modern sanshou - are far more effective than 5 animals styles doing horse stances, tiger claws and idealized poses. And there is the key problem. TMA is "idealized" in its concepts where as styles like BJJ and kickboxing are "optimized" using natural movements and more importantly in it's practice...full contact, and making sure what you practice actually works in application with a resisting partner who is also fighting back. In terms of combat practicality, do you think the US military would give their fighting men and women any less than the best? Do you figure they do their research? I think they do. So why do they now use BJJ, and muay Thai as the core of their hand-to-hand combat (FM 3-25.150)? If wing chun, hung gar, fu jow pai, bak mei, choy lay fut (yeah I know the lingo) tae kwon do, hapkido, aikido, or shorinryu were far more effective then would they not be using it instead? Tell me the truth...have you exposed yourself to enough TMA, and MMA to be able to make a statement because I have. I can chi sao with you one minute, and roll and work to take your back into a choke the next. So I'm not some MMA guy dumping on TMA. I've done both, I love both, but know the limitations. I love TMA, but don't be blinded just due to devotion to an art because it looks cool in a Donnie Yen movie... No. Some MA are better than others depending on the intended application. Max D., I don't troll or flame which just exposes know nothings who have never stepped foot in a martial arts class. I'll always explain my reasons and open to constructive discussion so I'm more than open to hear your side of why you agree with that statement. Let's talk it out.
Trick question Wing Chun is modified Snake and Crane techniques from Hung Gar. Qing Dynasty fast track resistance fighter training. Empty hand techniques, Double Butterfly Knives for guerilla warfare. Six and Half Long Pole is clearly Spear Drills. So if it ever goes the battlefield everyone who knows Wing Chun is already prepared. So the better system depends on the person's situation. Their timeline and goals. Self Defense needs? Be able to handle yourself in a bar fight or schoolyard bullies within a few months? Wing Chun. Want to learn a full system? Do some friendly or serious sports combat competition? Love extremely low stances and holding them long than you think is humanly possible building the strongest legs and biggest butt in Martial Arts? Hung Gar is calling you. Or go with the better teacher. Can never go wrong there. Or hey why not do both because we all end up there anyways. 武林一家 (Wu Lin Yi Jia)
That's a cool scene! Both southern martial arts systems. Many similarities. Hung Ga also sometimes called changing fist because of the 5 animal form within the system; this gives the practitioner unlimited combinations. Wing Chun works well because it is very adaptable.
Supermomo2007 that depends on which lineage your talking about since you obviously know something then you know that each lineage has something that has its own hereditary differences such as the Lam family Hung kyun has both long range and short range hands also if you talk to any one inChoi Lei Fut they'll tell you the same thing
And to this day i have no idea where this video is from. I though it was a fun fan project but both of these men are highly renowed actors. So,what is this? a show? a comercial?
Hung Gar, of course; has all the same essential movements as Wing Chun plus powerful, long range moves, and much more versatile footwork while not tying itself up with useless "chi sao". Now, if only Hung Gar could get away from its emphasis on forms training and start to drill in Chin Na methods a lot more, it might really be something.
Yeah, back when I trained Southern Mantis, we also did our own chi sao, but it was a more practical mobile exercise. The Wing Chun guys would try to play pattycake with us, and we'd just go right through them.
varanid9 - How do you go right through them? Won't the Wing Chun practitioners block and counter? I know some ways of defeating Wing Chun but they are too destructive for friendly fights. Arrogant Wing Chunners don't realise I hesitate from using them so as not to cause them injury.

Wing Chun is more efficient and better in depicting realistic combat strategies. But a Wing Chun practitioner who doesn't know any Hung Gar would lose since he doesn't have requisite knowledge of the different types of power generation, body mechanics, mental states.
The whole point of UFC was to see which style is best. I think Hung Gar is better than Wing Chun but if neither have sparring compared to Muay Thai,BJJ,Wrestling or Judo they will always be inferior

True, Larry you are right
Perfect example of nothing because it wasn't real. How could a choreographed fight show anything except some ideal vision of both styles?

Ooooh 36 chambers okay! :)
You fucking idiot, wing chun did come from five different systems. Why don't you just shut the fuck up and check up on it? You'll see I'm right.

just saw this movie today!Hung gar vs wing chun, great hilarious movie with authentic moves.A low budget but worth watching quite a few times
Hilarious!! Two guys trying to out show off each other. Hung gar and Wing chun have many similarities.
Would love to live in the same apartment complex as these guys. I would get trained by both and be the best female martial artist.
Good plan!

netmasterx I thought the Grand Fist is taijiquan?
***** You are correct...
Excelentes tanto los estilos como ambos exponentes
It must be nice to have a nice big terrace to practice on!
Definitely a great video!! 2 great styles!
Which is the more practical or applicable of the major Southern styles would have been a better discussion.
Gordon liu..un genio...jose de paraguay
very good, congratulations.

movie hung kuen v wing chun
I like both!
Isn't the guy using the Hung Gar style, the same guy that played Pai Mei in Kill Bill?
Aaron Parker yes he's the same guy
His name is Gordon Liu
The first time I saw Liu Chia Hui and Liang Chia Jen fighting was in Shaolin Martial Arts 1974
didnt get a bit of what gordon was doing, can you explain?
Which is better? Hong Kong cinematography, or real life?
What's up with the rings?
What is the title of the movie
title pls
Hung Kuen vs. Wing Chun, it's a romantic comedy...
Muito bom Wing Chun e hung gar ,são os meus estilos favoritos de kung fu.
HEY! Hung gar master seems Mai Pei from Kill Bill... Am I wrong? XD
jiggahippo :( he seems like a very pleasant sifu.
The only great master of Hung gar , Dr. Chiu Chi Ling is , Heir style , currently lives in U.S.A.
Lex Luthor wrong best Hung Ga Lam family style Sifu Miachel Goodwin SF, Ca

Saw the movie on YT (with English subtitles) but can't remember the name. Excellent movie though ;)0
The title was in Chinese ....

Hung Gar is definitely better than Wing Chun, it's a more powerful and complete martial art.

That one like was probably you
No Way! Wing Chun is the best
both are really good, imagine an awsome practioner, who combined both together, in MMA hung gar +wing chun . but there is no best all on the person
I respond to the title question with another: better at what?
Amazing
Because im a Nanquan.
Prefer the hung gar..
And hung gar..
I practice wushu..
And..
I like nanquan because it is like similar to hung gar..
for self defense?
@@Supermomo2007 for self defence and for exercise purposes.. but in self defence i feel modern kung fu was not a good as traditional

ronki23: my hung gar class has sparring.

i think they should just call it a tie
This is a real comedy pearl. LOL!
Wing Chun = Snake and Crane
Hung Gar = Tiger and Crane
hung is actually five animals so
Its funny because the trapping system from Hung Gar and Wing Chun are virtually the same because the system comes from crane style lmao.

hung gar is overall quite effective. wing chun is more centre of body fighting, but that has uses too... best way? combine both
worth watching for the first minute alone!
i'll always pick hung kuen over wing chun any day!

Yes. Just yes.

Yes, Gordon Liu!
THAT WAS AWESOME ! : D
Depends who is writing the movie :D
Juntar es mejor
Nothing is better
If two identical twins trained in one martial art each, Hung Ga would win. Wing Chun has almost NO foot work movement, where hung ga actually does.
Definetly Wing Chun, is more beautiful and more defensive
easy answer, dont need to watch, there is no better or worse style, there are just better or worse trained people
I don't know. Both style are defensive.
hung gar is both offensive and defensive. Tiger is very offensive and is part of the form. Technically the same techniques can be used as a defensive or offensive movement.
wing chun is 100% offensive. attack is the best method of defence.
chineseboxer9991 wing chung has no attack technique nor neither theory developed attacks. Direct punch is no attack technique for me.
