While I was vacuuming, I found artifacts that looked extremely creepy. What made it scarier was... it was neither me nor my wife who put the artifacts. But I think I know who the culprit is, and I'm going to confront her today.

I'm surprised many don't know this practice. It's known as 安床. It is placed at the 4 corners of the bed.

The MIL is so traditional and yet so open minded.
She allowed you to tell her that she sneaked into your room… and still can act along with you.
If I tell my MIL, she will reprimand me for being disrespectful and threaten to jump down from the window.
Those are affinity coins (大缘小缘钱), as the stamped Chinese characters indicate. They are wedding accessories for the bed-setting (安床) process, to be placed at the various 4 corners (bed, wardrobe, etc.) in the matrimonial bedroom to bless the couple. Another version is with knotted copper coins (安床铜钱). The custom is supposed to be very formal & ceremonial, so I'm kinda surprised you weren't kept in the know.

You should be concerned if your maid or a stranger places something under your bed.
You can rely on your mother-in-law since she is incredibly conventional, which is uncommon in today's society. Even yet, it's helpful to understand the significance of the enticing hidden symbols for "provision" and "happy union". You can ensure that everything that has blessing meaning, she will not hesitate to put them in the house, including hers. However, younger generations don't practice such culture anymore but I guess your MIL is in her 60s, not very old.
Vlog style is good! Kinda miss them. Anyways, about the issue of secretly placing charms around. I think the act of trying to hide it can be a little offensive, but if you just consider the intention, it was for good. Perhaps mum was afraid you and wifey wouldn't be too receptive of such ideas due to its superstitious nature, but still wanted to bless the marriage in her own way. Either way, of course its always good to give the blessing openly instead of sneakily, but as long as the intention was pure, no need to get too upset.
Just when I am starting to miss the mom-in-law , immediately a new video about her! Now we can look forward to video with Jeremy... ;P

Never knew of such practice 😄. But it’s done with good intentions. I’m ok with my mum coming into my room to place this at the corner of my bed. Don’t see the big Hoo ha. Not like she open my drawer and cupboard. When I travel, my mum & dad actually come to my house and help me clear letter box, sweep/mop the floor.

it's a token of blessing that your mother-in-law acquired for you guys so that your marriage will be lasting and happy. It's a well intended gesture in the many Chinese traditions, and the practice vary depending on the dialect group. Maybe Japanese 神道 has similar practice, where some small items are acquired from the temples as a token of blessing? “百年好合” means hundred years of harmony.

Your MIL has good intentions, however not everyone will appreciate this as need to be sensitive to different faiths / beliefs. That aside, your MIL is a natural in front of the camera, with her spontaneous and very natural + humorous quips.

i think it is what they called as "an chuan" - to give protection to 4 corners of the bed (usually done during day of chinese traditional "guo da li" ? so your bed will not collapse? and u will not get nightmare lol
Take note of Culture differences.
Like the colour "Red" is auspicious in the East, but it is taboo in South America.

The blessings are well intentioned. Still it's not her house, even as a MIL doesn't giver her the right to do so. Can always give it openly and let the owner decides whether he/she believes in such a thing. As an ethnic Chinese myself, I won't mind too much but at the end of the day, it's only right to do so openly instead of sneakily.
