The story of Diablo 1, Diablo 2, Diablo 3, and Diablo Immortal doesn't fully explain all the lore of Diablo. In this 18th episode of our Diablo lore series, we look at Act 1 of Diablo 3, in which Tyrael falls and Deckard Cain perishes.

Hello Rhykker. With all these lore videos you're doing, your new name is now Rhykard Cain.
You know what could be a really cool way to explain Lea's apparent amnesia of her past fighting daemons? If Deckard Cain in a semi selfish/altruistic move, erased her memories using an ancient tome in order to preserve her sanity over the accumulated trauma she lived. This could come back in the future as she unlocks her hidden memories and goes nuts and becomes a villain or something.
Nope, in the book 'The Order' she remembers nothing of what happened, and only vaguely of her life before meeting Cain. The book implies it's either repression from a super traumatic experience ( not unusually, especial in a 10 year old kid going through a mess like that ) or it could have been Diablo manifesting his power to make Belial back off that wiped her memories. And well, if you've played D3 you know why her going nuts in the future isn't a worry

Well its basically the whole plot of reaper of souls. Malthael went completly bonkers, because he, the archangel of wisdom, couldnt figure out where human souls go to after death.
Maybe, like in the LOTR realm, they go-to anu .

Deckard's death was the biggest problem I had with the D3 story. Not that he died - he got off better than most of the people who fought Diablo. Diablo has no happy endings, for the most part. But, spoilers (if it matters for an old game with two sequels already):

Why was he jobbed to advanced the plot instead of, you know, having Diablo kill him? His surrogate daughter gets possessed and turns into Diablo in a pretty "well that happened" kind of scene. What if instead Cain and Adria met in that scene with Leah, and Cain was killed by Diablo through Leah in a glorious backstab? I've always thought the only reason this didn't happen is because it would be TOO obvious, but it's still better than him just getting killed by random butterfly lady to establish her as a villain right before she's picked off just as unceremoniously.
@Rhykker, I don't know if you are familiar with the meaning of the name Tyrael, but it means "Fear God" in Hebrew. But fear in the sense of respect

( sorry for multiple comments, but don't want one massive wall of text ) Going over Act 1, what really makes Cain's death so tragic....he survives to old age even through Leoric going mad and killing villagers left and right...he survives everything in D1, he survives the razing of Tristram and everything in D2...he wanders the globe looking for knowledge and allies for 20 years after that and survives everything the world throws at him.
The Fallen Star smashes into the rotting Horadric Cathedral while Cain is inside, practically on top of him, for dozens of sub-levels. 3 days later even though he wasn't really packed for dungeon crawling he still makes it almost all the way back to the surface on his own and is pretty much ok.....but Mahgda shows up and zaps him once....poof, no more Deckard. Laaaaame! Coulda just let the old guy retire, too worn out for world saving. Nope, gotta kill the codger instead.
Had to watch twice the part about taking the sword off the wall!

I keep thinking that it would've been better if Leah's Blast was the thing that, due to her lack of control, wounded Deckard. You know... Wounded directly by dark energy from Diablo (at least genetically at this point in the story) could justify the lack of 'healing magic', it's just too strong for a mortal to endure. It would've been more tragic? Absolutely, but hey we're used to tragic here.
Deckard Cain only had a tragic end because of the butchering of Leah's story.
If the final act didn't turn into what it did, and Leah was there to support us at the end; it wouldn't have been tragic. It would have been passing the torch to the next generation and bittersweet.
I believe that Magda (I probably didn’t spell that right) should if she not already is the most hated character because she killed Cain

TLDR. He was killed by a butterfly. It was a hilarious, unmotivated and shameful end to a classic character.
It's a regular theme in Diablo that common sense is often overlooked in order to set the stage for progression in the franchise. I mean, how else are you going to fight the demons of hell again if you don't trust this random crazy stranger with the only item that stands between peace in Sanctuary and unleashing the depths of hell?
I would like to see Leah resurrected so Diablo has a fresh body to possess but another demon prevents Diablo possessing because of Leah's rage at her father for using her. The connection between her and Diablo prevents the demon from fully possessing her. The demon slowly dies but Leah absorbs his power freeing her from Diablo control forever.
The promo code doesnt work in Denmark at least.

the death part of sanctuary souls was quite intriguing. i mean, lilith and inarius created sanctuario - and also a place for souls to rest? why would they - cause they and their children have been immortal. so who created this? (traghoul maybe? for "balance" purposes?)

My bad dude" , (Leah talking about him becoming mortal and being one of them) "Yeah not my smartest moment the whole angelic power probably coulda helped but that's why I'm not the angel of wisdom I guess" (imperium dies) "Oh shocker who'd have seen that coming"

So it’s been 6 months. That either means the next is coming soon or 6 more months. One or the other. There is no in between.
Where was Tyrael in D4 ?
In game no one knows. It's something that you can ask about a couple times, I believe, but the answer is always the same; Tyrael just walked off for some reason. The game made it sound like Tyrael either grew disillusioned that they weren't making any progress or doing any good in the world OR he sensed something else happening and went to go investigate.
In either instance it kicked off Elias going full potato, going on his depressed walkabout, and learning about Lilith then deciding she was the Get Out Of Jail Free card that Sanctuary needed.
You would naturally think that Tyrael would see Lilith as a pretty good reason to stick around, so my guess is that Tyrael got stuck, imprisoned, bested, or something happened to prevent him from being able to take action against Lilith. Knowing the angels, Tyrael probably went to try to talk sense into Inarius and got hurled into the darkest corner of the world somewhere.
There's not a chance in The Burning Hells that Diablo isn't showing up in his namesake game at SOME point and MY guess is that they're saying the reveal for what happened to Tyrael for that moment.

7:48 Yeah, Blizz retconning established lore isn't too uncommon. After all it's really hard to make new content that matches what you already established, and nobody remembers stuff from a decade ago so it's easier to just make shit up as you go along and never acknowledge that the new stuff doesn't match.
I mean hey, in D3 it's established that the loss of the Worldstone means humanity is waking up to the powers they originally had before as Nephilim...D4 it's like that never ever happened. I mean they couldn't even come up with some weak but reasonable excuse like 'It's been so any generations since the Nephilim heritage was sealed that it runs weak in the blood of man' or something...and the heroes from D3 just had some really good genetics or something. But nah, that's too much work, easier to just pretend that was never a thing.
