Followup question would be: "Other post Soviet countries also had miserable 90s and nowadays the quality of life is higher, they did it without Putin as their president, why do you credit the economic upturn to Putin?"
Stability ??? What a joke, to took the corruption and hid in the FSB....and the Government, and aligned himself with the gang leaders of so called Oligarchs.
Daniil, although your videos are meant for and mostly watched by western audiences, isn’t it possible for the Russian government to use facial recognition software (they use in Moscow subway system) to accurately identify-and possibly arrest-these Russian citizens for criticizing Putin, the Russian government, the war, etc.??? I’d play it safe and blur and/or block out people’s faces. Just a suggestion.
The man 2:00 makes the point that Russia was close to default and Putin saved it. You should point out the special operation and subsequent sanctions brought russia back to default. So Putin has undone the one good thing everyone else agrees upon. The rest of it, a more "independent" foreign policy in other words killing your neighbors and kidnapping children and shutting down civil society is only a good thing to fascists.
You should also point out hitler was popular because of what he did for the economy and many germans were willing to go along with everything else he did because of this.
90’s in Russia: People lost all their money in one night, all their savings in the bank was worth of pennies.. old lady on Moscow street went on her knees and begged for merciful few coins. We werent used to see people begging in our wealthy home land. I wonder nobody mentioned the oligarchs, it was a huge swindle of money, from society to oligarchs as the communist economy collapsed. Putin’s friends…
I'm from Estonia and have visited Russia many times (before the war) and the first impression I always get after crossing the border is like going back from time about 15-20 years. At some rural places the "time travel" goes back even more. "What good has Putin done for Russia?" - Putins focus has always been outside from Russia. He has said that collapse of the soviet union has been the biggest drama in history. His foreign policy has been led by imperialistic thinking. Putin and his corrupted super-rich allies shit to golden toilets but the living standards of general people is below the standards comparing to post-soviet countries that now belong to EU. If he only cares about Russian people he would not send thousand and thousands to die in the war at Ukraine he started, but invest in people, to culture, wealth, education etc. Putin goes to the history as an aggressor and a dictator who has been rubbing and fooling his people with outrageous propaganda. It's painful to see how apathetic are Russian people - it is because under the dictatorship civil society can not develop. Russians believe that somewhere there over the rainbow is "smart Putin" who is taking care of them. But the "smart Putin" is actually a war criminal, The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for him. 90's and 00's were difficult times everywhere, not only in Russia. It is not Putins favour that life is more stabile than back in 20-30 years.
if he really cared he would acknowledge he doesnt have the education and expertise to take russia forward and step down. Pootin and his deluded inner circle must to go!!
He did s lot of good things: He made Finland and Sweden to join Nato, he made the european Union more united than ever, he made the german giant to wake up, announcing a rearm plan of 100 billions euro, he made the russian jails empty, he introduced to the world "gentlemen" like Kadirov, Pryghozin, Lavrov, medvedev... but the most important thing he showed to the world that russia is not a military and/or an economical power, today nobody is scared about russia.
@@davefranklyn7730 Even then, are we really scared of that? Russia sets off a nuke and the entire west turns every square meter of russian land to glass, with Putler in it. I don't think Putler is suicidal, just stupid and greedy.

Send love and peace to russia and ukraine. But the damage that russia caused in ukraine and ukranian people hearts is very deep. Your channel has given me another opinion about russia!!
"He raised the prestige of our country" This one killed me. Yeah Russia's reputation is extremely prestigious, you can see it clearly from the fact that even China and India are now starting to vote against Russia in UN resolutions

It used to be in the 2000s until the early 2010s. He may helped out Russia out of the 90s (economic crisis, tensions between highest soviet and president, organized crime…) but events since 2014 (especially since 2022) make it difficult to stick on him, especially for younger people who didn’t experience Russia’s 90s

I’ll never forget in the 1990s a Russian ship came in the port in Halifax Canada. There was an outpouring of vegetables and fruits and things for the Russian soldiers because they had nothing. They came to a basketball game at the University and to this day, I still remember the stink of diesel on their clothes, none of them looked happy.
As one person pointed out he did nothing, he was lucky that when he became president there was economic growth in the world, which made hydrocarbon prices high, hence the myth of his "great economic management" and "getting up from knees".
By the way, countries don't go bankrupt. It's a myth made up by those people like Schäuble so that the Greece government would sell out their profitable state property to German banks and corporations. You can only lose credit score in foreign currency, which is completely pointless for the domestic affairs.
Its not even that. It was similar in every single fricking ex-warsaw country including mine. And every single one of them has it better now in 90s. How did Ukraine do it without Putin? How did Poland? Or Estonia? Latvia? Lithuania? Kazachstan? Romania? Bulgaria? Czechia? And I could continue like this. There was chaos after our revolutions when we stopped being communist countries, but of course this chaos slowly got better.
@@fridericusrex6289 that's right, but the countries that freed themselves from the "big brother" had to develop a diversified economy, in Russia it was enough to extract gas and oil, which was bought especially by Germany at prices lower than others (which of course favored Germany)
Putin can actually make miracles. Some years ago, i was married to ukrainian woman. We visited her family, in Ukraine. Her uncle was in a wheelchair and he hadn't walked for many years, after a mine-accident. One evening,we sat in the livingroom and tv was turned on and Putin showed up on the screen and began to talk. After 5 seconds, the uncle stood up from his wheelchair, and went to the television and turned it of. Now that's what i call for a f*****g miracle...
It is very interesting that they always say that they do not have the necessary knowledge when they are asked about their country or their country's politics, but they are very competent when they talk about other countries, suddenly they know everything.
You're incredibly brave for what you are doing and it is so interesting to hear from actual russian citizens instead of getting your information about russia from the media. Estonia, Latvia Lithuania, every other former USSR member, were in chaos in 1990s. In Estonia we had organized crime groupings, shootings with automatic rifles, pittance of salaries, stamps for food products. We also had no oil, no gas, titanium, diamonds, gold, vast farmlands with mild climate, etc etc. And also no Putin to save us. But the three Baltic states doubled their GDP per capita compared to Russia's, before joining EU and before any EU development funds. Estonia is now among least corrupt countries by now, among highest in press freedom, human freedom index, rule of law index. Not among former Soviet states, nor former Warsaw pact countries, but among world. Trick is to not have a Putin to "save you". Putin became president when oil prices were on the rise, from historical low to historical high. Roll a dice among all Russians and he-she would have been a better president. A ruthless thug with insatiable appetite, skill to lie without any tells, and effective propaganda machine
I mentioned what you just wrote many times. Actually, I myself was robbed in Riga in 1995 as tourist, but look at the Baltic States now. The true illness lies with the disgraceful Russian people, and always will. They do deserve their crappy leaders. But _we do not!_

Wow glorious success story. Congratz to Estonia! It seems a time has come, again to tear Russia into your former Livonia parts.. So as Karelia, Republic Veliki Novgorod, Kievan Rus, Evenks, Samoyeds, Tatars, Balkhars, Tuva, Burjats.. and so on. The only solution to make some Russians normal, non-militant imperialistic murderers. Of course noone wants that from outside. But noone has enough money, people and factories to sane such a lying robbing Empire, every 30 years. It has to be diminished to normal, non-aggresive state. First it starts some killings, even with worst dictators like Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol-Pot - and then other millions, whole countries have to cooperate to save something normal, alive from such wars. 😞

Nope, just to the west. For the rest of the world, business with Russia has actually increased since the war and more and more members are signing up to join BRICS.
In the last UN vote to "strongly condemn" Russia, 146 of 198 nations voted against Russia. 5 nations voted with it - Russia itself, Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Eritrea. It lost Cuba as a supporter from the last vote. What an amazing collection of nations that is. Even then, Belarus will exist once Lukashenko is removed from power or dies, Assad won't need them after the war is over in Syria and Eritrea votes for them because the Russian military occupies their nation. So really it is North Korea that is the only true ally of Russia, they have economic and cultural bonds that are stronger than ever.
Only in the West. Most of the rest of the world see this different. India and China for instance collectively almost 3 billion, they are still pro Russia. If anything, the non-Western world admires or least respects Russia as a martial people thats brave enough to take on the collective West/NATO. They haven’t lost much respect or standing on that ground, though their military has (with its slow progress).
Many people reference the 1990s as a time of bad economy and hard times in Russia. What they don’t acknowledge is that Russian I was getting out of the old Soviet system, which is exactly what Putin wants to bring back. The people that really got Russia out of the horrible economy and focus the right direction into the world economy was Andropov and Boris Yeltsin. They are the ones who gave Putin is stabilized Russia that was headed on the right track economically. All he had to do with steer it, and he has chosen to steer it over a cliff.
Russia had all the opportunities to become a modern, prosperous, and leading country in the last 30 years. Not only that, it could have acted as a gateway of Europe to Asia and vice versa. Instead, the path of corruption was continued by the elites, and the welfare of the broad mass of people was neglected. However, I do not think that only one person can be held responsible for this development.
Putin had the magical ability to trade energy products for capital at a time when the international community wanted to normalize relations. The first person to normalize those relationships was Gorbachev. It also wasn't the international community that was stealing and grifting the Russian state post 90's so everyone worshiping how he "stabilized" their country should understand that it was Russia's problem to fix and now their putin is the wealthiest person in the world including the royals of saudi. Seems he fixed the Grift problem by becoming the biggest thief
Actually Pootin was in centre of that miserabe-state creation in 90-ties, too. With organised crime between "Piterskie" murderers, called "Vory v zakone", the worst criminal orgaisations like "Solncevska bratva". When rushing for Moscow administration chief, he was already 7-th richest. So he (and his KGB Dresden East-german office) were and are the cause of that poor state, along with other Oil-robbers of own country. So as of Ukraine country and other ex-colonies. Basically, he fought for power by destroying his even richer competitors. By means of murders and KGB prosecution, as usual. A hijacked state. True is, he transferred some oil income back to state (to keep himself power) - but only because State (+state enterprises like Gazprom, Rosneft) has lower interest rates, compared to his private enterprises like Gunvor, Trafigura (biggest oil traders in world). So now his "business case" with Russia is conducted like this: Some of oil petro-dollars go to state banks, they issue bonds and allow others to invest (russian, so as Dutch-Shell, Exxon), over-estimate their properties, like Oil reserves. And they get lower interest rates from this robbery. Exactly as Donald Trump did with his marvellous Skyscraper, Atlanta casinos and so on. A miracle- biggest investors in this state-pyramid yo-yo Ponzi scheme is again his Gunvor,Trafigura (or whatewer company names he uses now). Biggest loans from state GazpromBank, VTB Bank, Sberrbank state Savings, and => biggest % stake of property in "new enterprise" oil fields. Bougt exactly by such State-lent money, not by his own, previously-robbed funds. Again as usual, these new oilfields were mostly explored and built by West companies in 2009-2013, but highest % of property and income goes to - Putin. And when it is not enough- why not to start another useless War? They (western investors) would leave by themselves or I can conduct a "coupon offer" to nationalise their stakes. Or to offer them re-buy of their same stakes, their work which they done in revealing new Russia oil fields!

@@thilomanten8701 Well, precisely. Even though I think that the case of Russia, propagandistic parallelisms with Nazi Germany apart, is quite more unique given the endemic and pathological indifference of its population towards the upper echelon of their society, both economic and political.
How about hearing a young Russian student admitting that he is aware that land in Donbas is rich in raw energy natural resources? After this Russians cannot say they "they were not aware that it was a proxy war about access and control over natural resources." If a young student is aware of it, it's impossible for this not to be a rather common knowledge. After all it's a freshman, not a university professor or a military man or energy industry professional with lots of professional experience under his belt.

Many people say that Putin got Russia on its feet. Received Russia in a horrible condition. But actually the crisis of transition from Soviet economy to new market economy ended before Putin appeared. All the credit goes to the talented people in government who were still there then, people like Nemtsov and Kasyanov. Another popular opinion is 'stability'. With the exceptionally high oil prices and proper management Russia could have developed into a truly prosperous country with developed social sector, healthcare, education and innovations. Instead, all the money went to pockets of Putin's closest friends. Tens of dollar billionaires, all of them appeared thanks to stealing of budget money and direct permission of Putin. It is surprising for me how people think that steady decline in all government areas can be considered 'stability' (talking about pre-Ukraine war period). Now Russia is facing the crisis (or rather the consequences of the crisis, since it has already began). And it will take years and years to recover from.
For people who answered "improved from 90's" - all countries in the region improved from 90s, that's nothing special considering oil and gas prices. Most of these answers hark back to Putin saving Russia from collapse & chaos in the 90s. Which is why I've always felt Putin should have retired after his 2 full terms as President in 2008. The country's politics would have taken its own shape & maybe integrated better with Europe without any wars, & a strong economy. Putin would've been remembered as a better version of Deng Xiaoping of Russia, who brought not just prosperity, but also stability to the country! ~You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain
The problem is that you fail to understand what brought about that chaos in the 90s. It was the aggressive western IMF economic policies that destroyed Russia's economy and all to secure and privatise Russia's natural resources through the usual usurious practices of the IMF. Without Putin's strong hand, the western stooge Yeltsin would have succeeded in eviscerating Russia. The truth is that in a world where the US pursues hostile economic warfare to enrich itself and its industries at the cost of everyone else, Russia without a strong leader would have been a sitting duck sitting on the world's richest reserves of oil, gas and rare earths.
Putin could not have retired in 2008 and he can never retire? Why? Because Putin was a master of monopolizing corruption under the state. Putin masterfully set up a system in which his siloviki and a small group of oligarchs benefit from massive corruption to the detriment of the entire population. Putin is the spider at the center of the web. There is a balance of power of competing interests that is maintained by Putin. Russia does not have legal institutions that operate under a rule of law. Institutions operate at the direction of those in power. Therefore, there can be no stable succession to Putin. Even under the Soviet Union, the communist party operated under a certain logic in which the government was optimized for the preservation of the party and its institutions. This created a certain peaceful sequence of succession from Khrushchev through Brezhnev and ultimately Gorbachev (skipping over less important ones). Under Putin, the entire country is organized to maximize wealth extraction for him, his siloviki, and oligarchs who do not oppose him. Importantly, the entire power structure is held together because those at the top have some sort of personal relationship and rapport with Putin. It's not like a monarchy where titles matter or a democracy where people are in power because they're elected. If Putin goes, any of these people know that they could be imprisoned, expropriated or killed. This is why they continue to support Putin -- because they fear a future in which they could lose what they have without Putin. This is what happens when corruption erodes all rule of law and institutions in a country. Russia is rotten at the core, and it's unclear if it will still hold together after Putin goes. Since he is mortal, his regime will eventually end.
Then came Medvedev, then a change of the constitution to allow Putin to come back for a nonsensical reasoning, then a second extension of the time period that Putin is allowed to 'serve'. All contrary to the Russian constitution that no one in Russia cares to defend. Russians should've protested in 2008 but they wanted Putin back. They didn't realize that removing the foundation of democracy, leadership that actually changes, is not worth any leader no matter how good. Real democracy can support itself and doesn't need a President for Life.

Those who answered ''stability'' have no ide what stability means
But it is true that the country is still more stable than in the 90s

These young people don't know their history
The fear shows on their faces
Putin had the magical ability to trade energy products for capital at a time when the international community wanted to normalize relations. The first person to normalize those relationships was Gorbachev. It also wasn't the international community that was stealing and grifting the Russian state post 90's so everyone worshiping how he "stabilized" their country should understand that it was Russia's problem to fix and now their putin is the wealthiest person in the world including the royals of saudi. Seems he fixed the Grift problem by becoming the biggest thief
so sad, so true
Biggest loans from state GazpromBank, VTB Bank, Sberrbank state Savings,
and => biggest % stake of property in "new enterprise" oil fields.

It’s so depressing to hear Russian people say “I’m not interested in politics” or “I’m not competent in this matter”. One can understand how it’s possible that such a dictator can rule a country that is supposedly made of cultured people.

@@qksf1645 first of all:
From 2000 to 2009, Ukraine’s real growth averaged 7.4 percent and was thus very similar to Russia’s. Second of all, GDP since then grew besides 2014 Russia invasion in Donbas and Crimea. Third of all - Ukrainians realized that governments steered by Russia is not good for them, especially in 2012-2014. So your thinking is going in good direction but little lack of basics of Ukraine and their struggles.
@@qksf1645 The reason why Ukraine and other countries have not been able to achieve stability is that Putin has constantly stirred up conflicts there. He is also trying to destabilize western democracies. And many countries have done far better with their economies, even though they had much less potential than Russia and were significantly worse off than Russia after the collapse of the USSR.
It would be interesting to hear the question first "Which countries are worse off today than in the 90's?" before they answered this one. Also, I found it interesting that people would answer "improved from the 90's" but did not give a concrete answer **how** he did that.

Lol, your processor comparison was brilliant 1420, as this is exactly what happened with the global rise of oil prices coinciding with Vladolf Putler's first years in office, automatically "stabilizing" the Russian economy. It was written about a country where people were paid with vodka because they had no money, where parents sold their children because they had no money. If Putin has at least proven that the average Russian now has a salary in money and not in alcohol and that parents don't have to sell their children, then he has achieved enough in my opinion. Asking the question in russia is not about getting an answer but for example to analyze the overall feeling.
Understandingly so many answer the question in such ambiguous manner that in the end amounts ; I keep my head down, my answers guarded n give fealty on the drop of a dime.
