Robert Sandifer (March 12, 1983 - September 1, 1994) (also known as Yummy) was an 11-year-old boy from Chicago, Illinois. His murder by fellow gang members in Chicago garnered national attention because of his age, resulting in his appearance on the cover of Time magazine in September 1994. His nickname originates from his love for cookies. Standing 137 cm (4 ft 6 in), Sandifer was a young member of the Chicago street gang the Black Disciples (BD).
After committing murder, arson and armed robbery, he was murdered by his own fellow gang members who feared he could become an informant, and that he was attracting too much attention towards their activities. Coverage of Sandifer's death and retrospectives on his short, violent life were widely published in the American media. Sandifer became a symbol of the gang problem in American inner cities, the failure of social safety nets, and the shortcomings of the juvenile justice system.
Robert Sandifer was born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 12, 1983. Sandifer's mother, Lorina Sandifer, had over 30 arrests while prostituting, many of which were drug-related. Sandifer's father, Robert Akins, was absent throughout Sandifer's life due to incarceration for a felony gun charge. Sandifer was physically abused from the time he was an infant.
Before he was three years old, Sandifer was already known to the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Physical examinations showed that Sandifer was alleged to have had cigarette burns on his arms and neck as well as linear bruising consistent with physical beatings. Lorina initially blamed the abuse on Sandifer's father, although she later recanted.
In 1986, Sandifer and his siblings were removed from his mother's home by DCFS and were sent to live with their grandmother in the Roseland neighborhood of Chicago. His grandmother's residence contained as many as 19 children on some occasions. By most accounts, his grandmother's home was not much better than Sandifer's previous home.
Sandifer, by the age of eight, quit attending school and began to roam the streets stealing cars and breaking into houses. At the age of ten, Sandifer was arrested on charges of armed robbery. A psychological examiner at the time reported that "Robert is a child growing up without any encouragement and support," and that he "has a sense of failure that has infiltrated almost every aspect of his inner self."
In 1993, Sandifer and his siblings were removed from his grandmother's home and were sent to the Lawrence Hall DCFS shelter on Chicago's North Side, from which Sandifer ran away and never returned. From 1993 until his death, Sandifer's whereabouts and living arrangements remain unclear, although he continued to be arrested by the authorities.
On August 28, 1994, Sandifer was ordered to do a favor for his gang. He opened fire several times with a 9-millimeter semiautomatic pistol, striking several youths. Sandifer quickly fled the scene. Among his victims was a 14-year-old girl, Shavon Dean, who was fatally hit by a stray bullet.
After the shooting, the police were looking for Sandifer who was hiding with gang members in the neighborhood. On August 31, while standing on a neighbor's porch after asking to call his grandmother, Sandifer was met by brothers Cragg and Derrick Hardaway, ages 16 and 14, who were both members of the Black Disciples street gang. Sandifer was told he was being taken to a safe location out of town and ordered into a waiting car.
Instead, he was taken to a railroad underpass at East 108th Street and South Dauphin Avenue and told to get on his knees. While kneeling, Sandifer was shot twice in the back of the head by the Hardaway brothers. Sandifer's body was discovered by the Chicago Police Department in the early morning of September 1.
Around 400 people attended Sandifer's funeral, which was held at the Youth Center Church of God in Christ on Chicago's Northwest Side.
The Hardaway brothers were later convicted of Sandifer's murder. Derrick received a 45-year sentence and Cragg received a 60-year sentence. Derrick was released from prison in December 2016. Cragg was released from prison in December 2020.

Very sad all the way around. Rest in Peace Shavon, Barbara Harris & that little lost guy Yummy. Sad to see how lost some of our children are. Makes you wonder where humanity went so wrong. I grew up as a Kid in Chicago, in another rough area (Cabrini-Green). I remember very well this entire "event". Local news covered it for months. Yummy didn't have a chance. The streets raised him. One of my brothers was a BD. I really feel sorry for Shavon's family too. I was 2 years older than Shavon (when this happened).
His casket was open and widely seen on many TV stations. Before I left Chicago, I lived in Roseland. Very very sad place for a kid to grow up (if they get a chance, as many don't). I was 9 years old, when I went to my first funeral, in Chicago. The funeral was for a 12 year old girl. Caught in Chicago's Gang violence. I was 7 years old and Men were trying to sleep with me, in Cabrini-Green.
I had an upbringing similar to Yummy. Group Homes are not always good. I was in many Homes (Foster and Group). There was a case where the Foster Parents abused and killed the foster kids. This was in the late 80s (when I was a Ward). I too stayed at Lawrence Hall. Too many Wards of the State there. It can be like a "low level" prison. Very "clique-ish" like Street Gangs. Fights all the time.
I'm on here today but I still have trauma. Counseling is like a band-aid. I'm scarred for life. I NEVER could commit in a relationship. NEVER had kids. I can say, my environment ruined me early on. I am grateful that I made it out and don't have ANY problems with the law.
    I appreciate the upload!

This is where so many are let down by ruthless people in power(who don't care and shouldn't be in power ) this has to change as this is all caused by greedy uncaring leaders. People with security and opportunities rarely end up this way and each and everyone of us deserve both.

This is a true tragedy. No one loved Yummy enough to have a photograph of him, other than a mug shot? That is mind boggling to me and it is so fundamentally sad, not even a gravestone for him. I do not condone his actions, but he was homeless from 8 years old and took the life of Shavon when aged only 11 years old. I feel desperately sorry for Shavon and her family lose a beloved daughter at 14 years old is truly terrible. Thank you for telling this story.

Yummy was a victim too. All around tragedy for both of those children. That boy’s family didn’t give a damn about him AT ALL and his grave still being unmarked after all these years reinforces that fact! Neglected and abused his whole short life. The grandmother sure put on a show for the cameras in 94, his mom and aunt were defensive and clearly couldn’t care less. His story has been altered and changed, some things added on or excluded so much since 1994. I’m glad you included the facts

Not his mother, father & grandmother, not the System not law Enforcement, not the Judicial System, not DCCF & certainly not the Gang to which he thought he belonged. To his victim, at 14 just starting to find out who she was & gunned down, innocent & afraid. There are no words to express how any mother would feel having her daughter taken by violence.

Is there anything we can do to help get him a headstone? I remember this case well. I'm from the Chicagoland area, but moved to Houston at 6. I visited home every summer and I had just left the city for Houston 2 days before Shavon's death. I had family living on the same block as her mom, so I knew her from playing with my cousins because she was their good friend. I'd seen Yummy around too. Always tattered, dirty and hungry all the time. Shavon and I are the same age (she was about 3-4 months older than me). I'm 42.
But both are victims to me. Shavon is Yummy's victim. But Yummy was failed from birth. He never had a chance! I can remember my aunt feeding him all the time. His grandmother had upwards of 20 kids living in her home at once! She couldn't keep an eye on him or keep him out of trouble. It was horrible!!! I feel for him just as much as Shavon. But it's definitely a sad situation all around.
I understand your feelings towards Yummy. But I have sympathy for him because I saw him. He was just a small kid, both literally and figuratively. He was pressured into the shooting that caused Shavon's death.

But I can still see him asking me for my Jay's HotStuff potato chips I was eating on the front steps of my aunt's house the last time I saw him. He was wearing a green Ninja Turtles t-shirt and jean shorts and raggedy tennis shoes from Payless. All too big and dirty. But he really was a sweet kid. He just didn't have guidance. I would always give him some money I had to go get an Italian Beef sandwich and a pop from the shop around the corner from my aunt's house. I was fortunate and raised middle class so I always had at least $10 in my pocket (which went a long way in the early 90s) and I was always taught by my mom to share it with my friends and those in need. I considered him both. He was almost like another little cousin because he was around my little cousins so much. They were the same age. But my cousins had their parents to teach them how to be a good person. Yummy really had no one. I'm not trying to condone anything he did. He was wrong for shooting Shavon! BUT...I understand the circumstances that led to it. He really was just looking for a family. And he'd latch on to the neighbors who showed him any attention. He was basically living in the neighborhood at friends houses the last year of his life. At 10-11 years old. Imagine being homeless and on your own for the most part at 10. He was just as much a victim as Shavon. I don't think he really understood what we did until Cragg took him off the porch and he and his brother took him into that tunnel.

You see we will all stand and face judgement. That being said, God will NOT be taking polls or opinions on what you think another person did or should have done.

The saddest, sad thing is the culture and moms that have raised generations like this boy. And if you have eyes and ears you know it's just getting worse and more prevalent. Every other one is evolving and progressing and improving their station. Except for... That should be the story and the focus. Pretending something doesn't exist does not mean it doesn't. Crying and wringing hands about nonsense only helps facilitate the cultural rot.

This case has bothered me for many years since I heard about it about 12 years ago. I'm too conflicted because he took a life. Yummy did not stand a chance in this society. He should have been protected and comforted at home, but he was abused regularly. Where else could he turn at 11 years old? 11 years old? The system COMPLETELY failed him. HE NEVER STOOD A CHANCE with his mother or grandmother. There was no way he could get the necessary guidance with more than 20 kids in the house. Such a sad story.

A tragic story, victims on both sides. It's such a damn shame that we keep losing our kids, youth, to gangs, random acts of violence, neglect, and abuse. Kids are never asked to be born into this world, but to have them abused, neglected, tossed away like yesterdays newspaper, abandoned, only for them to fall victim to gangs. As a former youth leader for my church, my heart goes out to both of these two kids. My thoughts and prayers go out to their families. Again, such a tragic story. Scott, this is one of the saddest stories I have ever heard. I could hear the sadness and empathy in your voice. I lost it when you placed the hot wheels car on Barbara's grave for Yummy because she is "watching over Yummy". 😥😥Ty for bringing this story to us. It had to be very difficult for you to tell the story as it was for us to hear about it. RIP Yummy, Shavon. 😥😥🙏🙏

I remember this so clearly. I was pregnant with my daughters and delivered them a few weeks before Yummy's death. I will never forget him.

I know his sister Lorina McGrew. She lives here in Louisville, Ky. You should get an interview with her if you are ever in town.

I was able to reach her. She is actually working with someone now on a documentary so unfortunately she can't do any other interviews I guess because of their agreement. But feel free to reach her on facebook maybe she will change her mind.
