@@JS-uw1pr but at one point they where wanna be tough guys... You don't just become tough in an instance, you have to want it then you become what you want to be if you have the mentality. If someone tougher than them comes around then they want to show that he is tougher than the other dude. Everyone human has emotions and getting scared is one of them. Just because you don't show it doesn't mean you don't get scared. So the statement is true. Even the tough guys will say it, mabey not to everyone but they will tell you if they want to

It’s kinda insane than in a facility meant for rehabilitation, you may be forced to do something that can put you away for life and if you resist, it may literally cost you your life. There’s too much money being made from private prisons for this to be possible.

Hello Big Herc, Let me clear up something you asked about in this video. Garrett mentions an inmate called "Bonzai Bob" who was in for a car jacking and ended up with the death penalty! I was in Arizona at the time it happened. The inmate was Robert Vickers. He was small, and about 19, if I recall correctly. His celly was a convicted murderer. They had a disagreement and the celly said he was going to kill Bob. Either that night or soon after, Bob killed him in his sleep, then carved his name or something on the guys back. Bob said that with that guy, it was either kill or be killed! He thought the carving would make him appear tough and people would leave him alone. i don't remember if there were others he attacked, but he ended up on death row.

Dudes story sounds a bit like mine. When you’re young drugs, money, women, respect, that life is the ultimate lure for a young man who doesn’t know any better. You go in at 20-21 years old and realize how bad you F”d everything off. You realize those dudes aren’t playing, you go in a boy basically around a bunch of thirsty wolves and society wonders why dudes come out messed up. Never been in and I know I'm not missing anything in there. I once heard a veteran inmate with 45 years say, "You can do hard time or you can do smooth time." The smoothest time there is - out here taking care of you and yours handling legitimate business. This interveiw confirms that. Thank you for all you do and being a voice of reason amidst all the chaos.

I piloted a substance use program in the Jails in Buffalo, NY. It's a great program that allowed us to address substance use so that we could work with them once they were released. We could do daily groups and individual sessions. Also, door to door from jail to an outpatient clinic or inpatient treatment. I absolutely loved doing counseling in the jails. But what this man said about laws and changes for people like him - he's right. We were shielded from the hardcore people and we never even saw them. The program was for level inmates and was very laid back. We were able to reach a lot of people inside to help them get themselves together outside....but only the low level folks.

Hey herc, hope all is well with you. My middle brother(I'm the oldest) is doing 25 to life in California(down from 75 to life). He was shot up in 07 and after multiple surgeries to stop bleeding and sepsis and a coma, he barely survived. 2 years later, he caught a case. He has a colostomy bag to this day, big California zipper and all the bullet hole scars and even after all that, it only made him more of a nut. He's in pelican bay now up in the SHU and is a real one now in la EME. He's only 31(about to be 32) and all I have to say is that in his case, his mentality has always been down for anything, anytime and not so smart and that's the reason why now he's up there calling shots. Cause though crime is dumb, he's learned to be smart at criminal sh*t in there. I was always down too and at 11 I was shot myself and barely made it after surgery(California zipper). My mentality changed until I was 20 and my son was born. Him being born snapped me out of it and I'm thankful for that, because I was doing real dirt and could have caught a case or get dusted. Some fools just have that mentality, but it isn't enough. You need to have certain qualities like the ability to keep your word, use people and know how to read people and how to act and navigate to achieve what you want. Friendly when needed, but heartless when time calls. I'm like that in a sense in that at work, people gravitate towards me and I'm pretty good at reading fools. Never speaking on someone's business and for whatever reason, fools tell me a lot of stuff. I build rapport with people pretty well. At work it makes my life easier and co workers are down to do me solids, no questions asked. I respect all, but trust none, not ever being a pos or f*cking someone over. I'm glad I took a different path in life, but even outside, I feel there are those few individuals that if faced with prison, can have the potential to lead and be a shot caller.

Never been in prison. Never been a g. University-educated, serving in the Canadian military. There's a lot of great points here raised by both dudes about what is tough, what is a gangsta, what is a man ? The idea of redefining all that to something more true is critical.
Question though is this: you have both outlined how the system is setup for the kind of failure that you have experienced as inmates. How for example though, do you be your own man when you're in a car ? I guess the answer is you don't. You be your own man by not getting into the kind of shit that will lead you to prison. Once there, seems like it's more question of riding in the car while avoiding any unnecessary violence (some is essential where its about your rep).

I know nothing about the system, but i have a friend that once in a while trys to explain to me how it is/was for him. He actually told me that "shot caller" is the closest movie he has seen, to showing how prison really is.
