I remember when that book came out my cousin John was like, "they should have called it 'how to be a Dungeonmaster.'" I still have my copy because it is just THAT good.
I have this book but it’s been a while since I looked at it. I am going to have to pull it off the shelf and give it a read. On another note I was at Shirecon and it was my first con. I had a great time.
Good refresher on the existence of this book, and I needed it! I never bought any of the 2e books when they came out, mostly just flipped through them in the bookstore. Some of those sourcebooks were pretty interesting. I recognized the Morrissey as the cover to _Dragon_ #84 right off; I had a subscription when it came out. Didn't recognize the other one as a _Dragon_ cover, but definitely could have been. Cheers!
Thanks for covering this. It had fallen off my radar in all the years so it's great to see it again. I'm going to add it to my list of old books to pick up.
Well, you are directly responsible for at least one eBay purchase today! Thank you for pointing out this book - I had the PDF, but the physical was a must! Great video!
As a practical guide on the non-rules aspect of DM'ing/GM'ing any RPG, this book is excellent. I know that when I began DM'ing, I was flustered by the mountain of rules I thought I had to memorize, but the people side of DM'ing was even more challenging to learn, and to navigate, successfully. This book is really quite good. It complements the X-D-M book, nicely. It really deserves more circulation, more readers. It is worth its weight in gemstones (greater value, by weight, than GP...), Baby! Cheers!
Another book I highly recommend is "Rifts - Adventure Guide" by Kevin Siembieda. Similar to this one, it gives advice on how to be a D/GM, as well as how to create and run adventures. And while it is written for the Palladium game engine, the material can be applied to any RPG.
I liked this, but it IMHO should have been part of the DMG. One of the biggest complaints of the 2e DMG compared to the 1e one is the 1e one had tons of advice and tips, the 2e one got rid of all of that, presumably, to sell the Accessories sourcebooks.
Is etiquette still an understood concept? "Gaming etiquette", what a nostalgic notion! And some people wonder why the old school game should appeal to those who remember - maybe etiquette? Maybe a lot of things? Wishing you all the best on the new year! 👍
Heard of it... Read it. Bought the original back in the day, when it first came out. It's in my collection today, with all the other 2e "splat books." And FYI, That reads, _"Paul Jaquays,"_ and you know it. Stop affirming his mental illness!

It’s so system agnostic that it’s an evergreen book basically
Belive it or not alotmof this was first covered in the TOP SECRET SI Administrators guidebook.
All great stuff.
Good luck on that 1 video a day
@@shadowandson3550 thanks!

Awesome! Say hi if you’re there next year. :)
@ will do! Are running games at the next one?
@ I’m pretty sure I will be. 👍

I still have my copy. It's a great book
Still have mine too! Excellent resource!
I thought this was going to be about Tim :) Good video.
lol thanks man
That’s one of my favourite books. I love the funny gaming scripts in it.
It’s very well written. The humor adds to it. There’s not enough of that in rpg books these days
Great video, Joe. This book was a gem from the 2e era.
Thanks!!It's a shame more people don't know about it.

@@Joethelawyer second eBay purchase you caused today.

@@sgt-slag exactly. Especially since we rpg geeks tend to lack some of the finer social graces, to put it nicely. Some things aren’t intuitive
Now I wonder if I have a copy of this around the house. I probably bought it, but was almost 35 years of moves, pets, and life ago. Good find!
If not it’s not expensive I don’t think.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome!! Enjoy!
Got this back when I first saw it on the shelves soon after 2nd edition launched. Definitely the best source book/tips book I have in my collection.
The bad name is probably why I never paid it any attention

Excellent!! I’ll see if I can’t find a copy. Thanks!
Great video! I’m going to try to track this book down.
Awesome!
Love the blue cover one word book series. They were dense and had lots of good information.
never heard of them. have a link or something?
Just tracked down a PDF copy. It's looking good so far. I'll keep an eye out for a physical copy without crazy postage charges.
Good luck!
I have this book it’s great
@@idian100 I use it for material for these videos I’m doing now

I did have this book back in the day. There's almost NOTHING from 2e that I didnt have.
I could t afford most of it back then. College years. Was mostly broke
I still got mine.
And I bet you can open it up today and still glean some wisdom from it
It could have - should have - replaced any part of the 2e DMG!! 😆
Agreed!

FYI, it sounds like you have a mental illness, you might wanna see a shrink, or take your pills.
