Did you notice that the sergeant's backpack was missing after the Dreadnought exploded? That means that he ran up that hill with this Power Armour unpowered, what a badass.
Never noticed that before, but now it makes sense why he was only moving as fast as the average human. Before, I couldn't help thinking, "What in hell was able to fuck his legs up? His bones are made of ceramite, for fuck's sake!" I do have to question, though, just how a random shoota was able to send a round through him and his armor, backpack or no. To top it off, it's not just one random shoota, but two. I mean, most if not all of the suit is made out of ceramite, one of the most durable materials mankind has at its disposal. There are very few weakspots, most of which are covered by more pieces of armor. What's more, both rounds seemed to go through the pauldrons.
I always find it hilarious how many space marines you lose in these games. If 40k was like these games you'd lose entire chapters trying to clear out a small forest.
I think the justification is that 90% of the marines who are "killed" in a typical game of 40k can be stood back up, replace a few pieces of their armor, and get back into the fray within a day or so, whereas guardsmen, tyranids etc. are usually killed outright by a solid hit.
Zak Thackwray I was talking about the Sergeant screaming *"AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHH!!!"* and leading a pointless charge uphill to get into cqb with a mob of Orks.
SinDawg030 I think the sergeant is doing what a comman captain would do, doing a victory charge, however, loads of Greenskin are behind cover, guess the Orks do know some form of strategy! By the time the ork charge is too late to call off the attack.
Killian Billian If I were him, I would have bunkered down in cover with the dreadnought, held off the Orks from the position of strength and wait for the fucking reinforcements to arrive BEFORE claiming the hill in the name of the Chapter and the Emperor.
For Blood Ravens, is totally practical, but the trailer would look less awesome! If you are part of Space Wolves, White Scars or the crazy Black Templar, that would be unacceptable. You are to charge even if you are alone, naked and wield a pencil!
SinDawg030 well the sergeant needs to put the flag up since its probably a beacon, before reinforcements would arrive, and it indicates that the area is swept off of Anti-air which can blow those reinforcements to pieces.
This has aged so well. Still among the best game intro's ever imo. It captures everything about the setting so well, both the ridiculous meme and the brutal serious side.
Holy shit. I remember when I was 14 years old (somewhere about 2008) my parents bought me this game, 'cause they knew that I was into rts games (I mostly played Age of Empires II, Rise of Nations, and Warcraft). It was quite cheap for it was on some kind of discount, during that time I've never heard of the WH40k series, so when they gave it to me I was like "meh, I'll check it out, but I've got plenty of other rts games to play, so I doubt that I will like it more than AoE". After I installed it and saw this intro, I was completely overwhelmed. I sat there in the menu for few minutes with my mouth opened. Then I thought to myself "Man, this will be good." Then I always watched this intro before my every session of playing. I've watched it so many times that I knew it all by heart, and fell completely in love with the WH40k universe. I was amazed when I've heard that units shout at each other during battles (not only when I click them), and when I saw the finishing animations during melee I was like "of shieeet there is so many little details!". This game've completely changed the way I was looking at strategy games. Today I am a proud DoW player, and in my opinion it is the best rts series ever made. Of course there is also great Company of Heroes, but Relic first started with this masterpiece. For the glory of the Emperor, fellow brothers!

I became a man... no angst, just awesome... and here I am eight years later, neck deep in WH40k books and half painted figures... good purchase, middle school me, good purchase.
I learned about WH40k when in last class of junior school, saw this game's review on a magazine. At first i didn't like it "Wtf is this, they're in future and they have swords ? Ork soldiers look so stupid !" about 9 years later i became a fan of the lore in general :P

I was first introduced to Warhammer 40K through the adventure boardgame, Space Crusade, a kind of cross between DnD and Space Hulk aimed at younger players and has the distiction of being the only Games Workshop product to have had a TV advert.

But thanks to Dawn of War I realy noticed Warhammer 40k - Now I know a lot of things about this universe, have couple of books about Taniiths First and Only. 2020 and I'm still watching this. Best cinematic ever. Only cinematic where the characters are heroic size and actually look like the models we build and paint.
seacore181 I was talking about the Blood Ravens, not the Blood Angels. The Blood Ravens are the descendants of the Corvidae Fellowship of the Thousand Sons, led by Revuel Arvida, it was he who coined the Chapter's old motto "Knowledge is powerful, guard it well". When the Corvidae remained loyal, they became the Blood Ravens, And Revuel Arvida changed his name to Azariah Vidya. They hid their past as Thousand Sons in Kronus. Davian found out and destroyed everything he found there to make sure the Inquisition did not pursue them for their past.
oh ok, i see, im wrong, i ever thought, they were decent from the blood angels, were can i read about that? in the german wiki is not much info about that
I think this will always be the best game trailer of all time. There are plenty of excellent ones, but none combines the excitement, drama, vicious battle scenes and amazing music of Dawn of War. The Sergeant giving his life to take the objective is incredibly inspiring and it simply finishes off this work of perfection.
still not happy with how easily this cinematic let that dreadnaught go down, it should have stood back up, minus an arm and a chunk of shoulder, and charged the orcs line while the captain made his way up the hill, then gone toe to toe with an orc warboss, and spent a good bit slugging it out with him, left him plenty worse for wear, and nearly get finished by the warboss, only to have the captain charge in, and slice the boss's head from his body with his chainsword, this intro just doesnt do the marines justice
Neither does the gameplay in the tabletop game. Believe it or not but some people like the Orks and it wouldn't be fair if this was about the Marines totally roflstomping the greenskins in a rampage of haetraep and fury. Gotta let them get some shots in. Besides, assuming that the bald sergeant is Boreale then this explains how his staggering tactical incompetence got noticed by Kyras who then promoted him to cause as much damage to the Chapter as possible and why his voice is so fucked up.
SinDawg030 I know this comment is old, but it sorta hits the nail on the head. That guy doesn't recognize that there are people, myself included, who are actually fans of the Orks. If they didn't win anything, or didn't do anything cool or epic, 40k would mostly be a disappointing bore to me. PLUS: Table-top Orks are epic, man. (:
LostRequiem777 I remember I once saw a friend of mine playing as Orks against a Space Marine player. There was this Dreadnought that was chewing up Orks left and right and when it came to a single gretchin, the last survivor of an entire mob, the gretchin took a shot with his shitty little revolver (the kind that makes a Lasgun look like a killing machine), rolled the dice and the Dreadnought promptly keeled over just as it was about to squish the little bastard underfoot. Much laughs were had that day.
SinDawg030 sorry to bother you, but since you looked like the guy who know a bit about warhammer 40k lore, may I ask in what event does Boreale's incompetence shows?
Benoo Perkasa Popular fan theory among Dawn of War/40k fans assumes that the bald Blood Ravens sergeant in this cinematic is Boreale in his days as a sergeant. The corroborating "evidence" being that he showed tactical incompetence (not waiting for the reiforcements to arrive), overconfidence (charging uphill to get in combat with a mob of Orks when they still had strong defensive positions and firepower) and that the ork projectile that brought him down could have hit him in the throat hence the lulztastic voice acting we got in Soulstorm. Also it makes sense that Kyras would put an imbecile like Boreale in command of three whole companies and send them off to the Kaurava campaign in order to do as much damage to the Blood Ravens as possible in order to aid his greater schemes.
Dreadnaught gets destroyed. Only surviving Sergeant takes upon himself to grab not a weapon, but the company standard. Climbs to the hill they assaulted as a tactical squad with devastator support. Gets shot once in the shoulder, falls over and plants flag. Dies. Refuses to elaborate. 40k Ladies and Gentlemen.
Well, maybe that Iron Harvest cinematic trailer, but it is basically 1920+ version of this and, as I said, its not an intro, but a trailer (buggers my brain why didnt they add it as an intro to the game already).
All those years ago, this beyond merely awesome video was making my mind ripple with sheer thrill, excitement and inspiration. Today, it still does that.
Anyone else feel like this animation style would be amazing for a movie? Like you can kinda see the age in it but it doesn't mean it looks bad. Definitely looks better than some of the new marvel stuff and this is just a trailer for a 04 rts!
I love this. It's beautifully done! It dispalys well with the sergeant kinda overwhelmed by everything that's going on, but he none the less tries to get the job done.
I wish they'd make a dawn of war 3 but go back to the basic format, I like building big ass bases and culminating a huge army. especially with the ultimate apocalypse mod.
See how they are literally shooting like shit (it's like the whole squad is at BS),they may as well charge. Still wondering why they brought the Devastator with them tho.
That One Random Gamer Or maybe the dice gods were just fucking the Space Marine player over and he didn't feel like taking an Ork charge head on. I think the devastator was just a heavy weapons guy in a squad.
This has got to be the best video game intro of all time. I remember I watched this for the time, and fully reflected my life. All the countless space marine models I had let die on the tabletop. I realised at that moment in the Dark twisted world of the 40k universe there is only war.
in a tactical point of thinking, charging the enemy that is literally right infront of you while you have a good defensive position is a dumb move. In terms of looking badass, it's a very good move.
This is a really weird detail to notice, but the grunts and hurt sounds that come from the Orks and Space Marines are switched from who they come from in the game itself. Like the Orks make the Space Marine grunts and vis a vis in the intro.
Space Marines are uber-humans in lore. Handful of them could kill thousands of orks. Those guys fight their best when they are outnumbered . :D But now implement it in a RTS. It would be sad for all those ork players. You want to feel some of their true power? Play Space Marine or DoW 2 where few squads rape whole armies.
this game is so awesome. Surely, they know knew how to make battles epic and units unforgettable. Everything is perfect, graphics, audio, story, gameplay. A really really good game.
As a cinematic it is amazing, but it made the space marines look expendable as fuck. The entire campaign follows a single company (about 100 marines). I fthey were dying like this scene there would be no marines left at the end of mission 1. Also, the number of drop pods falling at the end is very high. It looks like an entire chapter is dropping at the war zone. Since this game was my "first contact" with the 40k universe it gave me the wrong impression of the size and value-per-unit of a space marine company. Perhaps nitpicking, i know, but I am always in for lore accuracy. If you want scale throw an entire chapter in the fray and unleah mayhem.
Γιάννης Νικολάου while I am against those foolish heretics, what with there false gods and demented rituals, they are the military equivalent of a steam roller, and do not stop until either the enemy is dead or they are
After many years this is still my all time FAVORITE game intro! You can feel that shoulder hit at the end! love it! So many SC II and CC fans have know Idea how much better DOW was ...way better!
so they lost a predator, a dreadnought (irreplaceable) and what looks like an entire tactical squad. and they didnt even manage to beat a mob of orks. 2tactical4me
This is the most EPIC thing ive ever seen! especially the part when he dies as he puts up the flag..just gives me chills, best intro ever warhammer 40k FTW!
Somebody out there must have a proper HD version of this. Nonetheless 9.5/10, I must've watched this a hundred times. Truly one of the great intro cinematics of all gaming. You figure protecting the dreadnaught's blind spots would priority one, two, three, four and five but what do I know.

I don't remember where the Codex Astartes recommends "ARRRRGGH!" as a tactical instruction.

This Intro shows how much epicness you can put into 2 minutes
"Skip the intro!"
*"Nah, not this one, Bro."*
0:35 A shout that puts to shame the standard WAAAAAGH! and clips the sound parameters of existence as we know it.
Best intro ever.
still not happy with how easily this cinematic let that dreadnaught go down, it should have stood back up, minus an arm and a chunk of shoulder, and charged the orcs line while the captain made his way up the hill, then gone toe to toe with an orc warboss, and spent a good bit slugging it out with him, left him plenty worse for wear, and nearly get finished by the warboss, only to have the captain charge in, and slice the boss's head from his body with his chainsword, this intro just doesnt do the marines justice
40k Ladies and Gentlemen.
still the best videogame intro ever... even after 15 years
Well, maybe that Iron Harvest cinematic trailer, but it is basically 1920+ version of this and, as I said, its not an intro, but a trailer (buggers my brain why didnt they add it as an intro to the game already).
All those years ago, this beyond merely awesome video was making my mind ripple with sheer thrill, excitement and inspiration.
Today, it still does that.
1:30
That's why you should wear a freakin' helmet!
There’s a reason Gabriel Angelo’s said running head first into the orks would be madness
Ahh old good times, I need more RTS like this one!
Was feeling nostalgic and this video still looks great even after all these years
So it's been 10 years... God i'm too old
15 now. You're welcome.
17
That yell will never stop giving the chills. Perfect
Meanwhile the orks are having the best time of their lives
To this day one of the greatest video game cinematics ever made. Always takes me back to those early 2000's days...
0:25-0:40
The single most glorious, most awe-inspiring moment in gaming history.
And I dont think thats going to change anytime soon.
I loved how i used to love this intro for about 4 years ago when i first played it.
I still love it.
Orc at 0:43 like*Al raigt, now it´z get´n fuuun Booooooyzzz!*
Damn this clip I saw at university in 2006. Here I am decades later back! Grown up lol
P.e teacher: today we are going to have a ultimite dogeball war.
Girl: oh great.
Me and the boys: 0:34
I've watched this intro so many damn times, and its still awesome. Brings back good memories. Even in death I still serve!!
0:34 *AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA* - The Ultrachad Blood Raven Leiuteinant
6 years old and I still get goosebumps.
I wish they'd make a dawn of war 3 but go back to the basic format, I like building big ass bases and culminating a huge army. especially with the ultimate apocalypse mod.
Damn dis video is 17 yrs. Like my childhood became adulthood.
still trying to understand the meaning of that charge
ikr
I think they had to mark the hill with that flag.
Because the Orks would have gotten 4 strength 4 attacks each due to +1 on the charge and +1 hammer of wrath, duh.
I think the devastator was just a heavy weapons guy in a squad.
still love the dreadnought stepping out and revving up that assault cannon!!!!!
And how he mops the entire hill in like 1.5 seconds. Like completely swipe it. No fanciness, just sheer brutality
I wonder what happened to the battle brother that was stuck on the roof of the flight control tower.
Can't believe this came out a decade ago, and it's still awesome.
01:02 That ork needed that back adjustment lol
This has got to be the best video game intro of all time. I remember I watched this for the time, and fully reflected my life. All the countless space marine models I had let die on the tabletop. I realised at that moment in the Dark twisted world of the 40k universe there is only war.
The rule of fighting orks
Don't run into melee range like a bunch of dumbasses
Even if it does look badass as shit
This just shouts out nostalgia to me so much, and I love it.
EPIC !!!!!!! 100%
God I will never get tired of this fucking cinematic EVER!!!!!
Space Marine Logic: We have a defensive position with superior ranged weapons... CHARGE EM ANYWAY! What untactical badasses
It's kinda important to counter-attack the enemy.
in a tactical point of thinking, charging the enemy that is literally right infront of you while you have a good defensive position is a dumb move. In terms of looking badass, it's a very good move.
ChromiteHertz They lost a tank in the first ten seconds whilst dug in. They had to charge in to get that piece of turf because Objective Secured.
Jdtheepic
bleh, the imperium does have a penchant for impatience, otherwise that same objective could've been secured with much less casualties.
Patrick Bigwood bolters run out of ammo chain swords dont need ammo
This is the best intro video ever. Before multi-game we used to watch it from the begining to the end every time.
Dawn of War just updated and it now uses Steam-integrated multiplayer. People are actually playing the games again.
Praise the Emperor battle brother, battle for dow is not yet done.
Much better than 2 imo
I didn"t expect to see "posted 17 years ago" to hit so freaking hard
0:34 I don't believe it...
You somehow created a scream more idiotic than the Wilhelm.
It's Indrick Boreale, what did you expect?
+TheKatamariguy I think it is fitting for the context. A incomprehensible scream of pure adrenaline.
+Empowerless the testosterone of the scream made me grow a forest of chest hair
+Kraosdada Fusfus its Diomedes
That scream just so happens to be the battlecry of the greatest warrior of all time
SLY MARBO!
Nearly ten years old and it still looks awesome.
0:50 Assault Marines dropping in would have helped a lot. Where were they?
SM didn’t have orbital relay built yet
This is a really weird detail to notice, but the grunts and hurt sounds that come from the Orks and Space Marines are switched from who they come from in the game itself. Like the Orks make the Space Marine grunts and vis a vis in the intro.
Best fucking intro ever
This, is my introduction into the Warhammer 40000 universe, and it was GLORIOUS.
These space marines don't seem too cost effective. Almost 30 of them and a Dreadnought can only take out a hundred orks?
+SlyBiffrons I spied only 1 tac squad
+SlyBiffrons Keep in mind they had a Predator, too. With LASCANNONS. That ain't cheap.
Savire510 Same thing on tabletop.
Get that doubt out of your head brother. Remember; AAAAAAAAAAAGH!
this game is so awesome.
Γιάννης Νικολάου if you want to win, send in the fucking 17th
Why would you want to do anything with these backstabbing lunatics? #BlameLorgar
Γιάννης Νικολάου while I am against those foolish heretics, what with there false gods and demented rituals, they are the military equivalent of a steam roller, and do not stop until either the enemy is dead or they are
Γιάννης Νικολάου also #blamelorgar
the whole chapter? does it include the initiates? i don't know hwo the chapter works =V
2tactical4me
I imagine if they were Ultramarines, the sergeant would have been court-martialed for violating the Codex Astartes, if he survived.
I wish I can go back to the day this game was released..
This is what the US military actually beliefs...
Believing in Warhammer40k?........one could dream.

*AURGHH!*
*AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA*
This is the most EPIC thing ive ever seen! especially the part when he dies as he puts up the flag..just gives me chills, best intro ever warhammer 40k FTW!
0:35 What in the fuck was that?
+blazejames47 WAAAAAAAAAGH!
+blazejames47 I call it the "Squad Commander Death Scream".
Its SLY MARBO!
+Jakov
*IT'S A POSSESSED SPACE MARINE! A FUCKING HERETIC!*
*SPAMS THE EXTERMINATUS BUTTON*
CapMar-Vell92 Returns
*AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*
Somebody out there must have a proper HD version of this. Nonetheless 9.5/10, I must've watched this a hundred times. Truly one of the great intro cinematics of all gaming.
You figure protecting the dreadnaught's blind spots would priority one, two, three, four and five but what do I know.
