This is the idea I've always held to. I'm a storyteller by heart, and a filmmaker by choice. I shake my head when I see "short films" that are just compilations of pretty shots in a beautiful location with cinematic music in the background. Sure, it's attractive, but the talent is wasted! The best things about filmmaking is the influence on society, the perspective provided, and the lives impacted. I am a storyteller before I am a filmmaker, because stories change the world. Elite Lens Films I fucking hate when people put "4K" or "Shot on RED Epic-W" in the titles of their films. All these people care SO much about resolution, but their films have no substance, they're terrible...
can i ask a question? so movies that managed to rake in multi-millions in revenue tells a very good story like titanic, inception and other similar movies?? how come i don't hear about relating story telling to these movies???
Alex I feel the same way. Who cares what camera you filmed with if your story sucks? If you're testing or reviewing the camera, it's fine...but for a narrative short, it's pulling the attention away from the actual film and setting on the visual effects and image quality.
caco ko I'm not sure I understand. Titanic won a bunch of Oscars and is considered a classic. You don't do that with a crappy storyline...could you rephrase your question?

I really appreciate how you talk about filmmaking using different mediums than just cinema. I am a huge Far Side fan, so I really loved this!
In my films, I love to add a hidden parallel or message through visuals that the viewer may or may not notice. I think this is important in shorts because, you only have so much time to get your point across and making a point through visuals makes the content stronger.

I've been writing my whole life...now just getting into short story telling and writing my first novel. One thing short story telling has taught me is that the mind will fill in so many blanks, it's really remarkable. It's amazing to me how much a reader will get from a story I write that is one scene, with two men talking in an office in 500 words. Story is king. Thanks for the video.
This is an incredible lesson about cinematography and is something filmmakers need to keep in mind always. And to add to that, think of cinematography as a viewer, and that EVERY SINGLE SECOND matters. That's when creativity begins.

I really enjoy hearing what you're learning from non-cinematic sources. Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side are two of my all-time favorites.

hi sherlock, the end was about misdirection and surprise. it seemed the person would cut the apple with the knife side, which is the expected side and not the jagged side he ended up using. Surprise!

Simon, this was a brilliant episode and I thank you for posting it. I do think you short changed yourself by missing an opportunity to let your fans help support you. Gary Larson is a great story tiller and I think many of your viewers would be interested in buying this book. You do so much work on this channel to create value for your audience and should expect something in return. At the end of this video you could say "If you are interested in buying this book and want to help support my channel click the affiliate link in the description. It helps a lot, thanks". at a minimum, place a link in the description.
the trouble is that amazon is the best place for that, but I cancelled my amazon affiliate a while ago when I found out all of the ethical issues that I didn't want to support. It's fine, some of my videos are sponsored, some aren't :)

Dankside why would you go out of your way to make a hirtull comment like this? He is not a native English speaker and most of the world understands the struggles that come with living in an English centric world. You don't know his life story yet you feel compelled to point out flaws in others. Perhaps you should turn that attitude back to your self and then maybe you will feel the true distrust power of hertfull comments. Perhaps I have this wrong, you already know pain and want to lash out with the only think you know. I invite you to only speak to bring others up and you will begin to understand the joy of living with compassion.

alex fernandez he is known for always biting into an apple at the end or at one point of a video, but instead of just biting into it, he just cut a slice out. it's his throw, to unpredictability.
It's good to fill a frame with details to dramatize them just like old classic paintings of Davinci and on the reversal, Every Image has an emotion which makes the viewer feel something irrespective of the visual information could be even something very subtle and minimalistic just like a white screen,which may make you feel calm and red screen kinda disturbed at end it is what we feel, the film is about, an empathy creating machine.Thing is, we never knew,our feelings are unpredictable to different information.
I think the reason for storys and conflicts being less in focus than visuels in shortfilms, is that as someone who starts making movies you have a limit to what is possible and also makes sence and fits together.
Great video, telling a story and allowing the consumer to tell it at their pace.
