Pay too much attention to the name on the headstock or amp and you might never find that tone you’re chasing. I always thought strats were cooler than teles, (Hendrix, SRV, Buddy Holly, David Gilmour….etc), but playing my tele through a Marshall using the bridge pickup is exactly how I want to sound. 🎸

    • @WithCarePlz

Disagree. Construction makes a big difference. I’m gonna use Gibson for an example. I have an epiphone les paul custom 1 piece mahogany with ebony fretboard, 5 layer binding, brass hardware, etc.
all over the internet you can find people stating that people who buy Gibsons are dumb, and that this epiphone is better.
      Shit cracks me tf up.
Epihones are made in china. Look. This is a super nice guitar. Super nice. But if you say it’s nicer than a standard- you’ve never played a good gibson standard… sorry. It’s a fact.
I was shocked at the difference in a gibsons feel. Sound was close, with this epi at least. It does the les paul thing for sure. It sounds great and looks great. But pearl or no pearl it says Epiphone.
Now. Gibson specifically as a brand. They are as American as Ford or Harley Davidson used to be. They are a 100+ year old american owned hand maker of instruments. There is more than a name making the guitars different. Gibson guitars feel so much more premium. Also there’s a pride some people take in wanting a gibson their whole life and then finally popping the latches on that case. That magic is real. If I could bottle that feeling and sell it I would.
If you are a new player or a budget player absolutely you can’t go wrong with an Epiphone. But if you take pride in a classic famous handmade world renowned american symbol of rock and roll and you value the brand and the marginal improvement in quality of buying the Gibson? It’s gotta be a Gibson for me. And when you get on stage confidence is about the most important tool in your toolbox. And believe it or not people in the audience absolutely Know who Gibson and Fender are and their eyes are going straight to that headstock to find it. That’s a fact. Call it whatever you wanna call it but I’m gonna go on stage with Ameican gibson les pauls and crappy dollar store Fender strats just like my heros did. Jk fender guys. Sorta. They do feel cheap, even the nice ones. Maple? That crap’s in my yard.

@@WithCarePlz I think we agree. What I meant when I said that you shouldn’t pay too much attention to the name on the headstock or amp was that you might have to give a different type of guitar or amp a chance when you’re searching for that, “tone”in your head. Maybe the reason why someone can’t quite find the tone they want is because they’re trying to get it from gear that just can’t give it. Good luck getting your strat/ into a Fender twin reverb to sound like a Les Paul into a Marshall. Craftsmanship counts and so do materials, but if you have amazing gear and can’t quite get that sound you’re looking for, get different (amazing is still fine) gear.

You had me when you mentioned Clapton and Hendrix. I was just listening to Clapton's "Let It Rain" yesterday. That guitar solo, in my humble opinion, is his GOAT. I think he was still in his throws of heroin addiction. Saw Hendrix at the Waikiki Shell circa May 1969. It was an outdoor concert at night and it was freaking magical. One guy seems to always get left out of the conversation is Johnny Winters...a guitar phenom

SG, LP on my beloved Peavey Classic -92 50 212 is a fantastic combo. Marshalls I have owned, like JTM 2204, DSL40C , Vintage Modern 50W also have been favourites

I became a Jackson fanboy when I saw a poster of Dave Mustaine with a Jackson headstock, when I was 15 years old. Those guitars were just the absolute business back then. Maybe you knew some guy who had one, and he was the guy in the band that was making tons of money, but you were never going to have one. I eventually picked up a Jackson knock-off, then a Jackson Japanese import model, and since then I've just been used to the feel of them - I like what I like so when it's time for a new guitar, I just get one more.

Hard not to be a fender fan boy. They make so many cool guitars, bass guitars, and amps, and they have some cool effects too. They have cool stuff for all price points and the history of the company is interesting too!

I was going to buy a fender strat when I was 14... and then walked out with a used Gibson SG that turned out to be a low-key gem and I've been a Gibson guy ever since.
Even despite the company becoming a "lifestyle" brand to try to appease the venture capitalist vultures and the quality going down...I still see them as a massive status symbol, even though I know it's not a substantial measure of a great guitar.
    I still love Gibson.
SGs and V's and the ES-175
    I love them

I'm a Fan boy of Fender. I really dig that brand in general. I get a straight laced model anything from em, amd I'm in heaven. Why? I've had all the models and collected them for decades, because to me they are home. I forgot to mention originally, that Fender, when you take it from guitar to amp are both Fender, they sound amazing every single time. No other company to me,arrives their equipment lines so well. This above all is why I desire their wares much more than other brands, not that some brands aren't also my liking. Reverend, Gretsch, Guild all come to mind.

I saw Steve Cropper playing Soul Man behind the Blues Brothers on SNL as a kid and he just looked so cool and at that moment I had to have a Tele. A friend of my dad had a Tele and let me "play" his and I was hooked. Problem was it was the70's and the only thing available locally were plywood Les Paul copies. I was able to get a friend to spend a day searching stores and Pawn shops in Jacksonville Fl for a Tele, but we never found one. I settled on a used Stratocaster and Vibro-Champ. My wife bought me my first Gibson, a Les Paul, in '04. Now I have that bug too.

I’m a anGibson Fanboy, but I love Fenders as well, it’s just that my 2 strays are warmoth custom-made modern iterations of a stray that I built myself.
If I was a better luthier, I’d be building my own Gibsons, but it’s out of my skill range at this point.
Set-neck guitars are was less practical for an smearier to build from scratch.
Building the warmoth guitars did, however, teach me a TON about how guitars can be assembled. As a result, I nodded out one of my Gibsons and spec’d it to my taste.

It is fun and I’m learning a lot. I have a grandson who just turned 14. I have a thing for buying used . Not amps but guitars, so I found a1998 fiesta red Mexican strat for him. I wonder if they like Strats? From the wall behind….
I am a massive Fender fanboy. I think it is the lore behind them. There was a Leo Fender, there was a man you could attach your “legend making” when you are young. There was an entire mythology around Fender.
My first guitar that was configured like the ones I saw on TV (switches in the correct place and had a recognisable shape) was a white non-name strat. I was I had kept it. I got in it 1979 and it was old then. I would love to take it look inside and see how it was made (with what I know now).

I'm more of a gibson fan really les pauls, 355's, firebirds but the one thing fender can always win me over is a telecaster, probably because in terms of pickup versatility they are no.1 really especially double bound tele's get me weak at the knees. other than that Les Pauls were what I grew up viewing as magic and as soon as I got my les paul standard unburst (luckily escaped the stinkers of the previous owner) I instantly fell in love with that guitar and use it to record most my music.

My current Strat I've owned for 30 yrs almost. Got a Les Paul finally about 10 years ago. My problem now is everybody giving me things or just running into music equipment that NEEDS a home. 14 amps, 5 guitars, drum set ,enough bass equipment , a P A, 5 mics, 2 keyboards. Why won't someone give me a storage place now . Just kidding but my bedroom is overrun with all kinds of musical stuff. Can't even get in my closet without moving so much stuff. But got to give all this music junk a home. So guess that's my fan boy problem. Wanted a Strat got a Strat. Wanted a Boogie got a Boogie. Wanted a Les Paul got a Les Paul. Wanted a 12 string got a 12 string. These are the pictures I had on my bedroom wall as a kid. Now I own so much of my dream equipment but I guess I'm getting over now it as I get older.

We went to the only local music store, 20 miles away, in what was the very first mall. Gibsons were way out of his price range, which was more like a 67 mustang with one neck pickup. But the salesman brought up the fact that we could get a japanese Sekova Telecaster, which was strikingly beautiful and had 2 pickups for the same money. That started my love affair with "Fender" guitars.

After seeing the builder's tiny ads in the back of Guitar Player I ordered an early 80s Hi-Mu amp - it's ok if y'all haven't heard of them - $500 in the 80s - and even after working as a gtr dept mgr for GC, and owning LOTS of amps, the Hi-Mu has done everything asked of it and it's stayed with me the whole time. Today it and a Line 6 Amplifi 75 as backup are my only amps.

After going through enough crappy Gibson's that left me going "wait this is a high end guitar?" i starting buying american core PRS guitars and their s2 guitars. I started watching videos of paul. I love that the guy who started the company still works/runs it. I love that he has very strong opinions about guitars and not just reciting market research.

I’ve been a humbucker fanboy. Never could afford Gibsons so I’d buy an Epi and mod it with better pickups and pots. I became a fanboy of PRS when a friend who must have a reserved parking spot at Willcutt’s loaned me one of his. I was hooked and still am even though a core model really is outside my affordability level. But those high end guitars play like butter.

I tried being a PRS fanboy. I have a CE I really tried to bond with. I didn’t like Les Paul’s, because the one I had just wasn’t versatile enough for recording the stuff I do, so it went away. I grabbed a used trad pro LP for the road, because it was cheap. I ended up really bonding with it. It does a thang. It’s versatile. A Strat is still the best when you want an iconic sound that can do a bunch of sounds though.

Gibson, Orange and MXR. Gibsons probably mostly as a reaction to their reputation online. I sold them for years when I worked in guitar stores. Their QC was never a problem. Believe what you want, but the negativity is just an internet bandwagon. I never encountered it in the real world. Orange and MXR because I'm drawn to simple, solidly built, dependable gear (like Gibson!). And also (for all three brands), because they sound good.

    Cool topic...
I was a Mesa/Boogie fanboy back in the day. I own a Mark IV head and I'm still very much it's fanboy. Lately though I'm all about Fender stuff. I love their amps. I've had a few over the years and all have been great. I also own an American Std ash body Tele that I consider an extension of my body and brain. I own a couple of Gibsons and they're great. But nothing gives me the feeling of playing that Tele with my drives and fuzz thru a Fender amp. Not even other Teles and I've played many wonderful custom shop ones. The Mark IV head is a similarly transcendent experience but other Boogies don't do it for me like this one. With Fender amps, I can find something similar with a few different models.
I guess I'm currently a Fender fanboy. Twins and Teles make me very happy.

If you ask anyone to draw a picture of a guitar, most will draw a Strat shaped guitar.
Fender Strats dominated the market along with Gibson for many years.
But as i found out the hard way, they are not ideal to learn on if you have small hands with
    short fingers.
I tried to learn on a Tokai Strat copy, but it's neck did not suit my hands, and it wasn't until
a neighbour lent me his well used Ibanez RG that at last i could play clean chords without sore hands.
Since then i have always bought S shaped guitars with thin wide radius necks, not the baseball
    bats that fender call necks.
As for Gibsons, yes the some of the necks and shorter scale length help, but they are like trying to
hug a big tree, even the SG trys to hit the floor if you let go of it!
So my Fanboy is with Ibanez, ESP, Schecter etc not with the big names.

I started on guitar before venturing into bass but as a kid hanging out with a high school buddy who had a mid 80’s silver burst Les Paul custom that his dad got after getting someone’s pawn ticket for I think $300. I remember it was heavy and played awesomely. After that it could be why I want a les Paul but they’re too expensive for my (just piddling around every now and then on it) guitar budget. Basses, different story.. 😂 And I have a peavey tko75 bass amp I got in the 80’s I still have. After a nuclear blast cockroaches and vintage peavey amps will remain.
