Thank you! I did the same as you (torch on the top bolts) and all 4 came out easy!! Fire extinguisher was on standby!

They sell an adapter kit for those rear shocks. It takes away the “bow tie” set up and uses sleeves and a bolt.

I had actually bought some (link in video description) as a backup plan option. Since all the bolts came out pretty easily I decided to stick with the factory option so I didn’t have to mess with getting the bow tie out of the shocks. The eliminator is definitely an option though.
      Thanks for watching, Brian.

If you disconnect the sway bar and full flex one side springs come right out without compressor. Shock disconnected too.

TDSR is coming right along. If you keep going you won't have any rusty bolts left to deal with. Keep it up. I did the rear shocks on mine in an earlier video, but once again they weren't rusty at all.

Thanks, Steve! You realize that TDSR is basically "let's see what Steve did to JJ and do that to TDSR," right? :)
Thankfully TDSR's rust has largely been surface-only so some PB Blaster, heat, and patience gets things free. I can't imagine having to deal with rust like they get up north...

Wow, good job. All 4 on my 2000 tj broke. i was already doing frame repair at the drivers side rear control arms, so i had the tank dropped. (it's real easy to do) I drilled them all out and re-tapped them. used plenty of anti sieze going back in!

I know I’m going to have to drop the tank in the near future on my TJ but the rust there has me holding off as long as I can. For sure, dropping the tank to get at those nuts from the top would make life much easier. Glad you were able to get yours taken care of. Thanks for watching.

@@CarbonsDIYGarage and dropping the tank is the same scenario as the shocks, except instead of a nutsert welded to the frame, it's a stud that the tank skidplate flange fits onto, with a nut holding it in place. I had one of the studs spin on me which was a pain because it was the one on the passenger side front of the gas tank, which is right above the exhaust. difficult to get to with anything to cut it off. I drilled and tapped a new screw for it upon re-install.

@@leftoverporkchop9972 Oof! Yet more reason to not look forward to doing this job....
At the same time, I feel like I should tackle it by replacing the skid plate before the fuel pump fails and I *have* to do it when I don't want to/haven't prepared to.

@@CarbonsDIYGarage Best of luck to you. I bought this tj knowing it would be a hobby, so, i guess i sort of look forward to the challenges. So far, it hasn't been too bad, and i've learned alot.

I just started taking my 2003 TJ apart today, shocks came off very easy. I'm doing a full suspension lift , control arms included and both trackbars..

Mine has a bracket that’s attached to the top of the shock!?! I can’t reach the bolt because the shock has a bolt in the way!?! How the heck am I going to get it?!?

    • @CarbonsDIYGarage
      @CarbonsDIYGarage  2 роки тому

Is it a pin eliminator like this?
      amzn.to/3iUrTbK
If yes, you would leave the bracket installed and just remove the bolt going through the shock. There are UA-cam videos on it. I almost installed these with my own project but opted not to.
Sorry if this isn’t much help. That’s the only thing that comes to mind.
