Thank you very much for the video. I really enjoyed the hot stone massage. I have been practicing for over 20 years, but I have not practiced hot stone massage.
That's great bodywork very good flow thanks for the instruction i will definitely incorporate some of your techniques thanks for putting out such a great video
Beautiful. Please consider the lower torso layered with three towels then add too hot to hold rocks from base of spine over gluteals and down each leg. Cover those rocks with a fourth towel. The far infrared warmth for lower torso will then aid your upper body routine. Put your lotion in a bowl of hot water. You will get deeper relaxation if your client is happy with an alternation of ice (make your own fist sized ice) and heated stone (lots of towels needed). The cardiovascular dilation will assist things like easing scoliosis or chronic tight fascia etc. Consider also including a few far infrared lamps on angle adjustable retractable arm stands to enhance warmth and comfort. Consider also making a green lamp treatment. Eat protein and Vitamins after each treatment, ozonate your treatment room. 🙏🏻
Thanks so muchfor this video. I literally just gave a hot stone massage at the spa I work at and felt really insecure about if I was doing it "right," so I had to jump on UA-cam and just look at someone else doing it to feel better. You reaffirmed how I was thinking about it: just use the stones the same way you use your hands, but taking advantage of (and being cautious of) the fact that the stones can deliver sustained heat to the tissue. You definitely introduced some new specific techniques I hadn't thought of, but in general it seems like, when it doubt, just use the stones to do effleurage, petrissage, and bone cleaning, and like any other modality, always check in with your client to make sure they like what you're doing.
This is different. Like to try this. I was taught to glide the stones slowly over the skin in a similar pattern of swedish - more gliding of stones rather than use - the way uve used the stones deeper. Anyone going fir a hot stone massage please note you may not get this type- you'll have to ask your therapist. Ive never only used one stone. I like your moves they seem good & maybe ask client if they want work around the scapular. I really like the feeling when the stones are left in the hands and tucked in around the body & near the end the stones are placed, lined up on the back the spine up to the traps - nice feeling of grounding ❤
Yes, stones will only last so long unfortunately. But the more the area warms up with previous stones, the longer future stones can last. Thank you for watching, more videos coming this year and the lower body hot stone routine is on that list!
Thank you so much for posting this. I hate doing hot stone massage. I am a pretty firm/deep therapist and every hot stone video I find is floofy massage. This is really helpful and I will definitely be applying these techniques.
I love the floor and having guests go into another dimension. I dig more of energy work as that goes very deep..everytime I see deep tissue on schedule I cringe lol....see how differnt we all are :) it's great.
Wonderful video. I see that you use the stones for a long time before switching out, which I liked. I worry about the stone losing all heat while using them for that long. Should I not worry about a constant heat then?
I might have used them a little longer just to demonstrate the techniques. But depending on the stones size and how much heat your clients body will soak up, you could get between 2-5 minutes per stone.
It is relaxing to watch. I have lymphatic edema in my legs and I read one should not do hot stone massage if someone has edema. Is it possible to do the hot stone massage also without massaging the legs? Or were the massage without legs not effectiv?
To answer all aspects of this comment; 1.) Heat is generally contraindicated for areas of lymphedema and other symptoms of inflammation. 2.) No, you do not have to massage the legs during a hot stone massage and it will still be effective, granted maybe slightly less so. BUT if the legs must be avoided due to contraindication, then that is safer than doing a full body routine. Try to find a therapist who is educated on lymphedema and I'm sure you will get a great and safe massage!! Thank you for watching!!
Thank you so much, glad you liked the video. I'm using a basalt stone set, here's a link to the stones closest resembling the set I bought; www.amazon.com/dp/B007LS7IS6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_RPRHACBQKW640P84J4TQ
Great video; your flow and technique is excellent! I've watched many of your vids now. How do you manage it when you're doing back-to-back stone treatments? Meaning, cleaning/sanitizing and reheating the stones when you have say 15 minutes until your next client and also need to sanitize and reset the table etc. And how are you cleaning your stones?
Thank you for watching! and that would be a tough one to manage for sure. Typically myself and other spas I've worked at include a 30 minute time period after the service, i.e. a 90 minute blocks off 2hrs of the schedule, for cleaning the stones. On top of that you can have multiple setups ready to go back to back. Combine the two things, the 30 minute break and 2 hot stone setups, you should be able to do back to back hotstones by cleaning/rotating each setup. I do plan to make a video about setting up and cleaning the stones and this makes a great point to address, thank you for your question! Hopefully this gives you an idea on how to manage multiple hotstone services in a day.
Glad you liked the video! I always stress to my students that proper body mechanics takes time to engrain into your body. I would say 1-2 years of dedicated practice to make someone truly efficient, but it's always an on going process of adjusting how you use your body as you age, develop new techniques and all that good stuff.
You can certainly give ample amount of pressure with the stones. There is a limit of how much pressure you could apply with the stones versus say a very heavy fist glide, but I have techniques demonstrated in this video where I put heavy pressure with my fist or forearm and then place the stone in front of the pressure and move the stone like a hockey puck to keep both heat and pressure on them. Try that out!
I feel like the stones at my spa seem to lose heat sooo fast. I mean, I might get a good two minutes of heat from two stones. We only have the hot towel cabby to warm them, so they end up extremely hot. I have to dip them into some lukewarm water for a second, dry off, then proceed. It just ends up being very inconvenient. Imagine all the time my hands come off the client to prepare for every change. I dread the times I see a hot stone massage on my schedule. There HAS to be a better way. (The owners are not going to accommodate only me). The other therapists agree with me, but they have the attitude like, “oh well it’s their spa and their clients.” 😢
Yes the towel warmer method is quite subpar when it comes to hot stone massage. As for them cooling off, it's just what happens I typically say a stone will stay hot for 2-5 mins depending on several factors including the clients body heat and stone thickness.
What I do is take the hot stone out the cabbie and place it on a towel to sit for 3 to 5 minutes then use it. It holds heat longer. Luke warm water cools the stones too fast. I hope this helps.
One other option is to purchase a hot stone heating case that heats the stones for you at the temperature you want set. And you will not need water to use the heating case because it is electric.
In my personal experience using massage oil is better than using lotion with hot stones. Lotion cools the stones quickly. Using massage oil holds heat longer and it is an easier glide for the use of stones.

I am a little unsure as to what "4" you are talking about. Technique name is typically an arbitrary assignment that helps people to understand a motion or to make a variation of the standard massage applications (effleurage, petrissage, compression, tapotement, friction, vibration and stretching) more memorable. "Reverse petrissage" for example, would help someone understand that instead of pressing tissues inward or together, you are instead spreading them apart which is by a more technical definition "broadening" or "fulling". As for my routine, yes, there is plenty of improvisation, but I am quite confident and comfortable with massage despite the initial impression. In any sense, I hope that there was something that you could use or learn from in this video!
