David, I enjoyed your video. I'm in the process of installing a Bafang system to my Catrike. I was confused on how to install the brake leaver switch. You cleared that up for me. Thank you! 👍
Good job installing it. I don't have an recumbent bike but my friend rides one. Had no idea you can install a Bafang on a recumbent bike. I am in the process of installing one on my 27.5 mountain bike. Should be fun when done. I am impressed by your recumbent bike.
If I did not have-assist on my new AZUB I would not be able to keep up with my wife as she rides this trike. Big fun! Thanks for commenting. Be safe out there.
Just ordered my kit for my 1st Gen HP Scorpion non folding 20". Haven't even rode it yet as I live in Fort Collins and it's snowing like crazy right now. May as well do the Bafang while it's nasty outside. Lots of great info that will help me a lot on my install, thanks. Subscribed too. TTYS.
Excellent, Pete. Good luck to you with the install. Email me if you need a question answered. I know what you mean about being inside. I've been inside most of the winter working on my model railroad and learning how to operate my new 3D printer. So far I've printed out about 8 n-scale garbage bins and put them all over town behind various buildings. Not enough time in the day. Thank you, Lord. Be blessed, Brother. Let me know how the install goes.
Your build videos are really helpful, thank you! I'm adding a Bafang BBS02 to my Catrike and watched the Utah Trikes and Bafang's installation videos also, but you gave out some excellent tips about tools and specifics. Hope your rides are going well, they are definitely more scenic than here in DFW!
Hey Una. You will love the addition of the BBS02 onto your Cattrike. Make sure you use the special install plate available from Utah Trikes. The motor will not stay in place without it. It will rotate up and back until it rest on the derailleur bar. That happened to me on a tripe and disconnected all of my wires. Believe me you will never need to go over 4 or 5 on the power assist level. That Bafang motor is powerful. I'm not riding as much currently because of the weather. At 27 degrees my toes absolutely freeze up on a trike ride. I Am enjoying my new AZUB Ti Fly (my wife inherited the TRIcon). Waiting for Spring and Summer. We have some bike packing/camping trips planned. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Take care. Where are you? DFW? Just curious.
@@daveyJ213 Hi David! I did buy the torque arm from Utah Trikes after watching your test ride video where your motor twisted back on the boom. That was a good tip. I'm excited to get the motor install finished, I'm just waiting for some extension cables and odds and ends to be delivered. Should be fully built and rideable on Monday, whoo hoo! That's cool that you got a new trike and you can ride with your wife. My boyfriend is a little hesitant about the perceived nerdiness of a trike but someday he'll cave, haha. For now we'll be able to bike and trike together, and yup, camping by trike is on my wish list too. Your trailer with solar power and battery hookups is ingenious! That might be a future project for me to try. I'm in Dallas, so normally it isn't too cold here, but this weekend we're in for an arctic freeze. Might get into the single digits! Hoping my figs and grape vines make it through. Have a great weekend and hopefully you can start riding again soon :)
Great series on the install and fine tuning of the Bafang system! I'm considering a Bafang for my Greenspeed Magnum, and you answered all my questions. Many thanks, and ride safe!
Very happy you found the video helpful Jim. You won't be sorry if you add the Bafang to your setup. It's much more fun to ride with a bit of power to help you up those long upgrades. Make sure the motor is physically unable to spin in the bottom bracket. The provided hardware will not hold it still; the motor is too powerful. Be blessed and safe. Take care.
David, Thank you for great documentation of your build. The detailed information of your ride was excellent and helpful. Please keep us updated on how it goes. Especially if you add a Rohloff I am really curious about how well that works. Thanks again.
hi David..is that noise is the old style blades/fins (4) that are the contact point between the battery and the battery foot. The New style cases have 2 round post (+/-) that make a solid contact.. I got the upgraded UPP 52v 17.5ah Sanyo GA cell Hailong 3 downtube batteries. My old batteries did the same thing... It drove me crazy because it sounded like something was coming loose. I think that is why they changed the design.. They have a kit to update from the old 4 blade system to the new 2 round post system. Although it is not easy to swap out the contacts. (a rather involved process where you have to nip some of the casing away)
This is awesome. I totally want to hang out with you! Great video. Did you choose the 750 watt over the 1000 watt just because of price? I don't need to go faster, I just want as much torque as possible and the 1k has 170Nm vs 120-130Nm... I'm thinking about the 1k for my San Francisco hills!
Hey Jillo. Price was a factor yes, but putting that aside I'm glad I did not get the 1K. Eventually I had to install a special bracket to keep the motor from spinning in the bottom bracket. It's a part designed and engineered by Utah Trikes. The hardware Bafang provides will not do the job no matter how tightly you crank it down. I programmed the motor to do a top speed of 35 MPH, divided evenly between nine speed steps. I have NEVER had the motor above step six. It's too damned fast. My wife inherited this trike from be. She of course weighs way less than I do, therefore she can climb ANY hill we encounter. On a 4 or 5 percent grade, she can leave me in the dust on my Shimano powered Ti Fly. If you get the 1K motor, there will not be a hill you cannot climb in San Francisco. The new models are even more awesome because they now incorporate torque sensing instead of sensing rotations only. Must more natural delivery of power. However, the 750 will get the job done, believe me. Hope this helps. Have fun and be safe out there.
Are you living north now? I thought you lived in SoCal when we met. I was right outside DC in Northern Ava, but now in Tennessee. Lots of hills, traffic, and no safe lanes outside of town.
Thanks for the great video! I accidentally found your site and have subscribed. We are of the same “ vintage” and I ride in New England... Cape Cod area and head south to Florida for four months..leaving in 3 weeks. Your video was informative and the views were great. I ride a Catrike Trail with a Bionx system and I am picking up my new folding Catrike559 at the end of week...easier to transport...got it without E A as I already have one with but was thinking of adding the Bafang when I return from Florida( no hills there)..... by then you will have a few months of riding experience on your new system and you should be able to advise me and make suggestions on its utility and durability....FYI... we are both model railroad nuts.Keep posting the great content. Mark
Hey, Mark. Thank you for subscribing. Congratulations on your new Catrike 559. I'll look that up online. I love the way the Bionix works. I have a Bionix unit on my Trek rode bike, and tried, and tried to get my local shops to lace it into my rear wheel of my trike, but none seemed anxious to give it a try. So I went with the Bafang. I'm putting my video together now where I take a short 10-mile ride under full load. Also, I'll make sure I post an update on my model railroad. The streets are paved and the street lines are painted. Little N-scale people are happy. Thanks for posting. Enjoy your trip down to Florida. I've never been, but it looks beautiful down there. Be careful; enjoy. All the best.
David Massey ...looking forward to your video update after your next ride. I have a Bionx on my Catrike Trail and love it because it keeps gearing intact. I still have the three gears up front and ten in the rear for a 30 gear ride...and I rarely use the EA as I prefer the exercise but love having the peace of mind if I get to a monster hill or get involved with bad weather necessitating a quicker return to the car. I also find EA is a nice option when riding in traffic and having to start from a dead start to get across an intersection...good safety feature. My new Catrike559 has a 3X10 gearing mechanism and is foldable and will weigh 20 lbs less than the EA Trail and will also have a 26” rear drive wheel making it much faster. Catrike is making this model and others as EA but not delivering until spring and using the Bosch system.... and I want a transportable trike to,use in very flat Florida this winter.Also...their new E Cat is going to have the motor in the front hub and reduce gearing to a 1X11. I really don’t need two E bikes...and the cost for the EA Bosch is apparently going to be at least $2500 extra. If I feel that I need it they will retrofit it for me with a new boom and motor but they will not do any retrofits until they have met the new order demands for factory installed systems. If I retrofit I believe I will use Bafang as I can keep my gearing and keep cost under $1000. Btw...where are you located.....best wishes..have a great holiday.
Hey Rob. I finally fixed that problem; it turned out that the actual lock (where the key goes in) was rattling and vibrating. The fix was posting a piece of blue painter tape across the lock face to hold it still. No noise! However, is that at all similar to what you are talking about? Thanks for the information.
