The Kieth and Donna years were golden, I met the band in 71 with Pigpen and met Owlsey who was Sound man that night. Walked up to Jerry who was sitting on the side of the stage warming up his fingers shook his hand and asked if I could get behind the amps and he let me.Got dosed almost immediately by Bear who had a murine bottle he was dropping on the back of your hand and then licked it off ! Just got back from Egypt 🇪🇬 and the place is an acid trip without the Grateful Dead playing in front of the Sphinx. Had I been there for this, I’m sure I would never had returned
I played in a band when I was 16 years old in Salt Lake City UT. Our lead guitarist, named Bart was quite the comedian. Our band mascot was a 6 ' boa that happened to wrap around my foot while being transported to practice. We played if you were going to a fire on the mountain, what would you bring...you can imagine some of the responses. Lots of drugs, love and laughter shared at those Frat gigs. Back in 1983. Miss you Bart, the lake at Liberty Park is still clean. Hope you see this. Love Rachel
Keith finger rolls the keys.... and the "mood" shifts to "ahhhhhh" and jelly-like.... and then Donna sneaks a little smile to Hubby saying, "that A# was f cool dude."☺️🌼
just read history of the Dead books. they'll tell you all you want to know! Nobody who was an icon like the boys and girl in the GD could escape drug use...i've read she was incapacitated by heavy usage same as Jerry, and others.. no wonder! things couldn't get more groovy than in the sixties and seventies!!
One of the deads best songs, reminds me of a lot, mostly the fire season in northern California in 2008, my last season on the job a Wild land fire fighter! Thank you Jerry saw you twice in 95 before you passed🙁
They don't call him Grateful Red for nothin' First time the band met Bill, they sent a roadie out there because they thought someone was standing on a chair. Roadie goes out and sees a seven-foot Deadhead. Roadie tells the band who it was.
For anyone who's interested, this is the version of this tune that appears on the 2004 Reissue of the "Shakedown Street" album. In short, it doesn't get any better than this! Great tune, great band.

Come on now. Lets put it this way...there were 11 males in the Dead's history, and only ONE female. Without Donna we would only have Phil and/or Bob sounding like their balls were being stepped on just to do what she did on stage every night and on all of their major 70's studio albums. the high vocal melodies in most dead songs are MADE for a beautiful woman's voice. she had her off nights, but so did every other band member. much love and respect to Donna and all she contributed to the Dead
This is such a great Fire and video. To see the joy on everyone's face during this song. Considering where they're playing, I mean really, where they're fu*&ing playing! From Donna smiling at Jerry's killer intro riff, to Jerry smiling and acknowledging Bobby's 12ft fret chord riff shortly before the vocals, then of course, Phil smiling and dancing at (towards?) Mickey. Love it!

Any band that can set up and play at the great pyramids in Egypt is definitely first ballot hall of fame material! I heard a tape of this years ago on a ticket camphor, great stuff! Anyone remember the ticket camp out?! Anyone remember laughter!??
I mean it is 9 minutes of 2 chords & "fire! fire on the mountain!" Over & over again ...maybe not the most friendly thing to trip to but to each their own
The Dead never gave Donna a monitor. She made due, and the band played its best music while she was on board. Yeah there where times where she was off, but if you listen to as many shows as many of us have, you will find that of all of the members.
f4vre01 As you know the shows weren't all the same. Some shows were longer others shorter.. the songs weren't always the same length but usually long and if stoned who cared. Part of greatness of Dead was that if someone happen to be off key or a riff was different... it still all blended in. Those were some good concerts back then... with the war over and that black cloud gone at last. Freedom...
Never gave her a monitor? Never knew that. WTF? I think Jerry was off more than anyone, in his later years, especially. All that smoking is hard on the vocal cords and it gets harder and harder to hit higher notes. Concerts were a mixed bag, but they were about more than the music, also the community. Love Live the Dead! Of course, I had a terrible crush on Donna Jean. Anyone else? Raise of hands?
HE NEEDS TO GO NOW! Energy? Mind bending soloing? A drummer without a broken arm? A keyboardist that does more than hit the chord on the beat? I can think of a lot more that I'd ask for lol
Rex Stoops me too. They said the energy was incredible. Playing in an apatheater that was built before Christ. Right by the pyramids in giza. Ps. Nice profile pic 😉
This show itself is more symbolic of the Dead's achievements as a band and their notoriety, but Fire on the Mountain is still a great song and the Shakedown from this show is one of my favorites
Hop in the old time machine, we're goin' to Egypt! Giza or bust! Where's Doc Emmitt Brown when we need him, damn it! Why did I have to miss out on these glorious days...
Nobody’s talking about the fact that this was the first rock and roll band to play in Egypt. The logistics to pull this off must have been insane.
did Sun Ra play here before them?
I climbed the Great Pyramid in 1981. The fellahin around the area were still talking about the "boys." They obviously loved them all.
