Yes, this is the Extended Version of the studio version. Love this song to death. Jodeci and Intro are the only male R&B groups of the 90s that perfected a Stevie Wonder rendition. Intro did it with Ribbon in The Sky (RIP Kenny Greene). Hated the fact that Uptown/MCA never made this studio version or the radio edit studio version commercially available. Fans were forced to buy the MTV Uptown Unplugged Live Version. Which is ok. But most of us already had that album and video. We wanted the studio version that was played on radio and seen in black and white video. This song shouldve been released on US versions of Diary of a Mad Band as a bonus song or something. It was released on import copies. SMMFH
DeVante is an absolute genius. It is indeed one of the most difficult things to record a cover version that is better than the original version by one of Stevie Wonder's greatest songs who is actually a true legend.
Stevie Wonder is absolutely a musical genius but Jodeci did the impossible with this song. I remember hearing this for the first time when it was released. Literally had goosebumps at 5:20
Jodeci performed this version on The Arsenio Hall Show, with Stevie Wonder making a guest appearance and performing the song with Jodeci. They also performed this version on an episode of season 2 of Martin "Hollywood Swinging (Part 2)".
I just watched the Martin episode with Jodeci and had to come find the studio recording of Lately. I haven’t heard this version since I was a kid. I wish they had this version available on streaming platforms.
In the fall of 1990 I was a high school senior in NYC, I was just accepted to one the Atlanta HBCUs and the first single I heard from Jodeci was 'Gotta Love' where they all had on the hoodies for Morehouse, Spelman, Howard and Clark Atlanta, dancing in a NYC subway. It was like a celebration song for me being accepted to an Atlanta college. Then in the fall of 1991, I was sitting in the college rec room when the video for 'Forever My Lady' came on BET and me and my friends were like WOW! From the first time I heard it I was blown away ever since by this number one love song of all time. Then they just kept dropping hit after hit through my college years. Their music influenced us young cats, our style, and filled our days of hanging out in our cars and at the clubs with so much joy. One of the last songs was in 1996 "Love You for Life" and the wedding video they did. It was just before I left Atlanta but a swan song so to speak, one of success in finding love, but a perfect close to the Jodeci saga being in Atlanta in the 90s.
Stop telling stories and get your timeline right…”gotta love” was released late winter 1991 right before spring In February 1991 then they dropped FML later that year…that’s when they took off 💯
@@1980starjustice First off, I'm older than you for sure, so I very much remember the period while you were probably in grade school. Fall/Winter, bout the same time. Second, why the hell would I be telling stories for the hell of it? Sick.
This song is for Michael K. Williams, the actor from HBO's "The Wire" TV series, who passed away at the age of 54 on September 6th, 2021, during the Labor Day weekend. R. I. P., Michael K. Williams. 😥
Jodeci: 🎶 Lately I have the strangest feeling 🎶 Martin: OH yall thought it was over? You know what girl, I think k u been Cheating on me! Me & Jodeci think you're cheating on us🤔 Jodeci:👀👀👀🤬🤬🤬 Gets me everytime I hear that part🤣🤣
I heard this version on the radio and I called up the DJ and she told me that it was available on 12” at Peaches. I believe it was the last vinyl I ever bought.
You know girl I think you cheating on me.. Me and jodice think you cheating on us. you say you going to the 7/11 for a big gulp and you never come back with the gulp... I got the strangest feeling 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
What do you mean? Was Tevin supposed to do a cover version of Lately before Jodeci? Or was this an arrangement for another song that Jodeci used for Lately?

Okay, you’re absolutely correct....great memory 💯
I have searched up and down for this on any Cd and no luck... closest is on a Import from Britain.
Radio edit of this version is on the extended edition of Diary of a Mad Band

Me I was a freshman
This was such a beautiful, and rich arrangement. Definitely one of their best songs. Devante did the DANG THANG on this one.
This version of the song is pure gold!

Them trademark DeVante Swing synthesizers near the end tho!!!!
The ending of the song with the Synthesizers are the best in the world.

Finding all these different versions of this Song, and NONE of them are sounding as I remember it growing up. Not one. 😕
Which version are you looking for? The live Jodeci version? The original Stevie Wonder version?
@@VAswang Just none of the ones I've found on UA-cam sound as I remember it growing up. Off the original album.

This arrangement was done by AL and Kyle for Tevin's project, but Quincy sent it back.
What do you mean? Was Tevin supposed to do a cover version of Lately before Jodeci? Or was this an arrangement for another song that Jodeci used for Lately?
@@VAswang yes
I try hard to absorb the real song, but Martin on Varnell Hill has forever ruined it for me 😩😂

@echiraa Better than Boyz II Men? Idk about that one, but hell its wayyyyyyyyyy better than the shit we got out today lol.
