- Jim Clark was a standout talent in F1 during the 1960s, securing two world titles and a whole host of records. One of those records won't be going anywhere soon however - a lap record of his at a quaint circuit in the south of England. That record - using a Lotus 25 - is fully stamped into the history books forever. Let us explain.

Even I have an unbeatable record. I have the fastest lap ever around my old house's living room in a Lamborghini Aventador r\c car. The house was demolished and a new house is built on that piece of land so yeah nobody can beat it

the point was that a top driver on the new layout which is "easier" for safety reasons was 5 seconds over Jim Clark's time in the same car. It's like Hamilton pooling a 5 seconds lead over Vetel if they were in the same modern F1 car (or the other way around if you prefer) !!! Yes that record is gonna stand no matter what. Granted the video could have argued the point a bit better than it did.
A 57yo ex-touring car driver with no F1 experience whatsoever on a, I'm sure, very expensive, rare and valuable car can't beat a lap record of a 2-times world champion - who would have thought!

Sorry, as much as Jim Clark was brilliant, having a lap record on a closed down circuit version isn't exactly revolutionary. In fact, there's multiple records not broken due to this.

Walter Röhrl at Pikes Peak; Stefan Bellof at the Nordschleife;... the List goes on just 2 examples that sprung to mind.
@@Noise-Bomb Regarding Bellof's record at the Nordschleife, he set that record in the first year of the current layouts existence so the 919 Evo and ID R lap times were set on the same layout and are therefore legitimate breakings of the 6:11.
@@transformersguy234 Do to construction of the gp circuit it wasn't complete. the Area around t13 changed drastically after that year when the gp circuit was finished. Therefore times aren't directly comparable.
Who not seen the episode of Grand Tour with Jim Clark should definitly watch it. Hammond did a great job of portraing that legend.

Based on what? Comparison to other drivers of his day, who were mostly basically amateurs, and the level of competition back in the day was a joke compared to today? He wasn't half as good as the worst driver on the F1 grid today. FACT. Despite nobody wanting to admit that. He was the best IN HIS DAY, but in his day, there weren't many top level drivers competing against him, so being better than others was INFINITELY easier than it is today. People who don't realize how much the sport evolved over the years and who keep praising old drivers are just idiots, plain and simple. Even Senna would be below average if he competed today in the form of his life.

@BeyerT1 A fact many ignore. F1 in the 50's and 60's was amateur hours. It's not the say Hill, Clark or Moss weren't talented but when you consider how young, how focused, and how competitive motorsport is today - he might not make the f1 grid.

My father did not cry , but my mother told me that day he was , simply silent .. when they had the first child , my brother they named him Clark .. my father passes away in 2002 , but we needed up getting very close through F1 , my fathers best always Jim , he is the best of the best 🥰🥰

I saw Jim Clark race in New Zealand about 1965. I was a boy. Were were very close to the track and had a great view of the drivers. We knew Jim was one of the greats, even then.

If the lap changed than his record becomes just a historical record and isn’t active. The moment a track changes all previous records go away with the old track.

The reason the F1 drivers of the 1950’s and '60's would race in other disciplines is they only had a maximum of ten races a year. Nowadays they have 20+ races a year, they haven't got TIME to race in any other disciplines!!
Not to mention many of their contracts strictly forbid them from doing so (to prevent them from getting hurt more than anything else).
@@flyingphoenix113 not to mention Bernie Ecclestone spending three decades making sure F1 clashed with the Indy 500, LeMans, and most touring car series!
That and the fact it was their only source of income. They didn't make much per race so had to race alot to make a decent living. Today's drivers make millions.
@@Bahamuttiamat Jim Clarke made his money to keep his family sorted from his farm. He didn't make much more than he spent from racing.
@@Bahamuttiamat the majority of racers back then made very little money from racing, it was very much a rich man's sport. Clarke was a successful farmer, Hawthorne and Hill came from highly successful car dealing families, Jackie Stewart's family were never hard up. Back then, if you had to rely on your race earnings to survive, you and your family would starve to death! Even today a fair few drivers actually PAY to drive in formula one, rather than being paid!!
You should've done your research drivetribe. Hamilton is on 6 grand slams getting his most recent in abu Abu Dhabi last year. So there is a chance of lewis breaking jims record aswell.
Kamran Foster Hamilton is just on another level. That guy is beating almost every F1 record.

@@mohammedebrahim5417 As someone mentioned above, back then there were only 10 races per season, allowing them the time for other racing series. There are 22 races next season, they don't have time to race other series. The season is now 9 months long...
Also if you recall when Hamilton was doing other things then racing his wins went down as think he was spreading himself too far,
We unconsciously assume that they turn up on thursday have a spin now and again thru till sunday then go home and rest up until the following wednesday,
All i know is there is more involved with being a f1 driver then anyone outside of the sport can imagine, as the driving is only one of several things they do,
I have respect for every f1 racer good or bad as they are doing what so many of us can only dream of
I doubt that grand slam is relevant anyway. Back then they only pitted for puncture or damage so if they drove away nobody could catch them. and now the leaders have to pit to prevent an undercut. So a grand slam is much harder to do nowadays
It's really not a story about a lap record but about the greatest driver ever, I saw him race several times in an F1 Lotus as well as in a Lotus Cortina, his driving in the Cortina was sublime.
Jim was a fan fave at Indy. His modest, workmanlike nature was a perfect fit with the ethic of America's Midwest race fans. When I see his 500 winning Lotus at the IMS museum, I recall him with both fondness and sadness. You're still a favorite, Jim.
There are a large number of circuit lap records that will never be broken. The Avus ring, the old Spa Francorchamps, the combined North and South Nurburgring, the original Sachsenring and the original BRNO are just a few examples. All are now consigned to the history books, and almost all for the same reason to the changes at Goodwood - safety concerns.
I am old enough to have witnessed his driving. Lotus and Clark was a partnership born in heaven. Colin Chapman built delicate cars that had to be driven with extreme finesse to get the best out of them. Jim could do that. Moss was a brute in comparison. Brabham said he could never get close when Jim was on song. Jim could take a car out in practice, do some laps, tell the mechanics what settings to change then go out and set pole seemingly without effort. Quite often that pole time was set on the first session of practice, maybe on a Friday. Everyone else struggled through three sessions and all day Saturday to get theirs right, but still not good enough. He could change racing lines to confuse the followers and cause them to go slower but he still managed to be right on the lap record, no matter what. No one in the modern era comes close.

Lol. If I remember correctly, even Jimmers hasn't beat any of Clark's records (am thinking specifically of his attempts at historic Monza). Clark was Senna and Schumacher without the unnecessary hype.

When I was a teenager I saw Jim racing in Monza in 1964, 65, 66 and greatly in 1967, when the crowd went wild.

I still recall exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard of that sad sad news. He was amazing so lucky to have seen him racing in the Lotus Cortina. I do still feel sad about his early death..
I was taken to the Jim Clarke museum as a kid, as my Dad was born close to it! but we had been visiting the memorial to my favorite uncle, who died in tragic circumstance Penmanshie tunnel collapse! going there was torture for me! My Dad has passed away, but half his ashes are buried above his beloved brother! Some day i will return to the museum to in a different frame of mind, will have a different experience! As i have since grown, but truly learned! Just what a TRULY AMAZING DRIVER HE REALLY WAS!
It is probably just my age, 70s, but I think that the cars from the '60s are the purest form of motor racing. A tube containing an engine, gas tank, and driver, with wheels attached on spindly little arms. Of course they were dangerous as hell, so many drivers were killed back then, it couldn't continue.

tbh can’t believe some of the comments about his lap record. Such a true legend and talent that turned his hand to anything he drove. That’s skill levels beyond most competitive racers today
He ran multiple series because he didn't care what he was driving, so long as he was driving. Some people are simply pickier than others when it comes to how they spend their time. Clark was beyond most drivers in his time, too. That's how you become a world champion
I saw Jim drive twice in Formula 1 cars at Watkins Glen race track in New York. Masterful performances both times and he was indeed in a class all his own! Tragic that he was killed at the wheel of a Lotus Formula 2 car in a relatively unimportant race...

I was expecting this to be about his incredible Monza time. He matched his 1:28.5 qualifying time in the race and came from the back of the grid to the front after a bad pit stop

You've forgotten to mention that Jim still holds the absolute lap record for the Aintree Grand Prix Circuit in the Lotus 25, which still exists as it was when racing finished on the full circuit in 1964.
There's a Clarke on-board film where he's om the green edge, it's mesmerising.

I think the title of the video is giving some people the excuse to miss the point of the video. The reason why people choose to miss the point and run with it is, because some people are assholes and would rather be negative instead of looking past this unfortunate title. Video is not really about the lap record. It's about how great Jim Clark was.

Even senna considered him the best driver of all time. He had commissioned a painting with all the all time greats of F1 and the painter had asked to put which drivers in what position. Ayrton said "it's up to you where you put them but Jim Clark must be in poll position". That says it all to be honest
Anyone can see the pure skill of this man. A totally natural talent that sat in any car and drove the bollocks off it as if it was a sunday drive.
Senna was quite modest. Said that, clearly by respect on his memory and to be nice on the beggining of his career.

I don't think you're talking mince about the deaths but Von Trips was due to insufficient safety in the cars of that generation of drivers. Petersons was due to a fat embolism from his broken thigh bone, getting to his heart causing a heart attack. And Andretti is classed as being Italian and not American by the history books on Grand Prix's..

Another point, which is usually never acknowledged - Jim drove actual cars...not space capsules. In his day, it was 60 % driver/ 40 % car. Now, the percentages are reversed.

And I have heard it said by many many people in Motor Racing that Ayrton and Jim Clark had the one thing that makes all great racing drivers great. They could be totally relaxed at Great speeds and makes a car do what they wanted to do even though the car wasn't really capable of it

Spa. 500cc Grand Prix lap record (on a track that still exists.) ....... still held by Barry Sheene from 1977.
whilst the majority of the old Spa layout still exists as public roads, that is another unchallengeable record simply due to the fact that the chicane exists where there was once a straight.
That must apply to many circuits that have been changed.

It was a shame to loose him so young, winning SPA by 5 minutes is staggering in any era. This is because he saw it as a sport not a job, plus it was "His Talent" not god given! Thats why he was so humble
Clark was a brilliant driver who left us way too soon, but I also have a lot of time for John Surtees. He's the only person to win the Formula One Championship and the 500cc Motorcycle World Championship, demonstrating a versatility that has never been equalled. I also have a lot of time for Fernando Alonso who apart from winning two Formula One world championships, has also enjoyed success at Le Mans and Daytona and has just successfully finished the Paris-Dakar at his first attempt.

My bias is toward Mario Andretti as the greatest driver. F1 champ, winner at Le Mans, Indy 500 winner, sprint cars and Daytona 500 winner (NASCAR). I would be willing to bet he could kick ass on a motorized bar stool!
