    Thanks, again. We use audio from our videos to produce our podcasts, so it is pretty important that it sounds as good as we can make it. That’s why I am trying to learn more about audio (after all these years of ignoring it as we’ve been recording music). Since I am responsible for producing and editing the videos, I knew that I need to step up my game in this area. I didn’t know about key frames and ranges, so this is especially helpful. 🙌🏾

      Just a quick tip for those watching. I totally agree with Tom on dropping the volume for background music but another work around is scooping the mids out of the song as well. This leaves room for dialogue and often fills up the rest of the frequency bandwidth nicely! I can usually drop my music down -15 to -20 as long as I scoop some mids by 6-8db, making a smiley face in the eq. Give it a try!

    Tom, where have you been all my life? Dude I absolutely love how you teach. I’ve been sitting here for the past 2 hours just watching your videos. I’m a UA-cam junkie! I admit. I have to be honest, my lack of skill when it comes to editing is the story telling & how to create the edit not editing it’s self. I do a lot of vacation video with my family. I’m the guy that always walks around with all the equipment filming everything. Then when I get home & throw it all on the computer. I my worst critic, so I fight myself on should or shouldn’t this clip be in this location or should I move it down the timeline. I would absolutely love if you could show us “what goes through the mind of an editor & how you choose to put what, where within the timeline to tell a story” basically tapping into the mind of an editor while putting a short 3min video together. Thanks again Tom & I’m a sub’d to your channel & a raving fan! Take care buddy & thanks again for all your doing to share your knowledge.

    When a video is uploaded to UA-cam, do they adjust audio levels for the video to normalize audio for their format? Is there a reason they don't allow users to adjust audio in UA-cam Studio after upload?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 роки тому

      I think they do some sort of EQ, but don’t know exactly what. MKBHD recently did a really cool video experiment on the video compression they use. Idon’t know if there’s a reason for not being able to adjust afterwards though...

    Could you make a video about how to make the slowed down effect for a hit of a song where the video will go into slo mo too then speeds ramp back up? I see this a lot in workout videos

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 роки тому

      This is a fun/interesting idea! My friend Peter made a video about speed ramps in Final Cut Pro, which is a huge part of the technique: ua-cam.com/video/5vc1X1ykuyQ/v-deo.html
      From there, you can slow and/or pitch down the audio to get that bassy-timestop effect.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 роки тому

      Hey there! You can add an equalizer/limiter (found in the audio effects menu near the video effect layers) before exporting. You can either creat a compound clip off all your audio to add it once, or create a preset once you have the settings you like. Then just select all your audio and double click the preset to apply it to all of them. 👍

    Great video Tom - I am fairly new to FCPX. I record 2-3 vids a month for UA-cam and now edit using this software. The videos you create are very useful and also very user friendly to the inexperienced, so thank you. There is a phrase I often hear but don’t fully understand. That is when people talk about “mastering to 24 LUFS” which I believe is the optimum loudness level for UA-cam. Is there a preset setting on FCPX to allow me to do this....?

You can see your audio settings on the export screen, but even before that, if you click on your audio clip in the timeline and then open the Audio Inspector, you'll see "stereo" or "mono" above the waveform in the sidebar.
