The lady in the glasses gave me a very unexpected insight. She talked about how this time spent trying not to die is worth it because it's the most important thing you could possibly spend your time on. I understand the logic, but if half of your day is spent trying to extend your life, are you not wasting your time trying not to die? Could you not have used that time for living a more complete, fulfilled life?
She also came across as condescending to the young woman. Instead of being helpful about what she knows as being informative for everyone, she suggests the young woman doesn’t know what she should know like her.
Brilliant piece. Not sure if I was meant to chuckle through 90% of it, but there you go. Sad thing is that death is precisely what gives life value. Life gives life meaning. Understanding the mind and consciousness gives life meaning. If you can't find meaning in being alive when you are young and healthy, then you aren't going to find it when you are old and nearing death, unless you are psychologically blessed - which most of us aren't. A plastic rose can be just as valuable as a real rose to me The fact that one will die means nothing. It's the quality of the rose that means something. And I'm not one of those crazy death denialists. I just think we are too easy prey for spiritual pablum that fails to comfort us when death actually approaches.

I worked in hospice and I believe death is a miracle honestly. For people who had terminal illness and suffered tremendously because of it, death was a release from the agony. And who wants to live in a sick and diseased body? And even if you lived a thousand years what will you do?Life is about our contribution to others, how we give, share, love and connect with one another. If humans are selfish now and don't care about others and see others as separate from themselves, and as their enemy, and wars are still all over our planet, and we haven't solved poverty, hunger and millions of children die around the world from starvation. Why would anyone want to live a thousand years? To do what exactly? I would think people be far more selfish and careless if they knew they can live forever. No need for anyone to stay in here forever, and after living for hundreds of years, that too will get old and exhausting and people would then try to find a way to die. It seems so appealing to think living forever is fun, until you don't have the option to die..,then it may not be such a great idea after all..

I can relate to you too. I used to have it in my early childhood years after I suddenly lost my grandma. But know I feel chill about death since I've learned about the conditions that, in my opinion, much worse than death, such as dementia, brain trauma or any major psychiatric disorder that make one litterally lose their mind, turning people into an unconscious mess which constantly make their own lives as well as lives of their relatives miserable.
Of that weird deluded couple, unless they die suddenly .and at the exact same time, then when one dies and the other doesn't, they're gonna be in for one hell of a shock ...
Having gotten to the last stage of my life I’m finding death and the pain and fear involved turns out to be a powerful force in me for change, for dare I say even, transformation. It’s wreaking changes in my psyche and attitudes that nothing else has been able to effect in the last 74 years. So I don’t recommend avoiding death, I recommend accepting it as a stage in spiritual growth and the necessary preparation for the life that lies beyond the physical. I’m not saying I’m necessarily right in this but that’s how I see it now and I’m actually glad to be going through this process, painful and messy as it often is. I’ve become a lot more resilient to pain and accepting of it over the last few months. I feel like I’m gradually being exposed to more as I become better able to handle it. It’s a lot like the lessons I learnt through exercising - as you do it and endure the early discomfort, your body gets stronger and more capable, to the point where you actually enjoy pushing yourself through what was previously a barrier. Yep, I could be nuts, that’s just how I see it.
Who truly wants to live forever?? Even if it were possible, who would really want to live forever?? Not me!! This place is not heaven, it’s not a dream, it’s not paradise. Even if I lived forever in paradise it would be boring. I would be happy to live a fulfilled life with my children and once I’m not able to do that p, then it’s time to end the show. Life is a stage, ya gotta know when the play is over.
There is a big difference in "living forever" or "expanding our life by a few thousand years". 80 years is just way too short. Pretend for a moment we were living in a world where people on average became 10.000 years old. One day some guy says he invented a pill that would accelerate the aging process so people would die around 80 years old. Would you say "Yeah, thanks, 80 years is much better than the 10.000 years we are alive right now?" Or would you say "That guy lost it completely!"?
It'd be interesting to see these people sit down and talk with people with depression and who are suicidal or considering euthanasia. Maybe they might give each other some interesting perspectives that they hadn't considered before? or maybe not, idk i just think it'd be interesting.
Wow, this really took a dark turn when the lady in glasses explained her reasons for being interested in the subject. It is easy to dismiss life extension and similar endeavours as silly when you are still young, but it is not so silly when you get older and start to feel your own mortality. I really hope we can change the public's view of aging from seeing it as something natural to the disease that it is, and make some real progress on finding a cure for it in the coming decades.
We are in 2020 and Ive seen that progress! Through science and the internet people are sharing what happens in death with more education. For me it was a 12 car pile up on the Interstate and the higher level of consciousness and spirit is the true meaning of life. Its not about face lifts and flashy clothes. These guys are a mockery
I'm fairly young and I still feel my mortality tangibly. Dismissing the idea of false hope isn't about the silliness, it's about it being false hope. We're all mortal. Desiring otherwise won't change that fact
Remember to create an interstellar engine before the pill of immortality, because one only planet will be a little crowdy without dead... or maybe only the richest people could live forever? And the poor ones, as usual, will continue to die as flies?
@@senorswordfish6019 Nations, not people. And as people stop dying and new ones are being born, the population will rise. I agree with Steve Jobs on this one, Death is Life's best invention. Why on Earth do you think you deserve to be around forever? What is so special about you? You had your chance, let someone else live.
No to so much denial as fear convention - a lot of scared people - and most of us are scared about something - all trying their best not to admit it and face it.
12:17 I disagree with the woman who said "There's nothing pretty about death." After living in Mexico for over a decade where they celebrate the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) I have learned that some cultures appreciate death as equally as beautiful of a part of life as birth. .. and I love that!!
It seems cruel that we have consciousness, only to have it taken away by death. The conscious mind does not want to cease to exist. Unfortunately, we are forced to practice death every night when we sleep. We also have to watch our own slow-motion death while looking in the mirror as the years pass and we shrivel into oblivion. It’s definitely a cruel cosmic joke. If I could speak to death, I would say, ‘LOOK - BUB’, we don’t want to die, we want to live forever…
If you like this episode, the rest of the series can be found on this link: ua-cam.com/video/aZdDXNmD9wk/v-deo.html And there's a new episode every Thursday. Thank you for watching!
I absolutely hate the idea of aging, it scares the hell out of me that my looks are fading, I'm 43 and my body and mind are deteriorating, but these people are so strange and look half dead any way. I'm not scared of death though, it will be nice to rest, and hopefully see dead love ones.
I gain comfort in knowing that the time will move just as fast as it did before my birth. Living forever is greedy, humans must die so other people can experience life
The fact of life I keep coming to is that the very things that limit us are the things that makes life worth it. Basically, your particularity comes from being a limited being in space and time. When you love someone, you also love all the ways they are "flawed" as the saying goes. Our charm and meaning lies in being particular and limited being. It forces you to be courageous, forgiving and open, because we aren't here forever, and you can't do everything or be everything, and that is what makes us us. Just like the beauty of colour is exactly in the fact that they are limited light. Red is beautiful like it is because of the tragically inadequate white light that is uniquely limited, metaphorically. That's how I see it. Limit is what makes meaning, worth and beauty.
For anyone who has trouble with the issue of death. Here is a way of thinking that surprisingly made me feel happy. There is the Sun, whose sunlight powers the plants. Animals and humans eat plants. Humans might also eat other animals. Our body is made up of elements that are also found on the earth, in the soil. We are just Solar energy trapped in a toy made of soil. But our body deteriorates. And one day, the soil toy crumbles and turns to humus. Which gives life to plants and microbes. And other soil toys depend on the plants and microbes. And even after deterioration we help other lives. The elements (C,H,O,N, S etc) just change forms like Lego. And that makes me peaceful for some reason.
I completely understand the desire to eradicate illness and disease as that causes long term suffering be it mental, physical or both. I even get not wanting to physically age, mainly due to the health issues that arise, the lack of independence (depending on the health situation) even the looks aspects. People would rather keep their physical youth and beauty. However in regards to death I really agree with the doctor in the second episode when she says what would become of humanity without death. I believe it would become distorted and corrupted (even more so). Not to mention the overcrowded population issue that would arise. How would our minds take living for 200 years for example would we become numb to life?
What a positive message. Who wants to really die? People can accept death and that doesn't change the fact on how horrible death is. To know there are people studying, doing researches , etc about staying alive as long as we can in a healthy state, like why not? I am in!
@@alicem9615 Of course! Death is life´s engine! Nothing can't be more natural and balanced and perfect.... Without death there's no life.. If people wouldn't die the planet would be destroyed in no time... But these people are not gonna stop for a second to think about that, they´re so focused on the living healthy forever and ever thing....on their own little fates... It's actually quite funny! :))
I couldn't imagine being immortal. I can't even imagine it in an after life, let alone here on earth, but I'm chronically ill and can't imagine decades more of living in this body. So let's just very hypothetically assume these people are right and immortality is within reach - will you be suffering with a wide range of ailments during this time? No one living in constant and extreme pain wants immortality
Just my POV here. We all understand that there are five stages of life. What I'm seeing here is the first step of denial. It pains me to watch this video of individuals capitalizing on other's fears of the ending of life as we know it to be.
I just realized what that I am not the only one being terrified about death, after my mother in law died from cancer ,and watching her hanging to to life ,after seeing her in the casket, I literally became depressed, and i now know that I am suffering from death anxiety 😥
So people are saying death is natural and we should accept/appreciate it. Personally I'm not that scared of death but I'm still young so that's not a surprise. I'm more scared of my loved ones dying tbh. But should we embrace death if we don't have to? What's so moral about dying? If we cured death we would have to enact serious population control until we found another planet to live on. Or maybe discover a more permanent source of renewable energy since over population is really a problem of energy conservstion. I know that sounds crazy but it might be possible. If we lived longer maybe more people would try their hand at science and engineering since you have more time to learn and aren't forced to choose between your interests. Geniuses wouldn't have to die but could continue working and building on all the knowledge that's accumulated in their minds over hundreds years. Or maybe we could take it in turns at living, after 100 years you sleep for 100 years while others take the wheel. What I'm saying is I see no practical problem associated with long lives we couldn't deal with. It seems like because we have to die it's in our best interest to not only accept our fate but see the beauty in it. But if we didn't have to die this "death is beautifully" mentality might become less prevalent.
Agree! Why should we embrace aging only because it's what has been done for ages? did we have to embrace racism because at some point it was "normal"? Normalcy is not permanent. Curing the disease of aging would challenge everyone (who want it) to live and behave differently, including the way we care for ourselves, others and the planet.
It isn't moral, but it isn't rational to expect to live forever. You can't, carbon based life isn't meant to keep around forever. Hell, the UNIVERSE isn't meant to be around forever. In a few million years the sun will destroy the earth, an din some trillion years the universe itself will die a heat death. Nothing lasts forever. We can die trying, but we WILL die.
@@scissorman44 There's a lot of time between the 500 million years from now when the earth will become too hot for life and 80 years of life, a lot of it spent in poor health for many people.
To deny death is to deny life because its the knowledge and certainty that we will all die some day that makes life worth living. We can't hoard life nor should we try to.
I welcome death, myself, and began at about the age of 12... Self-delusion is a powerful motivator, however, making ones time while alive is a fine ideology.
Leah @TheGuardian , will this series include discussion on stem cells and organ regeneration, and the role that will play in extending the human lyfe cycle???
This information was covered at RAADfest and you can find the talks within the video collection. It is a featured topic each year, which has made outstanding progress.
RAADfest is perhaps the biggest conference for life extension and longevity content, but most definitely not the only one around the globe. This (curing aging) is where medicine is moving to (open any medical magazine from the past 3 years), and RAADfest (produced by the non-profit Coalition for Radical Life Extension) is just helping bridge the gap between research and the public, so everyone can benefit at a faster rate. Imagine a world where there is no cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's or ALS. That's what curing aging will do.
Yeah. I mean, these Boomers are obviously deluded about their own lives, but that doesn't mean we all are. What is so bad about curing all illness? We have Stockholm Syndrome when it comes to suffering.
Sure but why not taste as much life as possible. We will all die but some will die sooner and some will die a slow miserable unhealthy death, while some will live a long healthy life. Take your pick and choose your path wisely.
As one of the people interviewed said...:"What's more important than ending death"! I totally agree. Ending death means we're ending aging and the devastation of disease. Putting an end to this suffering is the most noble and humane endeavor on the planet. Let's pay attention to Aubrey de Gray's comment that the longer he lives, the longer we all will live. Think about it!
One small problem. There is no known way to feed a population of ageless humans. And, if there ever comes a time when death is "cured," those immortals among us will surely be destined to feed the remainder, the "sick" of our lot, with their invincible corpses.
I think the cycle of life and death is one of the most natural things in existence. It's a fact of life that cells age, rocks erode and time passes. Although it's scary and frightening for some people, I honestly think there is no sustainable way of having people live forever on a planet that is inevitably going to die
Our planet is a self renewing living entity that is constantly balancing and harmonising. It's actually indestructible as are our spirits. You have no idea what happens when you are unaware or 'sleeping' with our memories being wiped - renewed on a timeline that always exists to fit our reincarnation benefit. Some think we are Earth's caretakers but in fact it's Earth that takes care of us in ways you cannot ever fathom. Although we'd like to think differently, it really doesn't matter what we do, Earth does its own thing always. We are in constant amazement of its gifts to us and other living beings on the Blue Planet. Earth took care of itself long before we existed. It's us that die.
life is evaluating risk vs enjoyment. in a simplified way you could live in an induced coma on life supourt for 100 years , but is that living at all, taste the food , drink the wine, feel the sun... just not so much it kills you. life is about balance
the dude was comparing current perception on aging with the previous perception that the earth was flat and that the cosmos was a geocentric model-- was saying that one day people will look upon our views of death and aging as antiquated
That was weird! Was like watching a bunch of people at a "denial" convention.

I totally relate to her. Thanathophobia is no joke.
Me too Raina. It hurt so much but it does feel better that there are other people in the same boat as me.

Lmao
Who?
5:12 I want to know how these people came to the conclusion that "Aging is not normal or natural"
@@apolicum i think the first option is better

@Happy Hiker you got the clip of the lesbions plotting and owen jones yes I hope that flashdrive is still 1600miles
Life is cycle, death is the most important part of life, to go against it is to go insane.
It's hard to comprehend that there are ppl out there who think like this...
These people are nuts. Glad I watched part 2 first.
6:10 XD Leah you are a real trooper hosting this series

I'm only 43 and I'm already tired. I am scared of death but only because it's unknown. I honestly wouldn't want to live forever.
That's great, you win, you don't have to live forever.
It shouldn't be easy to dismiss when you are young. I'm still young and I don't dismiss it at all.
Remember the interstellar propulsion first, or this place risks to become a little... crowded.
You don't need to be an old person to feel your own mortality wtf, you'll die it's scary and it will happen its not a disease.
I'm fairly young and I still feel my mortality tangibly.
Dismissing the idea of false hope isn't about the silliness, it's about it being false hope. We're all mortal. Desiring otherwise won't change that fact
So, not dying....for Bernadeane, it seems, being comfortable in her own body means becoming the spitting image of Sia 😉
Remember to create an interstellar engine before the pill of immortality, because one only planet will be a little crowdy without dead... or maybe only the richest people could live forever? And the poor ones, as usual, will continue to die as flies?
Omg do you know how over populated this world would be. We'd have to move to Mars for sure lol
You seem to forget that as nations develop and age, fertility rate declines significantly.
To cling to the things of this life will not serve you well in the next...
Denial is futile!!! There is a time to be born, and a time to die. We need the grace to embrace both!🕊🕊🕊
No to so much denial as fear convention - a lot of scared people - and most of us are scared about something - all trying their best not to admit it and face it.
They’ve been watching too much American horror story, thinking we can really be immortal 😂
Great piece I appreciate your kindness and empathy.
Thank you H K. LG :)
Yeah, those experiences are what we need to reflect to prepare for the inevitable

Living forever is greedy, humans must die so other people can experience life
The planet is over populated now. Where do they expect s all to live 🙄
'We're not going to die, and neither are any of you'
I wonder how much money they made off of those people...
You're assuming that we don't experience a revolution in neuroscience or the science of consciousness, which is literally happening right now.
What a positive message. Who wants to really die? People can accept death and that doesn't change the fact on how horrible death is. To know there are people studying, doing researches , etc about staying alive as long as we can in a healthy state, like why not? I am in!
Where are we going to put all the new people if we don't shuffle off this mortal coil and make room?
Seems like a sad group of old people that can’t accept their fate.
Is wanting to live for longer sad
50 life extension supplements a day ? even "insane amount" would be an understatement
I just realized what that I am not the only one being terrified about death, after my mother in law died from cancer ,and watching her hanging to to life ,after seeing her in the casket, I literally became depressed, and i now know that I am suffering from death anxiety 😥
You should have been excited..the mil is gone!
Why is aging unnatural?
"The earth was flat at one point" "aging wasn't natural" yea, that's because people died before they ever got old to begin with
To deny death is to deny life because its the knowledge and certainty that we will all die some day that makes life worth living. We can't hoard life nor should we try to.
I welcome death, myself, and began at about the age of 12... Self-delusion is a powerful motivator, however, making ones time while alive is a fine ideology.

How to become a vampire "I dont smoke, I dont drink, I take 50 supplements a day - and I stuff my face with botox."
Every soul shall taste death..
Sure but why not taste as much life as possible. We will all die but some will die sooner and some will die a slow miserable unhealthy death, while some will live a long healthy life. Take your pick and choose your path wisely.
Including death.
Think about it!
death is the only constant in life and everything inbetween is a dream ......
Death is not the enemy. Fear is the enemy.
I find it ironic, that a woman who finds almonds a bad thing to put in her body has a face full of botox abd fillers!!!!
Right... &when people stop dying, where will we all live? There is only so much room &so many resources on one planet.

It doesn’t matter, nobody lives forever. Those that think that living forever is possible, are in a state of dream land.
One small problem. There is no known way to feed a population of ageless humans. And, if there ever comes a time when death is "cured," those immortals among us will surely be destined to feed the remainder, the "sick" of our lot, with their invincible corpses.
I thought this series would be a bit heavy but I couldn't help but laugh at this episode.
One of Gary Oldman's lesser known pieces
Thanks for the comment @williamh. Hope your enjoy the rest of the series! LG

life is evaluating risk vs enjoyment. in a simplified way you could live in an induced coma on life supourt for 100 years , but is that living at all, taste the food , drink the wine, feel the sun... just not so much it kills you. life is about balance
When they said the earth was flat I checked out.
the dude was comparing current perception on aging with the previous perception that the earth was flat and that the cosmos was a geocentric model-- was saying that one day people will look upon our views of death and aging as antiquated
