Composer Alexander Litvinovsky worked on the suite ‘Pelléas and Mélisande’ in the summer of 2021. His score became the embodiment of the figurative content of the play of the same name by the classic of Belgian literature Maris Maeterlinck. At one time, Alexander Litvinovsky wrote music for the theatrical performance 'Pelléas and Melisande'. The successful artistic result inspired a new idea: on the basis of this musical material the composer decided to create a suite for a string orchestra. However, the deepening into the symbolism of Maeterlinck's play led Alexander Litvinovsky to the need to carefully rework the finished numbers, expand the dramatic context and, in fact, write a new, independent orchestral work.
In the history of ‘Pelléas da Mélisande’ there is a lot of mystical, encrypted, unsaid. The fictional kingdom of Alemond exists outside of a certain era, outside of reality and time. The strange and infantile characters in the play live in their own temporal dimension. The events are driven not by the actions of the heroes, but by their reflections, spontaneous impressions, reasoning, exchange of emotions, clarification of relationships.
The orchestral embodiment of the imaginative world of such a drama demanded professional ingenuity and virtuoso skill from the composer, who strove to avoid monotony and static in the new suite. He embodied in music an active internal plot, gave dynamism, alternating tempos and rhythms, timbre nuances, sound colors of modes, tonalities, creating an amazing theatricality of effective episodes and a genre variety of ancient dances.
The author of the suite 'Pelléas and Mélisande' does not seek to experiment with the latest musical techniques, he is interested in maximizing the singing nature of string instruments, the beauty of sound recording, which helps to reveal the emotional purity of the images of the embodied plot. And connoisseurs of Alexander Litvinovsky's work will recognize his bright, attractive author's style, which combines elements of baroque, romantic and postmodern music.

Alexander Litvinovsky was born in 1962 in Minsk, Belarus. He graduated from the Belarusian Academy of Music in 1987 and received a postgraduate degree in 1991. His music is influenced by Strawinsky, but also by the music of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, and therefore ranges from traditional to avant-garde.
Grateful to the channel for posting such great art.

Hi Sam. I'm a jazz historian (82 y.o.), played some drums in the sixties (what a magnificent decade that was !). Started listening to jazz at 15 y.o. though I was keeping an attentive ear to classical music (my first love: Rachmaninov's piano con. N° 2). Then when I reached roughly 65, something clicked into my mind and if upto this age the listening ratio of jazz vs. classical was 70% to 30%, now it is 10% to 90%. I suspect this could be due to ageing. Be as it may, it raises some thinking doesn't it? Keep discovering new pieces as some of them will mesmerise you.

too often the new-classical (not really neo-classical) music is too simple in its melodies, too predictable in its harmonies, rhythms, and dynamics. this is most definitely not!
i love music that draws me into thought, not that lulls me into an emotional stupor or even sleep.
i am very grateful to you at Halidon for introducing me to Litvinovski's œuvres.

Why is Litvinovsky not performed more often? Have I completely missed him? I never heard of him until recently but cannot imagine why he is nor championed by contemporaries and anyone who enjoys modern music.

Does anyone know if there are any interviews with Alexander Litvinovsky?

I have admired the music of Prokofiev for many years and was just today quite taken on hearing Litvinovsky for the first time. Naturally I googled him to find out about his life and times and discovered he is far more famous for having been murdered by Vladimir Putin.

Hello John, we're glad you enjoy Litvinovsky's work! Luckily he's alive and well and we'll be releasing a new suite for strings and mandolin by him soon so you might want to watch this space 🤗

I am not a fan of classical music. The only way I enjoy it is if it has been in a film that I love. But this - especially movement III - was incredible.

I don't understand the cameraman's choice not to frame the musicians playing the solo. What a shame, bad choice.

And the babes. Always show the babes. Even in a babe-sparse environment. Like, one cellist, one violinist, and an apostate violist.

The conductor flops his hands around too much. Annoying. He doesn't even keep the beat of the music. Just flopsy wopsy.

That's my only problem with it also. I love the music but never watch the video because he makes me laugh. 😅

Hello Catherine, you've got nothing to apologise for! It's great to find you here, and how wonderful it is to hear that you enjoyed listening to Litvinovsky's most recent suite performed by the Metamorphose String Orchestra with Conductor Pavel Lyubomudrov 😍 We agree with you and have been completely in love with Pélleas et Mélisandre even since it came out 💘
