AWESOME! Don´t be thrown off by the theory. Sometimes it´s just as much fun if you don´t know what´s happening and just put your fingers on random frets! *What´s your favorite chord? Drop 'em in the comments!*
I like using Em9 and Cadd9 instead of the usual E and C chords. I also love the Dadd9add11. I don't even know what those add chords are, but they seem great lol
Hi Paul, i already let you a coment below, check it out later if you wish! I don't have a favorite, but a few minutes ago i was playing a song with C7 that i really like. Cheers!
'Partial' chords with drones - simple to play chord-based melodies by moving around the neck with minimal 'shape' changes, similar to your first example Paul. E.g. in A minor, 2 finger chords (low E muted throughout) - build the shape changes by following the A natural minor scale (Aeolian), then pay around the neck to find a melody. I think the chord names are vaguely right here - easier to go by shape!: Amadd2 x07500, G6/A x05400, Fmaj7b5/A x03200, Bmadd11/A x09700, C#m7/A x0 11 900, D6add2/A x0 12 11 00
Excellent lesson. Thank you Paul, for NOT trying to mention your website, page, etc, 100 times during the lesson. And thank you for making lessons that are challenging without having to go through every little detail. Your videos are far and away the best I have come across on the internet. Glad I signed up for your Patreon page, its been a great investment. Keep this content coming!
This is one of my favorite lessons you’ve done so far. I stumbled upon that first example triad when I was first getting into playing guitar, and all my more musically experienced friends told me those notes didn’t go together. I’m so glad you made this, so I can pick up where I ditched it over 10 years ago.
You always make stuff like these very simple to understand. Wow! Thank you! It took me years to understand these (pre-UA-cam days), and I had to print lots of tutorials that I had to read. I self-studied them, stopped for a few days when overwhelmed, then tried to understand them again, then another rest.. And here you are, never fails to make them very simple to understand. Again, thanks Paul!
Paul I don't ever comment on guitar videos..cause it's often a waste of time, but all of your videos are top-notch quality. People who look at your videos will definitely improve not only their guitar skills but also their musical interpretation and experience. Thanks and keep it up.
I'm really obsessed with that first example. I feel heavy ambient tones that give a melancholy feel, great stuff to experiment with, and to seek out more chords related to these.
For me these unusual chords are your most valuable lessons. The implementation is quite simple and the difference on the sound when you replace these chords compared to the most simple ones are notable and amazing. Thanks again Paul (and sorry for bad english)
I LOVE this video. Editing, nice song examples, explanations are thorough but not so long I’d put down my guitar, and unique musical content. Oh and great tone as always.
Despite the fact that I am a total luddite, I have now joined Patreon simply so that I can support your channel. Your content is truly excellent and I really look forward to all of your updates. I remember back when we use to watch *television*, for Pete's sake. This is so much better! Beats the hell out of Mork and Mindy, that's for sure.
Your tone sounds absolutely divine in this video! Love it! Oh, edit to add that I’m already in love with the first chord progression-right up my alley! Thanks
Thanks Paul! Another amazing video, great topic and presentation, just the right amount of time spent on every chord. So glad I discovered this channel recently and glad to be a Patron.
Thanks Paul. Your explanations and manner let me see that all my sweating over “jazzy” chords, what they are, how they are structured IS worthwhile. Another great video. Wish you gave lessons!
Favorite chord is stacking four 5ths. E.g. E B F# C# (which would make it E 6/9 no 3rd). It works both in place of a minor chord (implying Dorian mode because of the 6) or in place of any major chord. The way I fret it is by barring the 7th fret and playing 7th fret on A string, 9th fret on D string with the ring finger, muting G string with the ring finger, 7th on B (index finger bar), 9th fret on E string with the pinky.
That was really inspiring, Paul. A very good sequence of guitar pureness. Everyone here loves your tones. How about a video on your strat setup? You know... Springs, neck relief, action, etc. And tell us about how those things relate to your playing style! Freaking good job, man!
@ Wesley Dunn, Hey man, I want your job! Especially if ya get to watch these killer videos & get paid!! Ha! Hmmm, doesn't that make you a Professional UA-camr!? ;)
I've learned more theory from you than anywhere or anybody else combined so thank you for that! That said, this one scrambled my head a little bit so I'm just going to copy where you put your fingers lol. Look forward to more of your theory series!
Example 1 sounds very Coldplay, possibly due to the rhythm in some part. I like that chord, it took me a couple of minutes to work out what was going on. Root - maj3 - maj7 - maj3. I like how it's related to a C#5 chord (with a minor 6th in the bass). Thanks for the video.
practicing these odd shapes can really help you get out of a platuea I made a list of shapes catagorized by which string is first i just practice them and combine them at random ways
Amazing. Unlike some guitar teachers, you have great taste and compositional ability. Too often, teachers settle for generic blues riffs because they're not actually creative.
As allways, you're a genius.. The Einstein of the guitar :p Love all kinds of major7add5 chords but you do music with more than just one chord so it's hard to tell witch one is my favourite
Hey Paul! I have been wathcing your videos for a little while now and they made me pick up the guitar and build my own chords and analyse the ones I already know. So keep those theory lessons up! I have a question regarding those 6th, 11th and 13th notes and so on: Could you do a video only about those "special" notes and where to use them? If they fit everywhere or just in major/minor chords? That would be awesome! Greetings from Germany!
Once I was just playing some random chords and then found something like a F5/G# and later realised it was the same as an inverted Fm. So I wrote a tune with that in mind.
Hi Paul. I 'd like to ask for a lesson that explains the naming of some chords, like the ones you used in this video. Taking random notes that sound good is very difficult for me at the moment to name them as chords, therefore it's challenging for me to know how to use them. Thank you for these lessons, you can tell the amount of effort you put into them.
I love that sound of the fretted B string at a higher pitch than the following E string open (at around 10:00). Gilmour used that a bit. It has such a lovely dreamy sound. I found that wrapping my thumb over to voice the Bb bass added a nice flavour too, what do you call that ?
Quick question from a newbie at guitar, in the first example, what’s the difference between the Amaj7 and E7 chord shapes? Everything is the same except for E7 having one finger one fret lower
Hi Paul, thanks for inspire to be better and to go always for a better sound. Can you tell me the Specs of you red Stratocaster. Or if you have described it on a previous video that I missed. I’d appreciate it.
AWESOME! Don´t be thrown off by the theory. Sometimes it´s just as much fun if you don´t know what´s happening and just put your fingers on random frets! *What´s your favorite chord? Drop 'em in the comments!*
Probably the open E chord due to its sheer musical complexity
Make some lesson on psychedelic scales nd progression
I like using Em9 and Cadd9 instead of the usual E and C chords. I also love the Dadd9add11. I don't even know what those add chords are, but they seem great lol

Damn you have all the best sponsors man
Anton Kjellberg Are you related to Pewdiepie?
Divyesh Vartha Maybe somehow - I'm Danish so we're basicly neighbours
"There's an ocean between us but yeah.. we're basically neighbors"
Shay C I think a small puddle of water would describe the situation better than the word ocean ;)
How about Pauls favorite beard shapes.
How about no

The Emaj7#11 sound and the way you articulate it makes for me a definition of what I call a Buckethead sound - thank you for resolving that enigma :)
Love this. The fast change from the 2nd fret to the 9th is a challenge.
Paul I don't ever comment on guitar videos..cause it's often a waste of time, but all of your videos are top-notch quality. People who look at your videos will definitely improve not only their guitar skills but also their musical interpretation and experience. Thanks and keep it up.

I can almost hear Chino giving back drop vocals if it had a little more distortion. Still beautiful on it's own
For me these unusual chords are your most valuable lessons. The implementation is quite simple and the difference on the sound when you replace these chords compared to the most simple ones are notable and amazing. Thanks again Paul (and sorry for bad english)
Those are some GREAT chords that add a lot of color to very basic chord progressions. I LOVE THEM. Gonna use some of them for my songs! Thanks!
I LOVE this video. Editing, nice song examples, explanations are thorough but not so long I’d put down my guitar, and unique musical content. Oh and great tone as always.
Best guitar youtuber out there! Always amazing content with a humorous edge.
Sudden influx of shoegaze bands to Paul's channel
I was thinking that...
I remember how life changing it was when I learned these chords. Great video as always, Paul!
Despite the fact that I am a total luddite, I have now joined Patreon simply so that I can support your channel. Your content is truly excellent and I really look forward to all of your updates. Wow! Always something new to learn. Very cool
I come here for those juicy tones
Christopher Johnson I know right?
lol yes... sometimes I play his videos on repeat just because his guitar tone is just special
Thanks Paul! Another amazing video, great topic and presentation, just the right amount of time spent on every chord. So glad I discovered this channel recently and glad to be a Patron.
Best guitar related video maker on the market!
I love your style Paul! Jumping right into examples and still leaving room for a touch of creative comedy. Keep at it! ✌
Thanks Paul. Your explanations and manner let me see that all my sweating over “jazzy” chords, what they are, how they are structured IS worthwhile. Another great video. Wish you gave lessons!
Beautiful sounds here. Great instruction. Love the strat.
I got a bit lost from the 6 minute mark. On screen chord diagrams would help a lot.
Video qualities getting better and better!
Damn Paul, your videos are geting better and better... in all aspects, but more importantly in content.
dude you are amazing, huge fan!
best mentor on youtube hands down
keep up the good work!
So much coolness: the chords, this classic Strat, and this guys shirt! Lol.

RC32 ...ha! Same here... I can't wait to get off work

@ Wesley Dunn, Hey man, I want your job! Especially if ya get to watch these killer videos & get paid!! Ha! Hmmm, doesn't that make you a Professional UA-camr!? ;)
A Rottie ,i was watching this video on a my lunch break
Great video! Paul you are such a great communicator, there's so much to take away from your content!
I've learned more theory from you than anywhere or anybody else combined so thank you for that! That said, this one scrambled my head a little bit so I'm just going to copy where you put your fingers lol. Look forward to more of your theory series!
Awesome video! Great tuition, great production and I loved the sarcastic "sponsor" message ;-). Keep up the amazing work Paul! :-)
those are may favorite shapes...so happy that you find them awesome
Thank you paul ! You are my greatest guitar teacher
This was really cool. Awesome to see something a bit alt. heavier
You're really helping me learn how to play guitar. Thanks and keep up the good work!

God, I wish you could turn this into a legit song! Such a beautiful tone! You are a straight up guitar God, my friend! Keep up the amazing work!
You are one tasteful player, Paul!
Love your content Paul. Always interesting and useful tips! Would love to see a complete guide/guitar practice routine/book from you!
That first example sounds a lot like a Built To Spill chord progression. Love it.
Nice progression, great lesson!
practicing these odd shapes can really help you get out of a platuea
I made a list of shapes catagorized by which string is first
i just practice them and combine them at random ways
Wonderful lesson Paul :-) thanks for sharing
MAN those chords taste good in my ears
Great lesson Again! Thanks a lot
Thanks for the idea men ☺
Can't wait to try these 😊
Awesome stuff! I have been using some of those already, but now I can connect them better with other chords.
I love the maj7/min7 example. I use those chords a lot but not in that context!
Amazing. Unlike some guitar teachers, you have great taste and compositional ability. Too often, teachers settle for generic blues riffs because they're not actually creative.
Love those sounds... Very nice thanks!
I'm glad you are actually doing Guitar lessons rather than flexing the gear others get from their sponsors. It's really refreshing.
that guitar tone is so good.
Thanks Paul!
These chord shapes remimde of the wonderful Japanese math rock band, Tricot.
Those chords sound so delightful
I love that color on the strat
My GOWD. I hope the is Not a Quiz after this one!!? Ha!
Some really sweet cords. Thanx for sharing them!!
Every 30 seconds or so I feel a little bit of my brain leaking out so I need to take a break. Cool stuff man!
Those chords sound like My Bloody Valentine, love it :)
Thank you very much once again!
Practically, a Blonde Redhead tutorial.
I don't like to play chords most of the time lol! ...but somehow Paul has that magic ability of making us all play them all !!!!!
Excellent lesson! I think chords lessons are very important. Rhythm guitar is about 99% of a song after all
Keep on cranking bro thank you for your videos I appreciate you much love and happiness slice and dice
I need to find this sponsor named Paul Davids, sounds like a cool channel!
subscribed because of the sponsor 😂😂
I love the low key burn jokes in this video :)
I enjoy the E7(#9) chord, most famously used in Purple Haze
THIS IS WHAT IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR
As allways, you're a genius..
The Einstein of the guitar :p
Love all kinds of major7add5 chords but you do music with more than just one chord so it's hard to tell witch one is my favourite
I really like your clothing style!
That sounds amazing!
Your sound is amazing
Hey Paul!
I have been wathcing your videos for a little while now
and they made me pick up the guitar and build my own chords and
analyse the ones I already know. So keep those theory lessons up!
I have a question regarding those 6th, 11th and 13th notes and so on:
Could you do a video only about those "special" notes and where to use them?

Greetings from Germany!
Can I like this twice? This is TOTALLY my thing.
This are what I wanted always..THANKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK YOU....
Fmaj7 add 13 can actually be called Fmaj13 I guess. great lesson again btw. I love your videos
Wow ... great man.... good job...👌
You had me at Amaj7...add 5!
Once I was just playing some random chords and then found something like a F5/G# and later realised it was the same as an inverted Fm. So I wrote a tune with that in mind.
Love this video!
Beautiful chords and nice Ed reference..:)
Oh wow! Captain America plays guitar just like ringing a bell! 😅😂❤️❤️❤️
Thanks master
What chords do the Gypsy Kings use ? I’ve watched their videos many times and some chords look totally unfamiliar . Excellent Lessons Thank You
The intro jam reminds me a lot of Covered in Rain by John Mayer
This is a killer vid!

Great sound
2:21 Chord from "Miss You Love".
That was funny Poul.
Auful sounding chords somds like my problem...lol
Amaj7 slide up two frets
D and Bm G

Those first chords really remind me of a band called Microwave, check em out!! Personally one of my favorites by them is Whimper :)

Hi Paul, thanks for inspire to be better and to go always for a better sound. Can you tell me the Specs of you red Stratocaster. Or if you have described it on a previous video that I missed. I’d appreciate it.

I really like the fmaj7add13 or whatever and the amaj7
