  • Pretty much the deepest canyon on earth, Colca Canyon in Peru is impossibly huge, scorchingly hot and unbelievably beautiful. We spent 3 very sizeable, unguided days trekking from top to bottom and back again.

This is my favourite of this years releases thus far! I still can't believe how well the 3100 shoots!

Brings back memories. I did a three day trek in 1999, still recognise many of the sights, but one thing is striking, back then virtually everything was still abandoned after the civil conflict if the 80's & 90's & those who were left were unusually timid for Peruvian mountain folk. Good to see things have improved for those who live in the canyon, truly a magnificent if not harsh place.

Went in 2022. People still go and there’s lots of nice hostels with pools and stuff. They’re thriving down there

I definitely recommend to do this trekking. I went through a different spot, I didn't see that waterfall and I spent the night at Oasis, a cool place, but didn't seem rudiment as that shown in the video... That was the best travel experience I ever had... a Condor flew right above my head so I could sense how much they stink! hahahah That was awesome... walking by this amazing landscape. I hope i come back there with my woman and try this spot with the waterfall.

Hey Guys! Going to Peru next month and Colca Canyon is on my list. Some questions for you...
    1) How did you manage to trek by yourself?
    2) I tried to find the Malata Hostel but its neither on Hostel World nor Hostelbookers?
    3) Is it safe to do that by yourself?
    Thank you so much!

      Hey Dohm & Dane,
We'll try and help out as much as we can.
      1) It's super easy to do it by yourself! We're incredibly glad we didn't book with an agency or go with a big group. All you need is one of the many canyon maps in Cabanaconde or any guide book. Choose which end you want to start at and ask for directions to get there. From there, make your way to the bottom and link up a path to a different way out or make a loop circuit. There are only a few ways in and out so you can't get lost.
      2) Malata Hostel is extremely rustic. It is owned and ran by an awesome old gentleman who was incredibly kind and thoughtful. Because it's so low-technology, there is no way to book it or reserve a room. You'll have to get there in good time... but almost everyone we met goes to camp at the Oasis. (Where a real hostel is) Malata Hostel was an amazing experience and the owner made us breakfast too!
      3) Other than an angry dog at one point which we scared away with rocks, we feel that Colca Canyon is extremely safe and welcoming to trekkers. As always it's best to travel with a companion or two and don't be foolish. But thats just common sense.
      You won't be disappointed!
