Here's a Throwback amp from the early 90's when most car audio was made in the USA. The Lanzar Optidrive 500. This amp cost over $1000 USD back in 1993 and was considered "big power" with 1000W rating at 4 ohms bridged or 2 ohms stereo.

we sold lanzar back then and RARELY had bad ones. even when people beat the snot out of them they still hardly ever came back. built like tanks. I miss those days
Can you tell if this amp had been recapped?
@@joesshows6793
He sold them.
The majority of salesman are not technicians. Their job is to sell and make as much commission as humanly possible.
As did we, the reason we rarely had issues with them is because the original manufacturer gave an F about their products. The new manufacturer, Maxxsonics doesn’t gaf.
@@joesshows6793 the caps look very original in this amp.
You know capitalizing "rarely" doesnt make it any better 😂🤣 makes it worse cause you had to convince yourself on that.
I remember when I first saw Lanzar at a competition in a blazer in 89’/90’ and remember hearing great things about them! Always performing well and heard they lasted# And yes back then 500 watts was moving something; nowday off the charts of Thousands of watts in a vehicle is hard to believe! Old School HiFonics and AutoTek by (Zed Audio)! Those were the days! #🔊❤️
1:49 actually it was a Mickey Mouse program!
Autotek 7100 bts for the win 50x50 -- 180w bridged mono. $399 msrp. Running 2 punch 10s-- passive realistic coil x-overs . Worth every penny.
ALL ZED Audio(Amp 👑) amps back then Ruling the car audio scene! I had many different brand amps from them back in late 80’s/early90’s! Car Audio “ L-E-G-E-N-D-S!”#HiFonics#Autotek#ZEDAudio#🔊❤️@@andrewmitchell2666
Lanzar used to be some good quality, extremely durable amps. I miss those old days where a majority of manufacturers made quality, and rated amps accurately. Thanks Big D for another great vid, and I appreciate the little Office Space clip! That’s my favorite movie!
Oh, oh, and I almost forgot. I'm going to need you to come in on Sunday too, mkay.
It’s a jump to conclusions mat!
I had that line from Bill Lumbergh as a ringtone assigned to my boss back in the day. His name was Bill and he would usually call me into work. Lol
What about today, is today the worst day of your life?
Yeah-
Wow, that’s messed up!
Can this lanzar optidrive 500 handle 1 ohm ? Cuz I have 12” Shock Industry 1,500w rms and gain is less than have and it’s making her slapped limeif there’s no tomorrow. Sweet amp I love it…
Old school Lanzar ftw! This very amp has been my daily for 29 years. Quality, awesome sound and performance still after all these years.
Awesome quality amp for sure!
I’m still using it now 2023/15/11 with Shock industry 1,500w rms 2,000w peak . Unbelievable bass.
I had a opti 150 back then running two sets of punch power mids, 2ohm stereo. Got it when a local audio shop was closing down for around 200 hundred. Thanks for the video Big D!
Opti's were the shit back then. We were scared at competitions sometimes when setups had Lanzar Opti inside.
There's a special place in my heart for old school Lanzar. My brother had a lowered Nissan 720 with a Lanzar Mosfet 50 on Lanzar seperates and a Mosfet 100 on (2) Lanzar Zr12"s. The first Lanzar logo on all of it (upside-down triangle with speaker in the center)
She looks beautiful on the inside layout board Lanzar Audio for the win
I ran this amp with 2 TRI-VENT BAZOOKA TRIANGLE SUBS AND TUBES and they would absolutely pound your head love your old school videos ive been into stereo systems since around 1993 back when a punch 150 and 2 savard raps was cool
old school for the win! I used to compete with Lanzar in SQ back in the day. Quality equipment! Never let me down. Sad what they have turned this name into these days.
I had an OptiDrive 2500 on two Orion XTR 15's as a teenager in the 90's...amazing quality, sound and reliability.
Back in 94 I walked into a swapmeet to buy a couple of subs. I literally knew nothing about subwoofers. For some reason two 10" Lanzars caught my eye and I bought them. Man they are still my favorite subs I've ever owned. Lanzar was a top notch car audio company back in them days
Finally an Amp that I had back in the day and yes it was $1000. I had it hooked up to (4) 10’s the (2) 15’s in my all Lanzar system. Thanks Big D
My buddy Joe ran Lanzar back then in a Honda hatch back and that system pounded
Had one of these on 2 jl 15w6s in a big and sealed box....maaaan that was some good times lol
Folks think I'm lying when I say Lanzar held world records back in its day. They did and they were badass. Then Pyramid got involved and it all went to hell in a hand basket.
30+ years ago I met Mick Fleetwood and got to pay with his BMW with Lanzar amps in it. I remember asking him why he used Lanzar amps and he simply said "Mate, its because it sounds JUST like it should and is so loud its like when I play live" Cool dude. Car reproduced drums like none other.
Sweet old school goodness right there thanks for sharing.
That is one sexy of an amp guts pic I have not seen in a long time! Love through hole components!
I still have three Opti 2500s, new in the boxes from a project that never got finished. I know a lot of newer class D amps push a lot more power, but I'm still in love with the old school amps. Lanzar was always known to be ultra reliable. I haven't decided whether to keep and use them or sell and get more powerful amps.
I'm subscribed, Big D! I like the old school videos, the new school videos, and the BMX stuff
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Man that bring back memories had one in 98 and came second in spl comp local circuit city with a think was 15" pyramid super blue home made box in my cousin's Ford exp and beat out thousands dollar systems was laugh at when we pulled up the test area and hit highest number and only got beat by last car by .3 above we had so many people swarm car to see what slammed so hard witch back Windows were tinted trying to see what was in there and there face dropped when open hatch to plywood, painted caulked joints 80 sub and lanzar amp not at all professional install we just did it for fun we just show up to buy things and by accident they were having comp on that sat. and we took time in having the position perfectly face for hitting hard and never thought some country kids had chance well we came away with job offers cause we built cars and we willingly to learn everything we could to make it look professional.
I worked as Assembler
At Canoga Park City .
For warehouse Lanzar.
At 90s. A lot Memories came.
Getting a demo of the Lanzar van is what got me in to car audio, good stuff Big D🤙
I miss this old stuff. PPI art series, and phoenix gold TI amps were some of my favorites.
oh man this brings back memories. i had one back in 2001 and then in 2003 i found another of the same model . i ran both at audio comps and they were so power hungry. i have one still but it has a power supply issue. they sound really good tho. thanks for posting this video .
Old School Lanzar Goodness!
👍🏻🔊👍🏻
My buddies mom used to date one of the big wigs from Lanzar we all had sick systems we didn't pay for, he was always bringing their new stuff over and giving it to us used to get a big discount on stuff from Parts Express using his name too
I subscribed to car audio and electronics for the price guide before I could even drive. Lanzar is one of many brands that went to crap before I could ever get a build together but I remember thinking their subs looked crazy good.
My first sub amp was a Lanzar. Bought a 15” Lanzar sub as well. Amazing products back in the day. This was ‘96
I remember everything they sold saying World Champion Car Audio as well.
Was it the Lanzar max or the OPTi... because that sub is still relevant today
I think alot of people fail to understand the sound quality of these amplifiers. Its always felt far superior since we went to ClassD, and lord forbid the distortion on a Full bridge amplifier.
My first 2 amps were an opti 160 and 500. Loved them. Great amps for the time. IMO
I still have an old American Lanzar amp new in box that I'd bought for a project back in the day that never happened .
More old School amps videos Big D it really be appreciated .
I have had my 1986 buick regal for 28 years and that amp has been in the trunk the whole time.... Never had one single problem with it still works... 3 noise ordnance tickets and sent me to jail once in the late 90s... Real bassheads understand, we didnt follow that turn it down rule very well!lol
I love it - back when old school power was a dollar a watt. We may have amps 10% the size, double the efficiency and ten times cheaper, but I can pretty much guarantee you will not be testing them in 2053 and having them still make full rated power!
I love the old school amps videos more than anything ❤
Thanks 😊
love the old school amp dynos.....id love to see an alphasonik ma2100 test, the class a stereo amp
I may have a PMA-2100, I'll have to check
@@wal2 i had an ma2100, before it was pma.......ran hot, low efficiency prolly converting to heat instead of power 🤷♂
That would have been a great amp for its time. When I first got into audio in the early 2000s, 1k rms was a big deal. We were paying $1/watt back then.
Thank you for this test. I've been waiting for you to kick out an old-school amp test. I appreciate all the time you put into these videos. These old-school amp tests are why I started watching your videos all the way back to 2008. Thanks again
Reminds me of the old school sound stream amps. This amp is pretty impressive, really surprised me. Absolutely great video
I remember when my best friend saved up and actually bought this very same model amp . We put it on 4 15s and beat the hell outta them. Up till then he could only afford Pyramid. Love these tests and love your videos. Thank you for keeping Old School Stereos alive and kickin.
I had the opti 200 many years ago . I ran that thing so hard 8 volts input signal and ran at 1.3 ohms. 3 kicker 12s. . Was very impresive for the time
The long excursion while playing "Bass I Love You" is due low frequencies (single digits in parts!) is WAY below the box tuning frequency. The woofer unloads and acts like it's free air. Some woofers don't like this and can exceed x-mech. You know that extra loud clacking noise where the voice coil former strikes the back plate! These amps can play down to VERY low frequencies and should be HPF'd at 25Hz or so when driving vented boxes.
I believe that's called cliping
I still have three of these. Along with every other amp they made. Some black some purple. I bought in 93 when I graduated. Had two twelves and two fifteens. On an opti 160 and a pair of 500s Ford escort. No electrical.
My dad was talking to me about how he was 10k into his sub system back in the 90s 1000 watt amp custom sub/speaker box was a very high end system back then. Still had the truck but lost it in a forest fire in 2018
Classic amps thanks Big D
I like the wall with all the Alphasonik equipment. One of my first amps was an old Deltasonik amp that turned on by routing the speaker outs from the radio through the amp, it was a weird setup but it worked.
I have the 10k opti amp now love it
I had that exact amp on a jbl gti15 bolted into a reinforced back deck on a 90 maxima with an a-periodic pad bolted to the interior side of the deck & it sounded pretty darn good!
Love these reviews.
Derek, love you videos bro! Couldn't tell ya how many I've watched over the years. I had 2 opti drive amps back in the day, they worked GREAT! ran hot, but never had any issues.
I had a couple of different Lanzar Amps way back then and they were good..
I love all your videos.
When Lanzar was still Lanzar.
Had one back the days lower model hooked up with two 10’s original SAS Bazookas on a Oldsmobile Cutlass was bumping back in the 90’s good to see this Lanzar amps still around 👍🏻
That Goofy clip got me. At one point I had so much HiFi stuff that the wires behind my stereo when bundled up were bigger than my biceps. I guess that makes me some kind of a nerd or geek even though I could curl 200lbs! I miss the way that system sounded...
Great quality from back in the day! A Lanzar amp I bought in the 2010s could not compare! Great vid!
Thanks for testing this one. I recently confirmed some of the are 2ohm mono capable. But they needed to have a fan added. recently picked up a 200TMS. Looking for that 4 channel though.
Solid power for 93. The efficiency staying the same across the ohm loads is pretty impressive as well.
Appreciate you Big D!!
Thanks big D for this old school amps dyno back then we can only dream about having this top of the line amps…
I just subscribed btw 😊
Regulated was what my stock alternator liked back in the 90s!
Like Warren B?
That enclosure is sick
Solid choice back in the day
Thanks big d. Ur the greatest 👍
Hey Big D. I always appreciate u with these old school amps..... Better sounding amps and I hope young folks can take a moment to see how well engineered they were
Any amp with jump wires inside is not well engineered.
My cousin was competing with lanzar amps in NM back in the 90s in a Nissan hardbody
Sad that lanzar went the way of so many other companies, will always be my favorite old school companies, lanzar ruled the streets in our small Louisiana town back in the 90s
This brings back memories I ran the opti 200 and 2 dual voice coil Orion intense 15 I hit 147.7 dB those were the days
I ran this amp with 2 TRI-VENT BAZ 9:14 9:16 9:27 9:28 9:29 9:50 OOKA TRIANGLE SUBS AND TUBES and they would absolutely pound your head love your old school videos ive been into stereo systems since around 1993 back when a punch 150 and 2 savard raps was cool🎉😢
First time I experienced bass was in the Lanzar Astro Van. Was right before I git my license and we all know where all my extra money went.
My first amp was a Lanzar 50c optidrive.
Beautiful old school chassis. Functional giant heatsink. Todays amps should never change
Lanzar 50 was a beast for me in early days
That was great power way back then.
If I was able to buy this in my young 20s when this was new, the store would have seen my O face.
Back in 93 if you had 500 to 1200 you was the man
I saw a test of this amp in one of the car audio magazines and it did over 1500 watts at two ohm mono before clipping. With 14 pair of Sanken brand tip35/tip36c bipolar output devices it was not a strain for the amp. Among the best class ab designs out there.
I can see why it was so expensive... it actually makes rated power!
Man I remember there hearse in Albuquerque NM back in the late 80s early 90s. It was called earthquake. And that's exactly what it did. Created a mini quake. Well maybe a large quake. LOL
I still run a old school lanzar 6 way crossover in my tahoe
Had a opti 50 c Once. Beast of an amp
I enjoy pretty much everything you put out. I believe we are the same generation. I grew up in fhe 80’s with a tail and spiked hair, wearing a red MJ jacket while riding my Hutch windstyler upto the smoke shop to buy some topps baseball cards lol. Minus the jacket. Possibly in Z Cavariccis though😂. Wasnt huge into car audio then since I was just a pup, but I remember dudes with I-Rocs and foxbodys bummpin down the avenue with some weak ass bass haha.
Lanzar subwoofers were darn good too back in the day, long excursion and big motor assemblies. This was when lanzar was in its prime.
Keep it up with old school videos! I wanna see that Sunkyong on the dyno next!
It will be shown in about a month. Several videos already ahead of it. Got some cool old skool stuff upcoming
Big D, what's that Pioneer hanging on the wall. I remember the look of it well! And thank you for all the Videos man Love them.!
had a friend with a couple of these lanzar opti drives in his rx7 with 4 12 inch lanzar LX something speakers and he blew the rear window out , he was using an epicenter octave booster thingy and that thing was just insane. he owned the store so he had all the best stuff in his rig , post falls idaho late 90s.
Had a old vibe 1200 on 2 jl w4's back 20 some years ago. Loved that amp. Sold my system and within a week someone stole it from him (whole car)
I have MEI amp from 1991 an push on bridge 500wrms
upvoted for 'O' face meme. Well done.
I showed her my Oh face, Oh Oh, Oh. Office Space, Mike Judd.
I have one of the original 50c's from the 90's, collecting dust in my garage.
Oh man that's too bad. Really cool amp 😎
@@wal2 That's why I've held on to it since the 90's, haha. It used to power 4 Lanzar DC12's.
I’ll buy it . Ur lanzar optidrive drive 50c I have the optidrive 500
Man that thing is awesome. Tried to tell these kids Lanzar was no joke back in the day. Do you have any opti drives from the 2000s? They had some subs that were pretty good back then too
Good stuff
Back in ’91, I had a Autotek 600 black version. Would love to see it dynoed if they still exist.
Nice amp
That is a lot of power for back then. I owned a Opti 200 and a 160. Brother had a Opti 500 and a Lanzar Brute Force think it was rated 450x2. I know it was huge and heavy
Man I miss the old days. These days I'm worried about having my nice car stolen if I put really nice gear inside of it. I will save that for when I am in Japan.
I had bought this unit back in the day it was around $450 new for me.
The impedance rise is huge
