"Keep your combat outside on your PhD, not in your head". This is my real struggle.
I am 18 months into my PhD (history) and have found myself paralysed by imposter syndrome in the last couple of weeks. The trigger is a journal article I'm desperately trying to complete. I didn't think I'd suffer from imposter syndrome, I'm a mature student with decades of management experience behind me, including writing reports! So, it's true, anyone can suffer from this - you're not alone! Your video has convinced me to talk with my supervisory team.
It can certainly hit everyone! I'm pleased that you found the trigger and taking steps to solve the issue - I'm always amazed how simple it is to resolve simply by reaching out to the right people! Good luck!
I am working to complete my PhD. Every time a write I think I have got it all wrong and compare myself to others who have completed. Its so hard
6:02 "They all have to do poos ... " *spits coffee on screen* LOL!! Classic!
I am a first year PhD student and I have been feeling lots of impostor syndrome. My supervisor, my friends, and these videos have helped me immensely (I am extremely lucky to not have a toxic supervisor). Thanks for the videos Andy!
Been following this channel for over a year. Starting my PhD in neuroscience in 3 weeks! Looking forward to implementing your hacks
Fantastic! Best of luck with the start of your PhD - the first year is important to get right! Check out my UA-cam video on what to do in your first year to get you off on the right track!
I'm in my 1st year of a chemistry PhD and still suck at mental maths! Thanks a lot for sharing your struggle, it helped me realise I'm not the only one as I've always been sooo self conscious about it.
For students with 'Impostor syndrome', just comfort yourself with the thought you don't have 'Dunning - Krueger syndrome' . Then you really would have something to worry about.
5:00 I'm always relieved when others are also struggling to understand a lecture or project like I'm not the only one!
10:52 man this is so true, we still do the work of showing up to the place.
I struggled so much to finish my master’s thesis because I felt like a fraud. I was really hard on myself. My husband needed to constantly remind me that I was a student and was in a learning environment. Not a retired expert.
Your journey has been helpful to me, thank you for sharing it. I have a presentation today and tomorrow, and I'm suffering from some performance anxiety. Im coming to your vids because at every stage in my phd your videos have been applicable and so helpful. I appreciate everything you're doing!
Thank you thank for this video ! I needed to hear this ! I have just completed my PhD and everyone around is so happy and proud , but the realisation has still not hit me and I am feeling all those emotions you have talked about this! I feel that I have got this by fluke 😞 I hope I can overcome this and actually celebrate my achievements!
So nice that I got to hear your thoughts... really true and being a phd student and faculty struggling on different fronts... very thought provoking
Needed this today, Just started my PhD this semester!
This video hits hard:I have an undergrad degree in English an I’m entering my second year of my MLitt/MFA. Stepping into th room with people who have been professional actors and directors and stage managers is hella intimidating. Trusting the process is so hard but worth it!!!
"You fall in a bell curve." A Tim Minchin fan, I see!
Great video - thanks Andy, very helpful
As a first year PhD student chemical engineering.... I learned alot and I might partially experienced this syndrome.... in the recent years .... thank you very much for sharing this information I am definitely going to be on the lookout for any syndrome symptoms and deal with them the better way this time
very helpful post. thank you keep up your great job
Super inspirational channel, mate. Giving me lots of thoughts for moving forward in Neuroscience when I commence my Masters next year and hopefully move onto a PhD.
Best of luck!
Really insightful!
6:04 😂😂😂 the way he said it tho
I am close to submitting my thesis. When comparing my thesis to other ones I feel like an imposter. Yet I had colleagues help me proofreading the thesis in exchange for me proofreading theirs. They said when they read my thesis they feel like an imposter. It's really a universal struggle haha
I’m in my final year of a five year PhD and just yesterday mid meeting with my supervisor I had a sense of imposter syndrome.
Thank you

I agree with everything in this video except one point. I don’t poo or pee. My body is 100% efficient and generates no waste.
I have a question. How do we get over procrastination, particularly at the last bit of the thesis completion that is the editing? Looking forward to a video on this. Thank you.
But... But I AM special! I AM!!!
Great work! I have a question have you ever meet someone doing a second PhD? Also, what is your opinion of doing a second PhD in case one doesn't get a post doc or a job?
Ooh you went to U Wales in Swansea? I did a special semester there, and while it had been short it was one of the best experience I've ever been in.
I had a great time at Swansea and I'm glad you did too!
Honestly, after 3 years of misery and writing, now at the finish line, I believe I do not deserve to have my PhD at all.
Literally story of my life 😂 🤭 Thank you, Sir.
My pleasure! Knowing your triggers and simple tools to tackle the feeling has been a massive help for me!
You are right. You should let the Oxford folks talk about these matters.
Used to think (naively!) that getting a PhD was about being 'smart'. But having been 'there', now I know better.
Hi Andy, I am a new PhD student in US. I really like your videos and have seen most of them. However, I am not confident if I would be able to make through the PhD in terms of writing papers, mainly because I have never written one. Also while reading other papers I feel lost. Is there an advice that you have? How easy or difficult it is to write a paper that gets published in top conferences?
Any advice would be helpful.
This is very normal in the beginning
When I first started my PhD, I was not able to understand the papers when I read them,
Now I published my first paper and I am working on the second
Keep in mind that,
Reading articles and writing papers are just skills that you gain during your PhD
Good luck
Yaar Hindi bolo nahi toh India wapas jao
Hey, I’m in the industry and feeling the same
VIDEO IDEA - 10 people to stay away from acadmia !! :D
would love to see it in motion!!
Also, my trigger is writing my thesis.
Thanks for this! How about this for timing? Searched "complete your phd" because of imposter syndrome and this video popped up and it's only 15 hours old.
😂 mental math is my weakness. I kind of feel, im not really smart unless i can do mental math.. and coming frim a phd MALE saying they cant do mental math is very reassuring 😅😂
I say male, becauae mostly males are better at math than females
It truly is an issue of mine...I think we are known as the calculator generation...
Unfortunately for us i guess 😅
Make tough stuff to simple.See you.
I guess one way to cope with imposter syndrome is to pretend that a PhD is hard..
