All those “paid” apps you install for free will refuse to update unless you manually set each app to “Free” again EVERY TIME there’s an update available. The way they are doing things is just really annoying. I switched to Mint and got the same performance but better hardware support and a UI that’s much easier to customize. I gave up on eOS for now.

Like you, I was shopping for my first distro. I've tried about eight of them now I think. I knew right out of the box that I probably would go with Linux Mint, which I did. One of the big glaring problems that I found with Elementary OS was that I had to turn something off in my BIOS in order to have the program even load properly to try it out. I went on the forums to look for an answer and was very displeased to find that there were other people that had this problem that were really not properly addressed by anyone. This for something I'm going to pay for? Also, why was it not in any of the installation documentation stating that you needed to do this in your bios even to try the USB live stick? I have not had that problem with any of these other distros, except for the fact that Pop OS would never download properly for me. If this is something that is targeted for new Linux users, then those types of things need to be explained right out of the box.

7:48 as a workaround, you can drag the windows by Win+LMB. This way you can open move it way up and show the "Apply" button.
The elementary OS people have written about the payment system and why it is like that and also about why there are so few configuration options.
For me the window buttons placement takes a couple of days to get used to. I also specifically decided not to install and play with Tweaks at least initially. After a week or so I didn't to change anything and I am still using the defaults. Well, except for the background :) I love the defaults but I also love to change them periodically.
What I'm saying is, if you really wanna try a new desktop or OS (not just Pantheon), give it a real chance. Force yourself to use it exclusively and without any modifications for a week and see if all those annoyances are as terrible as you first thought.

Elementary is quite an amazing distroi, I like using it. Pantheon is beautiful, usable and it manages this at a very small memory footprint, that's great.I also really like the appstore with it's pay-if/what-you-want model. I wish they'd get rid of the problems. You mentioned some, this is my take: It's unbelievable that eOS still doesn't ship with a full-featured browser. Web is fine for a quick look at a website, but really, most people need Firefox or some flavor of Chromium. - eOS tries tro be an out-of-the-box experience, but doesn't ship an office suite. I can't get my head around that. Plus, if you install LibreOffice from the appstore, the theme is all borked up. I had to download the DEBs from the LibreOffice website. / the decision to get rid of the minimize button and have all (elementary) apps open where you closed them is interesting, but in my opinion ultimately flawed. First, it only works with apps designed for elementary, second, I want a file manager to start in my home directory, not in the directory of a now unplugged USB drive, which prompts an error. / Pantheon looks great by default, but offers little to no customization. That's strange in the Linux world. - Summing up, I still ove eOS, but I really wish they'd work on these issues.

This is laudable, but does it make sense if you want to offer an out-of-the-box experience for users who don't want to fiddle much with their system? With Chromium and LibreOffice it would be pretty much full-featured, so is that a sacrifice you should make just to save a few hundred MB?

Its probably the most polished and most stable distro out there. I have been trying a lot of distros coming from Windows, and only eos felt to me like solid product which I could actualy pay for... but there have been few issues I couldnt figure out.
First off, I couldnt figure out file sharing. I just couldnt make it work so I would be able to access my files from android device.
And secondly, it wasnt so easy to make it support writing in japanese. I mean, I did found a way on reddit, but this is something that should be supported out of the box... and it actualy is, If you install this os in japanese, you can write in japanese however you want using Mozc, but if you install it in non japanese language, Mozc is not installed, so you have to find other ways to make it work, because iBus is useless. Its a minor issue for others, but big one for me. On the other hand, I dont see an issue with that price tag when you can easily opt out from it.

I have never tried Elementary OS. I keep saying that I am going to install it on hardware and give it a real try.
I have mostly used rpm distros for 4 years, and currently living in the developmental version of Fedora Gnome, so I have a lot of the latest version of things like mesa, systemd.

With the AppCenter, you aren't donating to developers; you are paying for the app. You aren't helping them out, you are paying for a product. It isn't designed to hide the fact that you can pay nothing, it is designed to to put money into the pockets of developers who have put their time and effort into creating something. The price you see is what is called the 'recommended price', but you can pay more or less than that if you'd like. And of course the elementary team themselves also need to be paid for their work. The team is tiny, and it is also a full-time job. They would prefer that you pay for the product, which is why the website presents the download option in the way that it does.

Developers who benefit from using certain toolkits or technologies don't have to send money to them in repayment. If you make a .NET app using Visual Studio and you make money on it, you don't have to send a percentage to Microsoft. @@79chrisuk the app store I'm talking about is his app store. It has a "pay what you want even free model" in the software store. in many interviews, he's talked about why they chose to do that. It's not anything crazy, it's just him thinking that such an easy way to support devs at "purchase" time, would be attractive to end users and devs. AFAIK Elementary is the only GUI based distro with such a feature in their app store, so in a way he's trying a model we haven't seen on the Linux side yet. My gut instinct says he's on to something. I could see this be a thing in Gnome and Plasma too.

that seems a very emotional decision. I've used elementary for some years now, and the pratical result of that tactic is that you end up choosing to pay more often; do notice choosing. There are a bunch of apps I've installed for free, and eventually ended up paying for out of choice (reminded choice one may say), elementary itself beeing one of those. Besides that it is a linux distro like any other, just more beautiful.

That stinks on ice, and it's one reason I won't even touch it.
I donate to my distro of choice a few times a year, but they've never tried to put a guilt trip on me to send money. The developer asks people to donate from time to time, and there is a link to do that, but all of the downloads are on a public FTP and you can get anything you want.
I send him the money because he let me try it no questions asked and it's a good product. If I wanted to use something where they wanted me to pay up front, I'd just use Windows.

      That deopends.
The eOS developers are the only ones who have done actual public usability testing as a mean to make design decisions. And if you watch their videos on usability, it is obvious they are very serious about usability. Meaning, they actually know something about it. I did actually ditch eOS back in time, because they went off the usability path and made a sort of "vista version" of eOS. Extremely slow and they took away good usability features. But it does look like they have bettered themselves and gotten back on the right track. The new version of eOS looks fantastic, and it seems they have reimplemented the usability features they removed back then. So I am thinking of going back to eOS. IF the new version is also speedy like Luna was.

@@moth5799 I do agree that using eOS is in comparison to use MacOS, so if you're used to windows, the standard distro is (I think) linux mint mate. My problem with that is, that they do not have the same strict strategy on consistency through programs as eOS has, and I like that all my programs look the same in design. But... I also think eOS has more in comparison with MacOS than that, because about both you can say either you love it or you hate it. That's just how it seems to be.
I will say though, that the *_speed_* of eOS Luna (which was my first eOS distro way back in time) completely sold me over linux mint. That's why I think if they can achieve that same speed, they will actually move some people from mint to eOS.

@@moth5799 Oh... the tiling windows has been a suggestion for eOS very early on. It was left for reasons I do not remember, I think it was because it would be lots of hard work as much of it would have to be done in the window manager, not in the CSS for example which would have been a lot easier. But notice, at that same time they also were playing with multiple gestures, and that has been implemented in the new version, now around 3 versions later. So maybe tiling will also come.
But I do agree, until then when tiling is a must, then eOS is probably not really the right choice.
It's not just the coding, btw, there are also usability decisions to be made when you shift from the eOS window strategy to a tiling one. And eOS development doesn't have a reputation of being exactly fast, hence their "we ship when we are ready" motto
